  • 14 Sep 1959: Sapper Killed on Bridge at Scout Camp
    A sapper in the C.M.F, William Derek Field (21), of Hawthorn Road, Caulfield, was fatally injured at Upper Beaconsfield, on Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a heavy weight on a pile-driver.
    The soldier was helping with construction work on a bridge over Cardinia Creek at a Boy Scouts camp when the accident occurred at 5 pm.
    A 16-cwt weight on the pile-driver struck him a glancing blow, causing injuries from which he died soon after admission to Heidelberg Military Hospital on Saturday night.5
