    Mr Thomas Walton died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs G. W. Robinson, of Narre Warren North, on Friday last, at the advanced age of 91 years. Mr. Walton was an early pioneer settler, arriving in Berwick in 1854, and shortly after purchasing from Capt. Gardiner the property "Holly Green," now the residence of Mr S. J. Webb. Mr. Walton was a fine old type of Englishman, being hale and hearty to the last. He was a leading agriculturist and stock breeder, and was instrumental in founding the Royal and Mornington Farmers' Societies. He was interred in the Berwick Cemetery (of which he was one of the original trustees) on Saturday, the Rev. A. J. Cole officiating at the grave side.5

    On Friday, 24th October, one of Victoria's earliest colonists, passed away, and also one of South Gippsland's pioneers, almost the first of the early Brandy Creek settlers - Mr. Thomas Walton, who died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. G. W. Robinson, "Hillsley," Narree Warren.
    Mr. Thomas Walton enjoyed splendid health almost up to the day of his death. Although in his 92nd year he could read without spectacles and every night by lamp light read the newspapers through and through.
    The cause of death was a fall received at the Flinders Street railway station on Sept. 23rd, the day he left Drouin for Melbourne. Going out of the station he fell down the steps at the Elizabeth Street exit, getting badly bruised. However, he went to the Flemington stock sale on Wednesday (next day) and attended the Show on the Thursday. He then paid a visit to his niece, Mrs A. H. Cox, at Brighton, where he had an attack of asthma. Mrs Cox got Dr. Aitcheson, of Brighton, to attend him and he told her that Mr Walton had injured his heart by the fall and might go off any moment. He apparently got alright and visited several old Brighton friends and renewed acquaintance with places he knew in the forties.
    On Sunday, October 19th, he accompanied his daughter, Mrs G. W. Robinson to Narree Warren, and was not too well for a day or two there, but on Thursday he was up and about the orchard and eat three good meals, and sat up until after 10 o'clock that night. On Friday morning he said he felt a lot better and asked for his clothes to get up, and an hour afterwards passed away quietly without pain or struggle. Mr Walton was a strenuous man in his early days, always following farming or stock raising. He spent some years farming at North Brighton, was the pioneer farmer of the Berwick district; was a noted breeder of the Clydesdale horse, taking valuable prizes as an exhibitor at the old Port Phillip Farmer's Show, Royal Park. He exhibited flax and tobacco at the Exhibition in 1856, on a site where the Law Courts are now. In 1868, Mr Walton took up "Riverbanks," on the Sand Road, Drouin West, and some members of the family selected "Hawsley," on the Main Gippsland road, Brandy Creek. Through the experiments with grass on the then dense scrub lands, he called attention to the great possibilities of the scrub lands. In 1880, together with the family he migrated to the West Darling district of New South Wales, taking up "Tillagoonah," then an arid piece of country. He started and bored for water, was successful, and receiving an offer for the station sold out and returned to "Riverbanks." In the disastrous years that followed the land boom Mr Walton lost most of his Gippsland property, and resided at "Grassdale," Drouin, up to his visit to town last month.
    As one of the first trustees of the Berwick cemetery, and also being one of the first in all the institutions around Berwick-Church, school and show grounds—Mr Walton thought he would like to be interred in that cemetery, so the members of the family agreed to have him buried there, the interment taking place on Saturday afternoon.
    - The late Mr Walton leaves a family of four daughters and two sons, and a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.6

  • 1972: I REMEMBER WHEN: THE SWEENEY FAMILY
    The history of the Sweeney Family seems to me, to be the same as that of any ordinary family, that has lived in the area for about a hundred and fifteen years, that is of success, failure, joy and sorrow.
    The Portrait on the next page shows the elder Sweeney men John and Daniel who came from 'Fermoy' County Cork, Ireland around 1857. Daniel first then two years later John arrived, Daniel spent his first years mining at Ballarat, and when John came he put a notice in the press of the day to say that he too was now in Australia.
    Daniel bought a horse, and rode back to Melbourne. The brothers then acquired a second horse, and decided to come to Gippsland looking for land on which to settle. As the area around Narre Warren and Berwick reminded them of their native birth place; they were able to purchase a farm, ever since called "Fermoy", from a Mr. Watson who was broken hearted at the death of his wife and baby, and was selling out to return to England. Their grave is still on "Fermoy", the land presently owned and farmed by Frank Sweeney.
    John Sweeney married a Miss Alice Reedy, whose family seems to be the fount of a great number of pioneers; including such families as the Kirkhams and the Reedy's of Dandenong, Hallam, Narre Warren, Hampton Park and Cranbourne.
    As the Sweeney children increased in size and numbers, the family increased the number of cows milked, and the area of land under cultivation, especially oat crops, at one stage they farmed as far south as Greaves Road on land now owned by Favero and Gazzola brothers.
    They made their own butter and cheese and took them by horse and cart to the little shops around Richmond and South Yarra. My Father (William) told me that they would leave on a Sunday hunting their pigs along the road for Tuesday's market at Dandenong, staying at friends along the way returning late Tuesday with the "Bullion".
    Grand Uncle Daniel who remained a bachelor was keen, (like most Irishmen are) on horses, and generally raced a very good pony. My Father related two incidents, one at Beaconsfield where Uncle Dan and some riders thought the decision given by the Judge quite unfair, and after dismounting, an all in fight broke out with the races subsequently being declared "No Race". The second in a happier vein I'm pleased to say, was when Uncle won the main race on the old Eumemmering race course which was where the Prince Mark Motel now stands beside the Eumemmering Creek at Doveton. On the way home, he decided to celebrate at Hallam (Hotel or Wine Salon I'm
    not sure) but prior to the commencement of the celebrations, they decided to hide the prize, a new saddle, in an old log fence, when stumps were drawn on the evenings festivities they had some difficulty, in locating their horses let alone the saddle, for which they had to return the next day.
    A remarkable sidelight of the family was that none of the girls married, the first girl to do so was from the fourth generation, over a hundred years after the family settled in Narre Warren.
    My Father told me the elder one's were educated in the beginning at Berwick State School and the later children at Narre Warren State School, then some of them went to Melbourne to finish their education. They walked from Fermoy Narre Warren to Berwick but more than that the Hanley children used to join them after walking from where the Corams now live up near Oakwood Riding School, on the corner of Pound Rd and Cranbourne Rd.
    As I sat at a Progress Association Meeting the other night and listened to how crowded the school buses are, I thought of how empty paddocks must have seemed to those little ones in the far off days.
    The Sweeney's were consistent worshippers at St. Michael's Church, Berwick, and I was a little boy there with my parents and brothers, on the day the key was forgotten, and Mr Bill Curran (The Prince of Stack Builders) opened the door of the old wooden Church with a number ten hob nail boot.
    There is now living on Civic Centre Estate, Narre Warren originally the old Stuart Estate, which was owned by the Sweeney's, two great great grandsons Jason and Seamus. Hill who are fifth generation descendants of John and Alice Sweeney.
    I have the original wooden box that Daniel brought all his worldly possessions to Australia in. I have never been able to find out whether he put it under his bunk of a night on the trip out, or whether he sat on it and pulled an oar. Whichever is immaterial, for I hope, that the present and future generations are as kind and industrious as their very successful forbears, who now God rest their souls are all buried save Edward in the Berwick Cemetery.

    Summary of "Mr Narre Warren" Pat Sweeney.
    Pat Sweeney is a quiet sort of a man. He says what he feels needs to be said, and when nothing needs to be said he says nothing. That sort of bloke seems a bit rare, somehow. Though l understand he can say plenty to a cow about two in the morning. You couldn't call him good looking, even if you were about to bite him for his last quid - but I reckon that if you needed his last quid bad enough he'd give it to you. That's the sort of bloke he is. There are a couple of other things about him that perhaps should be made public. One is that he's going to be in a terrible bad mood when he sees this, but that won't matter because everyone else will have seen it by then.
    Another thing is that last year we were going to nominate Pat and a bloke called Jack Nobelius ("the eyes and ears of the world") for a community service award last year, and they both threatened to resign! Pat has backed the Progress Association with a lot of time and effort, and a lot of money. The money has been needed - but no more so than the time and effort. I think that it would be fair tribute to say that when Pat gets up to have a say, we all listen. That's because he usually talks sense, and because Pat is, above all else, an HONEST man.8
