  • 1 May 1886: A GEMBROOK FARM. By Our Agricultural Reporter
Gembrook can be reached from either Beaconsfield, Pakenham or Nar Nar Goon. The latter is the nearest, counting the distance from the railway station, but as no public conveyance runs, the choice of route to the casual traveller is pretty well limited to Pakenham.
A coach leaves there on Mondays and Fridays, returning the same days. The distance from Pakenham is supposed to be 12 miles, but if the day is wet and the road slippery the travel ler is inclined to think they are "bush miles."
The track for the greater part of the way leads through very rough couutry, the soil of which is apparently of poor quality, consisting of decomposed granite, and the wonder is that such large trees as are found here could be grown on such indifferent soil. The land is also very scrubby and the greater portion of that which borders the road would never pay for clearing. As the higher altitudes are reached, however, and Gcmbrook is approached a marked difference is observed. The land abruptly changes from the whitish grit to a splendid red loam, the timber assumes gigantic proportions and the famous hazel scrub is found, though in many places its undivided right to the soil is disputed by a species of scrub which rejoices in the euphonious name of "prickly Moses." This red soil is capable of giving heavy yields of any kind of crop, but it is specially suited to the production of root crops.
Gembrook has a future before it, but its present great want is a railway. The question would this railway pay and be a good thing for the country is quietly passed over by those interested and prominence given to the undoubted fact that it would be a good thing for Gembrook. Two routes have been surveyed, one from the Beaconsfield railway station and the other from Pakenham. Either of these will be an expensive undertaking and will not open up much good country on the way. It is questionable if the most practicable as well as the best paying route has been surveyed. There are men who say that a better route than either mentioned is to be found, up the Toomuc valley where the engineering difficulties are not so great and a much greater extent of country would be accommodated. If the railway is continued on either of the routes already surveyed, that is along the tops of the spurs, only those living on the higher portions can get their produce to it, as those living in the valley would never think of carting their crops up the range, but if it is shown the valley route is practicable, those living a considerable distance up the ranges would have no difficulty in bringing their produce down, and the settlers in the valley could make use of the line, thus showing that a greater number would be benefited. Some fine farms are found in the district, though the land is principally dovoted to grazing.
Winander, the property of Mr. Edward Miller, is 960 acres in extent. This was formerly owned by Mr. Backhouse, and a good deal of clearing was done before it come into Mr. Miller's possession. The land originally was entirely covered with hazel scrub and 'prickly Moses,' which, of course, had to be cut down before any provision could be made for stock. A good burn is anxiously hoped for by the settler after he cuts the scrub and the first season Mr. Backhouse was not successful, the following year, however, he succeeded so well that not only the scrub but his house and outoffices were utterly consumed and he had to start building again. The risk of similar mishaps is always great in this rough country unless careful precautions are taken. The farm is now under the management of Mr. O'Sullivan. The greater portion of the soil is of the splendid red description already spoken of. About 600 acres have been cleared and sown down with English grasses. The stock at present comprises 1800 sheep, 65 head of cattle and 10 horses. The cutting of scrub is being proceeded with, and the area sown with grass added to each year.
The grass most in favor is cocksfoot, and all through the district this is highly spoken of. It is not so fattening as rye grass or so sweet as prairie, but it is hardier than either and does not require renewing. The great drawback to artificial pasture in many parts of the colony is the necessity for resowing every fourth or fifth year, but at Winander the oldest established pastures are the best, and they seem to thrive all the better for being eaten down closely. Another fact in connection with the grasses here is they thrive better and grow more thickly where the land has never been ploughed. This is owing to the soil being firmer, giving the roots a better hold, whereas where the soil has been ploughed it becomes so loose and friable that the grass is frequently pulled up by stock. The mixture now given to the Winandcr land is 30 lb. of cocksfoot and 1 lb. of red clover per acre, sown immediately after burning the scrub. No further trouble is taken, it not even being considered necessary to cover the seed in any way. Harrowing is, of course, out of the question on account of logs and stumps, but judging by the present appearance of the pasture it would be superfluous work at Winander. From two to three sheep per acre can be carried for a great part of the year, but in winter, owing to the humidity of the climate, they do not thrive so well. Sheep are very useful in keeping down the young scrub, which sometimes sprouts after burning, as they readily nip off the hazel shoots as they appear above ground. The greatest trouble is with the bracken, which grows quickly when the larger scrub is got rid of. The practice is to cut it every year with fern hooks, and by this means the growth is considerably weakened. The estimated cost is between 2s. and 3s. per acre for each cutting, and as this has to be continued every year it is somewhat of a tax, but the problem of how to get rid of them or keep them down in a cheaper manner has yet to be solved. The climate has a great deal to do with the success or failure of artificial grasses, as where they are subjected to droughts they invariably require renewing. At Gembrook the rainfall is between 40 and 50 inches, and this as well as the natural richness of the soil accounts for the results obtained. As has been said the soil is specially suited for the growing of root crops. In order to fit the land for the plough an expenditure of £5 or £6 per acre is necessary. This does not mean that all the timber is grubbed out ; such a proceeding would cost something like £25 per acre, therefore the large trees are left alone and only the smaller ones extracted. From a 2 acre patch last year 13 tons per acre of potatoes were dug. This seems a high yield, but a glance at thr deep, rich, red soil will convince the beholder that it is quite capable of giving this return. Many of the Swedish turnips now growing are 9 inches in diameter, and look more like pumpkins than the roots usually seen. Ten acres of oats were sown, 4 acres of which were cut for hay, giving a return of 3 tons per acre ; the remaining portion was reaped and yielded 60 bushels of grain per acre. Carrots do splendidly and some very fine specimens are now to be seen. Four acres of peas last season gave a return of 40 bushels per acre. Lucerne was tried, but, strange to say, without success ; about half an acre was sown, but it has died out. This is remarkable, as the rich soil and moist climate should suit it exactly. The fault may probably be found in the deficiency of lime. The lover of sport can find plenty to amuse him here. Excellent fishing can be had on the Wallace Creek, a very nice stream which runs through the proporty and contains numbers of blackfish. Wallaby and hares are so numerous as to be a pest. Numbers of English pheasants have escaped from the Acclimatisation Society's ground close by and frequently come about the house in winter to pick up grain and other food. Lyre birds too are numorons and make the woods ring in the mornings with their immitations of the notes of other feathered songsters.
Half a acre of orchard surrounds the house, and from it good yields of apples, pears and plums have been obtained. A couple of Himalayan blackberry bushes are conspicuous. This is a splendid fruit, much larger and better flavored than its English namesake, and three crops each year can be gathered from it. Though a number of shoots come up from the roots, it does not spread like the other blackberry, which in places becomes troublesome.15
  • 19 Nov 1886: THE ACCLIMATISATION OF ENGLISH BROWN TROUT. DISTRIBUTION OF FISH IN VARIOUS STREAMS.
The director and assistant director of the Zoological and Acclimatisation Society have been very busy lately in distributing and stocking various rivers and creeks on the Upper Yarra and Gipps Land districts and creeks in the Dandenong Ranges with fish.
Altogether over 15,000 young fry have been turned out; 3,000 of these were purchased as ova from the Salmon Commissioners of Tasmania, and hatched in the hatching boxes at the Zoological gardens, 2,000 of them belonged to the society, and 1,000 were purchased and hatched for the Gipps Land Fish Acclimatisation Society. In addition to these, Mr Archibald Fisken, as agent for Sir Samuel Wilson, presented the Zoological Society with nearly 13,000 fry, which were hatched at Ercildoune. Mr. Le Souef, accompanied by Mr. Fisken left town on the morning of Friday, the 8th October last by the first train, and reached Ercildoune at noon, being met there by the manager, Mr M'Cook. The bath house was at once visited; it is placed close to a pure running stream, which comes out of the hills at the back of the homestead.
The young fish were found to be in splendid condition, all the six boxes being alive with them. Each box is about 5ft long by 18in broad and 4in deep, and a layer of fine gravel is placed on the bottom. The water is conducted from the creek into the house, and runs through all the boxes, which are at various levels. The man in charge (Phillip, an old servant of Sir Samuel Wilson is quite an enthusiast in his way, and takes great interest in the success of the work of hatching the ova for which he obtained from the fish by stripping. Mr. Le Souef had taken up a number of fish tins, and 3,200 fry were carefully counted out and placed in those, about 600 in each tin. Melbourne was reached by the last tram the same night, and at North Melbourne the society's conveyance was waiting, and the fish were at once conveyed to the Zoological gardens. Here they were left till daylight next morning, when Mr Le Souef took them and 1,000 of the fish which had been hatched at the gardens to the Princes Bridge station, where Mr. A Hervey, of Sale, the hon. secretary of the Gippsland Fish Acclimatisation Society, and Mr. W. Crooke, surgeon, of Fitzroy, who has property on the Upper Yarra, were waiting to receive them. Mr Hervey took charge of 3,200 and Mr. Crooke of 1,000, and both gentlemen left for their respective destinations by the early trams, and succeeded in placing their charges in the rivers and creeks for which they were intended without the loss of a fish. A few days after Mr D Le Souef took 1,000 fish to Lilydale, where he met Mr Shaw, the manager of the Coranderrk Aboriginal reserve, who had come down for the purpose, and that gentleman at once started with the fish and placed 100 in the Badger Creek, which runs through the reserve, and 400 in the Graceburn, an other nice trout stream, which joins the Watts near Healesville. A day or two after this, the assistant director took 230 trout fry and placed them in the Mount Emu Creek, near Camperdown. On Friday, October 22, the director and assistant director again visited Ercildoune by the first train, and returned to the Zoological gardens about midnight of the same day, with 1,200 fry. Mr Le Souef left with these early next morning, and took them down to Sale himself, distributing them on his way to gentlemen who took an interest in the work, and with whom he had made previous arrangements.
The first tin of 500 fry was delivered to Mr A. Backhouse, at Pakenham, who at once conveyed them to Gembrook, and placed them in the Cockatoo, a fine clear stream running into the Yarra, and which flows through the Zoological Society's reserve at Gembrook, and is well adapted for trout. Tins of fry were also left at Traralgon, Morwell, and Rosedale. On reaching Sale Mr Le Souef handed over the remaining tins to Mr Hervey, who placed their contents in the Avon River. On Saturday, November 6, Mr D Le Souef went to Ercildoune, and returned on the following Monday with over 3,000 fish. Next morning Mr Le Souef, sen., took these to Prince's bridge Station. He there delivered 1,400 to Mr Crooke, for the Don and other creeks on the Upper Yarra. One thousand were also handed over to Mr W W. Gaggin, for stocking the Monbulk, Jerusalem, and Menzie's creeks in the Dandenong Ranges. The rest he took down the Gippsland line. At Pakenham he delivered 800 to Mr. Edward Miller, who had a buggy waiting to receive them, and who conveyed them to the William Wallace Creek, at Upper Gembrook, where Mr Miller has property. The Wallace is a splendid trout stream, and lower down is known as the Cannibal Creek. Mr Le Souef left the tram at Bunyip, and with the assistance of Mr. Skinner, of that township, placed 800 fry in a suitable place in the Bunyip River. The following is a list of the streams which have been stocked this season and the number of fry placed in each.

Mr. Le Souef is much indebted to Mr. A. McCook, the manager of Ercildoune, Mr. Hervey, Mr. Crooke, and the other gentlemen who assisted in the work. As only 300 fry were originally placed in the Watts River by Mr Le Souef, and that stream has been fished for trout for many years past, it is hoped that with the streams named the stocking will be equally successful ; if so, good work will have been done by the society this year. In a few days the assistant director will proceed to Dimboola with a large number of different varieties of carp for the Wimmera.
The following is a copy of a letter received by Mr Le Souef from Mr. Crooke with reference to the trust placed in the Upper Yarra and tributaries. The first lot spoken of were turned out two years ago.
    1 Royal terrace, Fitzroy,
    Nov 13 1886
My dear Sir,—I have much pleasure to inform you that the several consignments of English trout you so kindly entrusted to my care have been safely placed in the Upper Yarra and its tributaries under conditions most favourable to their successful acclimatisation. The first lot was set free in a well protected offshoot of the Yarra, opposite Launching place P.O. That these have thriven and emigrated from their home to the main stream is proved by seeing them rise to flies on calm evenings.
Our large consignments of this season, amounting to near 3,000 young fry, I have distributed to the Don River, the Brittania creek, and secluded rivulets flowing round islands in the Upper Yarra. A portion of the latter I have placed in a large fish pond on my property. This pond is fed by a clear mountain stream, and will permit safe propagation in the future and will enable me to set free fresh supplies annually until the whole extent of the upper Yarra is thoroughly stocked.
In common with all my neighbours I have to tender you our best thanks for adding the very great boon of successful English trout acclimatisation to the many attractions of our beautiful district—I am, &c., W CROOKE.16

  • 27 Sep 1932: DEATH OF SIR E. MILLER. NOTED PHILANTHROPIST, Banking and Pastoral Director.
Sir Edward Miller, one of Melbourne's oldest and most prominent business men, who had been for many years closely associated with pastoral and mining interests in Australia, died at his home, "Glyn," Kooyong-road, Toorak, at 1 p.m. yesterday, at the age of 84 years. He had been ill for about three weeks.
An active business career of over half a century brought Sir Edward Miller into many movements for the development of Australian resources, while other interests made him a well-known and much-esteemed figure in charitable and sporting circles of Melbourne. For twenty years he sat in the Legislative Council of Victoria, first as representative of South Yarra in 1892, and afterwards as representative of the East Yarra Province.
His father, who died in 1888, was one of the early pioneers, and so amazingly successful in his ventures that he became widely known to the public as "Money" Miller. He, too, sat for some time in the Legislative Council. Sir Edward Miller's grandfather was Captain Henry Miller, a veteran of the Peninsular War and the Battle of Waterloo, who arrived at Moreton Bay, Queensland, in 1824, and was appointed first commandant, there.
Born at Richmond on 3rd August, 1848, Sir Edward Miller was educated privately and at the Melbourne Church of England Grammar School. During most of his business career he was associated with banking, pastoral and mining pursuits.
The first scrip of the Broken Hill Pty. Co. was issued in his name. He was part owner of Rocklands Station, Camooweal, Queensland, and chairman of the Victorian Gold-Mining Association, Charters Towers. The fuller venture is said to have realised over £500,000 worth of gold, with a share-calling power of less than £5000.
Other prosperous concerns with which Sir Edward Miller was associated suggested the descent from father to son of that legendary quality ascribed to Midas in turning everything to gold. For many years Sir Edward Miller was also chairman of the Bank of Victoria and of the Victoria Insurance Company. An active interest in racing, and his association with the celebrated Redleap stables, induced him to become Master of the Findon Hunt for twenty years. In war time he did valuable work as treasurer of the Australian branch of the Red Cross Society, for which he was knighted in 1917. Besides his long association with the Red Cross, Sir Edward Miller was for some time honorary treasurer of the Talbot Colony for Epileptics, was on the committee of the Eye and Ear Hospital, the Blind Institute, and a member of the finance committee of the Children's Hospital, In 1918 Lady Miller was decorated with the O.B.E. in recognition of her patriotic work. Advancing age did not diminish Sir Edward Miller's zest for active interests, and he found much congenial occupation on his farm at Bacchus Marsh.
Lady Miller and two sons, one of whom served with the Grenadier Guards in France during the war, survive him.19

  • 8 Dec 1878: Her sister: DIVORCE COURT. In the Divorce Court last week the suit Maud Alice Moseley v. Harold Cooper Moseley came on for trial before the Chief Justice. The petitioner sought a dissolution of her marriage with the respondent on the grounds of his cruelty and adultery. Mr Skerrett said he was acting for the respondent in this matter, but lie did not intend to take any part in the proceedings in Court. The object of the respondent in defending the suit had been to retain the custody of the two children of the marriage, which had been and were now in his custody. He had been informed, however, that the petitioner did not intend to ask for the custody of The children. Therefore the suit might be regarded as practically an undefended one. Mr Wilford, who appeared for the petitioner, said the statement made by his friend was correct. The petitioner was not able to keep the children, as she was at service, and earning only a small wage. Mr Moseley giving evidence, said she was married to the respondent in Wellington on the 29th March, 1892. After the marriage they lived in Wellington, and then at Featherston. The eldest of the two boys was about six years of age. oin had been away from her husbxnd sin to the 22nd February, 1897. He had been guilty of cruelty towards her on many occasions. The woman he lived with used to be a lodger in their house. Witness had gone to the house pretty often to see the children. The woman took care of witness’ baby.
A sitting of the Divorce Court was held on Friday before the Chief Justice.
The hearing of the suit, Maud Alice Moseley v. Harold Cooper Moseley, was concluded. Mr Wilford appeared for the petitioner. Leonard Cloke, a bootmaker, deposed to watching a house at Newtown in which the respondent lived with a woman. The witness, who said he watched in company with a man named Bassett, detailed what he had seen on several occasions in November and December, 1897. His Honor said he was satisfied that adultery had been committed. A decree nisi for dissolution of marriage, to be moved absolute at the first sitting after three months, was granted, and by agreement an order was made that the husband have the custody of the children, and pay £20 as his wife’s cost of the petition.13

  • 28 Jun 1924: MERRYLEES-O'HARA. A wedding of more than usual interest was celebrated on Thursday, June 26, in the Queen's College chapel, the University, when Mr. William Andrew Merrylees (Rhodes scholar for 1920 and a distinguished University man of Queen's College, Melbourne, and Oriel College, Oxford), eldest son of Mr. and Mr. William Merrylees, of Charlton, Victoria, was married to Miss Annie O'Hara, only daughter of the late Mr. P. K. O'Hara and of Mrs. O'Hara, of Richmond Plains, Victoria. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. E. H. Bugden (Master of Queen's), and the bride, who was given away by Mr. J. Duncan, looked charming in her bridal robe of white cashmere de sole, draped over an underdress of silver lace, and clasped on one hip with a diamente ornament. The graceful sleeves of the lace fell away from the shoulders, and were weighted with crystal tassels, while the beautifully embroidered veil was confined to the head by clusters of blossom, and a tiny wreath of orange buds. A pretty picture was completed by a bouquet of Cecil Brunner roses, tied with ribbon streamers. The three bridesmaids were Miss Belle Merrylees, Miss Mary Atkinson, and Miss Nancy O'Hara. The two chief bridesmaids wore frocks of eau de nil and carnation pink blistered satin, draped to the side, and clasped with brilliant buckles; while their black panne velvet hats were trimmed with numidi plumage.
Miss Nancy O'Hara's frock of shot blue taffetas was worn with a silver tissue hat, ornamented with posies of flowers. Each maid carried an Early Victorian bouquet.
The best man was Mr. J. Merrylees, and the groomsman was Mr. T. Merrylees. After the ceremony, wedding tea was served at the Mia Mia tearooms. To travel in, the bride wore a coat-frock of navy-blue twill, braided in black with an Oriental buckle. Her black velvet hat was finished with oeprettes, and relieved by a brilliant ornament. Happy Creek / by John Bernard O’Hara
The little creek goes winding / through gums of white and blue, / a silver arm / around the farm / it flings, a lover true; / and softly, where the rushes lean, / it sings (o sweet and low) / a lover’s song, and winds along, how happy – lovers know!
The little creek goes singing / by maidenhair and moss, / along its banks / in rosy ranks / the wild flowers wave and toss; / and ever, where the ferns dip down, / it sings (o sweet and low) / a lover’s song, / and winds along, / how happy – lover’s know!
The little creek takes colour / from summer skies above; / now blue, now gold, / its waters fold / the clouds in closest love; / but loudly when the thunders roll / it sings (nor sweet nor low) / no lover’s song, but sweeps along, / how angry – lover’s know!
The little creek for ever / goes winding, winding down, / away, away, / by night, by day, / where dark the ranges frown; / but ever as it glides it sings, / it sings (o sweet and low) / a lover’s song / and winds along, / how happy – lover’s know!

John Bernard O’Hara, poet, schoolteacher, principal, wrote this poem about our Cockatoo Creek. / The poem achieved notoriety by being published in the Victorian Primary Schools Sixth Grade / Reader. Many a tourist and local remembered being entertained by John’s singing and recitals. / John’s mother Nellie Louise O’Hara owned this property originally named / “Barkness” from 1907 until 1916 and later renamed Desmond. It is hard to imagine / our little creek having had crystal clear water, with manna gums lining the / creek and during the holiday season (1920s to 1940s) tents camped along the / edge of the creek. / 2001.2

Historical information

"Desmond", on the Cockatoo Creek, on land which now forms part of Alma Treloar Reserve, was the home of the O'Hara family ca. 1910. The poet John Bernard O'Hara, used to visit his mother there, and remembered many wonderful holidays with the "city folk" who travelled to Cockatoo on "Puffing Billy" and camped along the creek. The family in the foreground is most likely the O'Hara family.
Significance
The photograph is significant because it shows a Cockatoo home of around 1910.

Australian Dictionary of Biography

John Bernard O'Hara (1862-1927), schoolmaster and poet, was born on 29 October 1862 at Sandhurst (Bendigo), Victoria, son of Irish parents Patrick Kelly O'Hara, teacher, and his wife Mary Ann, née Connelly. O'Hara's school years were troubled by his father's two insolvencies and the loss of the family home. He unsuccessfully attempted matriculation at 15 from George Street State School, Fitzroy, succeeded a week before his sixteenth birthday and then belatedly attended Carlton College, possibly earning his fees by coaching. Here his unusual combination of talents unfolded: when he enrolled at the University of Melbourne in 1881 he had won two prizes for poetry and demonstrated marked mathematical ability. He won the mathematical and Stawell exhibitions in his first year but the need to augment the family income, despite a scholarship to Ormond College, affected his work and he graduated in 1886 with third-class honours. He took his M.A. two years later.
O'Hara taught briefly with the Christian Brothers before being offered a lectureship in mathematics and natural philosophy at Ormond. His association with the college admitted him into the ranks of Melbourne's cultural and academic establishment, to which few Irish Catholics had access, but it did not bring enough money and O'Hara built up a private coaching business and published examination guides. In 1889 he accepted the offer of a partnership from Thomas Palmer, the owner and principal of South Melbourne College and in 1894 he became sole proprietor.
Under O'Hara's leadership the college was co-educational, its curriculum academic and its ethos competitive. Its students prided themselves on being an educational elite. Girls and boys were encouraged in similar ambitions and competed on equal terms. The senior classes were taught by specialists and all students came under O'Hara's personal care and influence. Though traditional in his methods, he was an outstanding teacher. Affectionately nicknamed 'Teddy', the short, stout and lively O'Hara inspired his students and tempered his discipline with humour. Katharine Susannah Prichard remembered how he recorded her unsuccessful bouts with arithmetic: 'Miss Prichard—a duck'. She also remembered the pains he took to coach promising students individually outside class hours. The college's record in matriculation examinations was remarkable and its students won numerous scholarships and exhibitions. By 1917, when ill health forced O'Hara to close it, hundreds of its pupils were occupying important positions in the professions, universities and politics.
Meanwhile, O'Hara had developed his literary gifts. In 1891 he published his first book of poetry, Songs of the South. Eight volumes followed to 1925 including The Poems of John Bernard O'Hara (1918). He was joint vice-president of the Australian Literature Society in 1904-11. Critics praised his perfect metrical ear, his melody and his mastery of form, but noted a lack of depth and a tendency to concentrate on manner rather than matter. While the Bulletin writers sought to develop a native idiom, O'Hara remained attached to the English romantics and expressed his new-world experience through a derivative medium which was ultimately inimical to it. His best known poem, 'Happy Creek', was set to music and became familiar to two generations of Victorian schoolchildren.
An outstanding district cricketer in his youth, O'Hara listed tennis, billiards, cycling and sea travel as recreations. He had little opportunity to indulge them in his retirement which was overshadowed by kidney disease which ended his life on 31 March 1927. He was buried in Brighton cemetery. His wife, Agnes Elizabeth, née Law, an ex-student whom he had married at Collingwood on 3 December 1910, and their four children survived him.15

Newspaper-Articles

  • 24 Nov 1894: I don't know how the scandal originated, but it spread like wild-fire through Albert park. Dr. O'Hara, said the gossips, was in the habit of joining a number of ladies in an early morning swim in the ladies' baths at Albert-park. But those who knew the doctor as a gentleman and a man of honour ridiculed the idea. Besides, how could he disguise that magnificent moustache, and the leonine, locks, and tenor voice to pass for peachdown, silken tresses, and soprano? Absurd! A man for whom Collins-street was not large enough, so to speak, mistaken for a woman ! Ridiculous! However, they made bets about it, and they watched the baths next morning—making weak pretence of lolling indolently on the sands. Sure enough, amongst the first batch of bathers, attired in a fashionable bathing gown, was the handsome presence of Dr. O'Hara—Dr. Elizabeth O'Hara.15
  • 3 Oct 1895: During the past few days Greendale has been honored with the presence of a distinguished visitor —Dr Elizabeth O'Hara a well known lady physician of Melbourne. Dr O'Hara has been the guest of her old and esteemed friend Mrs Denis Ryan, to whom she has been promising to pay a visit for the past couple of years, but has hitherto been prevented by the exacting nature of her professional duties. Dr. O'Hara has also a sister, Dr. Annie O'Hara who is enjoying a large and lucrative practice in the metropolis. Annie Genevieve O'Hara16
  • 8 May 1897: Melbourne Gossip. By Viva. 1 May. One of the little band of Victoria's women doctors has passed away. On the 26th April Dr. Annie O'Hara, who was one of the pioneers amongst the medical women at our University died in Melbourne. Dr. Elizabeth O'Hara, another of the band of women doctors, is a sister of the dead lady, and she was sister also to Mr. J. B. O'Hara, known as a teacher and a writer of musical verse. The father of the family has literary talent, and has written both verse and prose. He interested himself in the movement to open the medical classes at our University to women, and encouraged his daughters to enter them. It is curious to note that Dr. Garrett-Anderson, who, to quote Charles Reade, "as an enthusiastic student of medicine, knocked in vain for admission at the doors of all the British Universities 30 years ago," has just been elected president of the East Anglian branch of the British Medical Association. Annie Genevieve O'Hara17
  • 21 May 1898: OUR LADIES' COLUMN. (By DAISY.)
TUE pioneer lady doctors in Victoria have had many difficulties to contend with. All, therefore, who are interested in their success, will be pleased to hear that Dr. Elizabeth O'Hara, of Albert Park, has received an appointment as physician to the Port Melbourne Branch of Australian Natives Association. Miss O'Hara was one of the first six ladies to take a degree at the Melbourne University, and is also the first lady doctor in Victoria on the medical roll of the A.N.A. Dr. Elizabeth O'Hara's photograph appears in this week's issue of Punch.18
  • 22 Sep 1934: WEDDINGS. Johnson-O’Hara
A marriage of interest to the numerous friends he has in the Shepparton district was performed at South Melbourne Presbyterian Church early this month of William Y. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Johnson, of Grahamvale, to Jean O’Hara, niece of Dr. Elizabeth O’Hara, of Beaconsfield Parade, Albert Park.
Both were members of the teaching staff of the Education Department, and had graduated with final honrs at the Melbourne University, while Mr. Johnson will be remembered as a former student of the Shepparton High School. For the past eight months he has been on the staff of the Rushworth Higher Elementary School. Jean Elizabeth O'Hara19

A very well-known resident of Beaconsfield Parade, Albert Park, Dr. Elizabeth O'Hara, passed away at her home on Saturday, November 14, at the age of 75 years. Dr. O'Hara was a pioneer woman medical student and practised her profession for some time in Northcote and Middle Park.
