  • 30 Aug 1893: The contest between Messrs Rogers, Gower and Turnbull for the Beaconsfield riding, resulted in the latter being elected by a majority of 33 votes. Mr Turnbull's return greatly pleases the Gembrook people, who have been without a resident representative for some time. We are informed that he has purchased a quantity of land previously in the occupation of Mr Crichton, and therefore has a large stake in the district.

  • 8 May 1895: Local Intelligence.
    At Saturday's meeting of the Berwick Council the resignation of Cr. Turnbull, late member for Beaconsfield riding, was received with regret, Cr. Brisbane firing off a panegyric in commemoration of his colleague's usefulness whilst in the council and Cr. Goff had also a good word to say of his late confrere. The date of the extraordinary election was fixed for May 25; and Cr. Goff will perform the duties of returning officer. Ex-Cr. Sykes will contest the seat against all comers, and comes forward at the request of a large number of ratepayers, many of whom hail from the Gembrook divsion of the riding. In the light of recent events it is plainly to be seen that there will probably be dissentions as to manegement of this portion of th shire, and wise heads are necessary to deal with the impending trouble. Mr. Sykes has a pratical knowledge of council matters, and as a local resident his candidature should commend itself to the ratepayers. William Henry Goff, Jessey Sykes24
  • 21 Sep 1915: RECRUITING AT GEMBROOK
    Quite 95 per cent. of those fit are gone from Gembrook or are going to the front. We feel very proud of the young men in this district. Mr. John Turnbull, of Gembrook, has three sons out of four at the front. His manager last week went into camp, and his billit will be open here on his return. According to the Argus' lists, Mr. Turnbull has given about £3,000,0 distributed among the different war funds. His daughter, Miss Turnbull, has given £500, and her brother, Mr. R. Turnbull, £500. At last Ferntree Gully shire council meeting a vote of thanks was passed to be sent to Messrs and Miss Turnbull. Nearly all the people in the Gembrook district have subscribed liberally to the numerous calls. - Dandenong " Journal."25
  • 15 Mar 1916: The death of Mr John Turnbull, a native of North Berwick, Scotland, took place at his Town residence on the 9th instant. He had been in failing health for a year or two. He left a fine property in Gembrook, also one in Queensland. He was at one time a Berwick shire councillor. He has three sons out of four gone to the war. According to the "Argus" war funds list he gave £5,000, in various sums of £500 to war and relief purposes. The people of Gembrook look upon his death as a heavy loss to this district and to the Empire. He was a true sportsman, and bred a few good horses in Gembrook. He had several winners. He won the V.R.C. St Ledger and other races with Finland, which he raced for one year and sold.26
  • 20 Apr 1916: Probate is being sought on the will of the late Mr John Turnbull, of "Narambla," Irvine Road, Toorak, and "Hazeldeane," Gembrook, gentleman, who died on March 9. The will was dated December 6, 1907, and testator bequeaths real and personal estate valued at £34,668 and £95,608 respectfully to his widow and children.27

  • 11 Jun 1874: THE NEW LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY.
    In the last number of the Leader of Melbourne, the subscribers of that newspaper were presented with a large supplementary sheet containing portraits of the 78 members of the new Assembly of Victoria, comprising seven cabinet ministers, fifteen ex-ministers, forty-two members who had previously sat in Parliament at various times, and fourteen representatives new to fame. Judging from the faces of those personally known to us the likenesses may possibly be a little flattering, but are unmistakeable.
    THOMAS, DAVID, chemist, native of Llandeilo-Fawr, Caermarthanshire, has been returned several times for Sandridge. He sits in the Opposition corner.19

  • 14 Jul 1876: DEATH OF MR. D. THOMAS, M.L.A.
    IT is with the deepest regret that we have to chronicle the death of Mr. David Thomas, after a long and lingering illness, which took place at his residence, Bay-street, Sandridge, on Monday evening at half-past nine o'clock. His demise was long expected, as his medical advisers, Drs. Plummer and Robertson, gave no hopes of his recovery some time before his death. He was confined to his bed about ten weeks during his last illness, and during last session his then delicate health precluded him from attending to his parliamentary duties as he otherwise wished to do.
    He suffered from a complication of diseases, but principally enlargement of the liver which eventually turned to dropsy, to which he finally succumbed. Mr. Thomas was born in Llandilo, South Wales, and arrived in this colony in 1853, since which time has been in business in the borough as chemist. He was a member of the first municipal council—one year serving as Mayor—and continued to hold office until a few years ago, when his Parliamentary duties occupied so much of his attention.
    He was elected to represent Sandridge in Parliament in 1868 and has successfully contested the several elections since, having for his antagonists Messrs. David Moore and the late Mr. W. H. Gresham and others, all of whom be defeated by large majorities. Mr. Thomas always took a warm and active interest in the welfare of Sandridge, both as a public man and a citizen. From his gentlemanly and unassuming disposition he was highly esteemed and respected by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and two children to mourn his loss. Mr. George Thomas, draper, Emerald Hill, is a brother of the deceased gentleman and was most unremitting in his attention to his departed relative. In the Legislative Assembly, on Tuesday, Sir James McCulloch regretted that it was his painful duty to intimate to the House the death of one of its members, the late representative for Sandridge. Mr Thomas was a gentleman who had not taken any prominent part in the debates of the House, but he was sure all hon. members would agree with him in saying that there had not been among them a more honest, straightforward, and independent-minded man than the late member for Sandridge. (Hear, hear.) He would move that, as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased gentleman, the House adjourn until next day at four o'chck. The Hon. Mr. Berry seconded the motion, and expressed his thorough concurrence in the remarks of the hon. member concerning the character of the deceased gentleman. The funeral of Mr. Thomas took place from his late residence on Thursday, shortly after one o'clock p.m. The cortege was about the largest that has ever left the borough. Messrs. Whiteman, Bent, and other M.L.A's, together with the members of the Sandridge Council and officers and a large number of private friends followed the remains to their last resting place, the Melbourne General Cemetery. Mr. Thomas was a member of the local lodge of the G.U.I.O.O.F. and many of the brethren showed their esteem towards their departed brother by being at his funeral. At the cemetery six members of the Borough Council acted as pall-bearers, and the Rev. R. B. Dickinson, M.A., of St. Luke's Church, Emerald Hill, read the impressive burial service of the Episcopalian church at the grave. The plate on the coffin bore the following inscription, "In memory of David Thomas, who died July 10th, 1876, aged 49 years." The whole of the funeral arrangements were conducted in a most satisfactory manner by Mr. Gabell, of Sandridge, and in accordance with a wish of Mr. Thomas before his death, his funeral was carried out in the plainest and private manner possible, that no hat-bands or gloves to worn.21

  • 7 Jun 1922: The funeral of the late Professor John Simeon Elkington, who died at his home, "Austen," Canterbury road, Can terbury, yesterday morning, took place this afternoon. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Melbourne General Cemetery. The late professor was born at Pye, Sussex, England, in 1841, and arrived in Victoria when a boy six years of age. In 1912 he resigned the professorship of History and Political Economy at the University of Melbourne. He was a widower, and leaves a family of two grown-up sons. The University Council was represented at the graveside. The funeral arrangements were In the hands of A. A. Sleight Pty. Ltd.10
  • 10 Jun 1922: The death is announced of Professor John S. Elkington, who was a member of the staff of the Melbourne Unitersity for 36 years. Professor Elkington came to Australia with his parents in 1848.
    He attended the Melbourne Grammar School, and graduated in arts and law at the Melbourne University in 1866. In the following year he was appointed inspector of schools. In 1877 be was appointed lecturer in history and political economy at the Melbourne University, and three years later took the professor's chair in these subjects. He held the professorship until in 1913 he retired at the age of 72 years.
    Professor Elkington, who was twice married, leaves two sons—Dr. John Elkington, of the Commonwealth Department of Public Health, stationed at Brisbane, and Mr. Godfrey Elkington, who is in New South Wales.11
