Newspaper-Articles

  • 19 Apr 1907: TO THE EDITOR OF THE AGE. Sir,—We can and have grown and manufactured in this State tobaccoes in sufficient quantities to put this matter beyond any question of doubt. I have bought and sold tons of Victorian grown and manufactured tobaccoes for which I paid 1/4 per lb. These tobaccoes were sold to and used by smokers of every degree. There was no excise duty collected at this time, and our tobacco was driving out the imported, so that the customs were losing the revenue. The excise was then put on suddenly and wiped out the industry at one stroke. Since this time our Governments have been spending the tobacco revenue trying to revive the tobacco industry. Your article to day is clear on the subject. You say that in 1880-81 we produced 866 tons 13 cwt., which sold at 1/ per lb. Since then the production has dwindled down to nothing.—Yours, &c., J. McBRIDE.

EMERALD, Tuesday.-Mrs. McBryde, who has just purchased the premises and land formerly owned by Mr. G. Simmons, adjoining Cockatoo Creek station, and comprising post-office, store, and boardinghouse, was drawing water from a deep well by means of a windlass, when she slipped and fell a distance of 32ft. into 10ft. of water. For 20 minutes she remained immersed, holding to the windlass rope, before her cries attracted attention, and she was rescued. I had no time to bid my loved ones farewell.
Tis nothing strange, death cometh to us all.
My lot to-day; to morrow yours may fall.
I was not there at the hour of death

  • 2 Feb 1924: MYSTERY OF THE DANDENONGS
    The Story of the Lists
    FAMILY WITH A TRAGIC HISTORY
To the student of human nature it must be apparent that the subject of engrossing interest in the terrible tragedy of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens is not the strategy by which Norman List stalked and shot his victims, but the mental history of the man and of his family.
It has been stated that List was involved a few years, ago in a shooting episode at Cockatoo, a township in the Dandenong Ranges, which, viewed in the light of this Gardens tragedy, takes a sinister aspect.
The story was that List, while out rabbit shooting with a companion named Hugh Bell, accidentally shot him while going through a fence.
The facts of the case as ascertained locally are of greater significance. It was not Norman List who figured in this incident, but his younger brother, Wilfred.
WILFRED, at the time of this occurrence, in Sept., 1915, was 18 years old. He was like his brother, Norman, then 22, of a wild and romantic disposition. His favourite game was playing at Indians among the tree ferns, and he habitually carried a dagger, with the apparent desire of impressing his comrades with his prowess. The family were divided by a quarrel which had occurred in 1912 between the father and mother. The father, it is said, had bought a block of 80 acres at Cockatoo in order to remove bis growing sons from the temptations of the city, and when the series of family quarrels culminated in a breach the mother removed to Cockatoo and lived with her children, while List remained in town paying them occasional week-end visits.
    Remarkable Happening
The mother, who is now dead, was reputed to be eccentric. The altercations of her two sons may be traceable to her.
The episode of the death of Bell was remarkable. Bell, who was 29 years old, was living with the Lists about two miles from his own home. His people were sawmillers. The Lists' were growing potatoes and cherry fruits and conducting a boarding house. Apparently they were people who did a little of everything, but never made a success of anything.
Bell was engaged to Bertha List, the eldest daughter, and was working the place on shares with Wilfred. Wilfred, it is said, disliked the idea of Bell marrying his sister.
The tragedy happened in that afternoon of Sept. 22. List and Bell had been weeding strawberries at the corner paddock, about a mile from the house, and late in the afternoon they set out to return home through the timbered gully, known as Pennyroyal Avenue. Bell had a gun, which he habitually carried for shooting rabbits.
The news was broken to the List family by Wilfred, who returned home with the information that Hugh Bell had been shot. Members of the family went to the spot and carried the body home, where they washed and laid it out and then informed the police. Constable Brooker, of Emerald, four miles away, went over and questioned Wilfred List, who, at first said that Bell was chasing a rabbit down the hill when he tripped and the gun went off. The constable pointed out that Bell had been shot in the back of the head, and that this could not happen in the way he had stated, whereupon List altered his story and said that he (List) was carrying the gun and had tripped, owing to one of his boot soles becoming loose, causing the gun to be discharged as he stumbled forward. He said that he saw Bell fall and thought that he was pretending to be shot, and when he did not get up he went to him and found that he was dead.
    Interesting Parallel
The circumstances were reported to a local Justice, who held an inquiry and found that death was accidental.
The lad at the inquiry gave the second explanation, which was accepted, as it was the only evidence that could be submitted.
On the point, the case of the Ringwood murder, committed by Edward Landells many years ago, is an interesting parallel. Landells had taken a companion into tho scrub, shot him, and left the body lying near a log. The body was identified through the accidental discovery of a letter in the lining of the coat, and Landells was interviewed by detectives. They really knew nothing of his movements; but, leading him to assume that he and his victim had been traced to Ringwood on the day of the tragedy, they put a hypothetical case to him that the man had been shot accidentally by Landells, who had then been seized with panic at the thought of possibly being charged with murder. Landells, who was unaware that the detectives had no evidence against him, accepted this theory, and described the occurrence from that standpoint.
Left the District When he had done so he was confronted with the fact that his victim was shot from behind and above in such a position as could not possibly fit his explanation. The discrepancy sent him to the gallows.
List exhibited remarkable unconcern at the death of Bell. He left the district about three months afterwards and it was rumoured that he went to South America. His elder brother, who had travelled widely in India and elsewhere, was in Mexico at the time.
In view of this episode the List case becomes still more a problem for the criminal alienist. The List family after the tragedy behaved most strangely to the Bells, refusing to recognise them, and the outcome of the new feud that arose was a lawsuit. In which the Bell family obtained a verdict against the Lists for the recovery of the dead man's property. Wilfred Charles List8

  • 26 Sep 1883: THE S.S. LUSITANIA
The steamship Lusitania, of the Orient line, arrived yesterday afternoon from London via Capetown and Adelaide. The Lusitania, on arrival in London from Australia, was at once placed on the berth after discharge of cargo. This, together with the taking in of her outward freight, as well as the coaling, cleaning, and victualling of her, were all accomplished within the space of three weeks, and the steamer was on her way out again. Some 350 passengers represent the Lusitania's list on this voyage. Of these, 65 were landed at Adelaide, 110 have arrived here, and 175 are for Sydney. They were classified as follows:—
saloon, 35; second saloon, 85; and third-class and steerage, 230. At the Cape three were booked for Sydney, and three for Melbourne. The health rate on board has maintained a satisfactory average, and there was no sickness of a serious character.
Captain Gardoqui, who is now in command of the Lusitania, was recently chief officer of the company's steamship Orient, and he was congratulated heartily yesterday on his promotion.
With this change there has been a recasting of the appointments, and the deck officers now are—Mr. Jas. R. Smith, chief, from the Garonne; Mr John Watt second, promoted from third, Mr. H. P. Springens, formerly of Green's Blackwall line, third; and Mr. J. D. Macpherson, fourth. Dr. Lyster A Nolan is again medical officer, and Mr Shearer is chief engineer. The refrigerating machinery under his control is in thorough working order, and the passenger provisions were, as usual, kept in a cold-air chamber during the run out. The last frozen meat taken home hence by the Lusitania was landed in excellent order—all except two or three carcases, which had been exposed to a slight leak in the chamber. That, however, was no fault of the machinery. The Lusitania will again take away a large shipment of frozen meat on her return voyage.
On Mr. J. C. Gibbons the duties of the pursor still devolve, and from him we had polite and prompt delivery of files and despatches for "The Argus." The physical comfort of the passengers was as usual the special care of Mr. Ferguson, the chief steward. The Lusitania on this voyage has not been pressed, and the slightly lessened speed meant increased comfort, especially in heavy weather. The voyage from Plymouth to Port Phillip has been completed in 44 days over all, inclusive of all stoppages en route. The steaming time has been within 42 days. The Lusitania has a full cargo for the Australian ports, and, after embarking passengers and receiving mails, she left Plymouth on the 11th ult, at 10 minutes past noon. A fine weather passage was experienced to Teneriffe, where she arrived at 10 minutes to 9 on the 16th ult., and whence she sailed after coaling at half-past 5 a.m. on the 17th. The usual strong winds and lively sea prevailed south of the line, and the steamer reached Cape Town at 9 a.m. on the 31st inst. No time was lost in taking in the requisite supply of coal, and the voyage was resumed at 20 minutes past 6 p.m. same date. In steaming across the Southern Ocean the maximum latitude touched was 42deg. S., and along this parallel moderate winds from N. to S.W. and fine weather prevailed. The Lusitania reached Adelaide at 10 minutes after noon on the 23rd inst., and after landing mails, passengers, and cargo for South Australia, She left at 2 a.m. on the 24th for Melbourne. Cape Northumberland was passed at 10 minutes to 9 p.m. on the same date, and Cape Otway at half-past 8 a.m. yesterday. The Heads were entered at 20 minutes past 1 p.m. and the bay was reached at 20 minutes past 4 p.m., after a smart run round from Adelaide.
The steamer was boarded by Mr. T. D. Hammond, tide inspector and senior immigration officer, and on production of a clean bill of health from Adelaide, he proceeded at once to clear the steamer inwards. The services of the Customs steam launch Lion were availed of by Mr. E. L. Zox, M. L. A., Mr. Benjamin, Mr. Marks, Mr. Altson, and several other gentlemen of the Jewish faith to board the Lusitania and welcome the Rev. Dr. Abrahams, a rabbi who has come out from London to the Melbourne Synagogue. The steamer Rescue, with Mr. C. E. Bright and representatives from the agent's office, went to meet the Lusitania in the steamer Rescue. The Lusitania on arrival was berthed at the railway pier, Williamstown, to land passengers and discharge cargo. The pier-master had several trains brought down to the lower station in order to accommodate passengers. The Lusitania will leave for Sydney to-morrow morning.17
