William Elliott Wells was born at Bridport, Dorsetshire, in the year 1837. He came to Australia in 1855 in the sailing vessel Donald MacKay. After spending several years in near ing districts around Bendigo, he came to Melbourne early in 1869 and engagaed in building operations till 1880, when he commenced practice as an architect and estate agent in Clarendon street. For half a century the business bearing his name has been carried on successfully. Among buildings designed and carried out by Mr. Wells was the S.M.C.C. grandstand, destroyed by fire a few years ago. Deceased took a keen interest in municipal matters and was a council lor of South Melbourne prior to the division of the city into wards, and he occupied the Mayoral chair in 1886. He was warmly attached to the local Congregational Church, and a few years back took a prominent interest in Freemasonry, holding the office of P. G. S. W. in the first Victorian Grand Lodge under the Grand Mastership of the late Geo. Coppin.
Mr. Wells was predeceased by his wife seven years ago, and of their eight children three daughters and three sons survive. A fourth son, at tached to the 23rd Battalion, was killed in the Great War. This grand old man had arrived at the ripe old age of 93 years, and until the closing weeks of his life retained his physical and mental power to a marked degree. The remains were privately interred at the Brighton Cemetery on Monday last. Mr. E. A. Wells (the son of the late Mr. Wells) carries on the estate and auctioning business, and for 18 years was a councillor, and was twice Mayor. He is also president of the Children's Court and treasurer of the Homeoepathic Hospital.19
