Anecdote*Keith Cyril Darlington Dawson was born 22 January 1893 at Malvern, Victoria. He worked as a bank clerk and served in the militia before enlisting in the AIF in 1915. Dawson was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in January 1915. He embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 8 May 1915 with 24 Battalion. He served at Gallipoli and was made acting adjutant of 24 battalion. On 1 September he was confirmed as adjutant. On 3 October he was sent to hospital with influenza and was sent to Malta and then England where he was admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital with typhoid fever. After recovering from his illness Dawson remained in England, taking part in training and working as aide de camp (ADC) to General Officer Commanding (GOC) AIF Depots in the United Kingdom. In November was admitted to hospital with tonsillitis. In January 1917 Dawson rejoined 24 Battalion in France. In early April he was transferred to 23 Battalion and a few weeks later promoted to captain. Dawson was Mentioned in Despatches for his valuable services to the war. On 3 May Dawson was wounded with a gun shot wound to his right arm and face at Bullecourt. After a few weeks recovering he rejoined his unit. In August he was appointed adjutant. In November he was again admitted to hospital sick. In January 1918 he proceeded to England for selection for commission in the Indian Army. He was discharged from the AIF on 12 February 1918 to take up the commission, arriving in India in March 1918, where he was posted to the 57th Wilde's Rifles, Frontier Force at Kohat. He served as Intelligence officer with the Kohat Kurram Force from 27 June to 12 November 1919 during the 3rd Afghan War. While in India Dawson held a number of important positions, including ADC to the GOC, General Sir William Birdwood (Chief Northern Command) India from 1922 to 1924. On 28 February 1928 Dawson married Anne Marie Gonville Bromhead, youngest daughter of Major Edward Gonville Bromhead and niece of Birdwood in St James' Church, Old Delhi. Dawson was promoted to brevet major in 1930 and major in 1933. In 1940 he commanded the 12th Battalion 9th JAT Regiment and the 7th Battalion 13th Frontier Force Rifles. Dawson was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in January 1941, acting colonel in May 1941 and acting brigadier in November 1946. Dawson retired with the rank of brigadier on 25 February 1948, after serving for 30 years in the Indian Army.2

    CALCUTTA, Feb. 21.
    Delhi society was completly represented at the wedding of Miss Anne Bromhead, Lady Birdwood's niece, and Captain Keith Dawson, of Melbourne, who is attached to the 13th Frontier Rifles, and Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood's aide-de-camp. Sir William Birdwood gave the bride away. The Hon Richard Wood, son of the Viceroy (Lord Irwin), acted as page. Military officers formed a guard of honour.
    A reception at Sir William Birdwood's residence was attended by Lady Irwin, the Maharajahs of Kashmir, Bikanir, Bharatpur, Kapurthala, Dholpur, Alwar, and Patiala.
    The Viceroy, in a speech, said that it was only right that an Australia warrior should marry the niece and well-nigh daughter of a general beloved by the Anzacs.
    Presents were received from the Viceroy, Sir William Birdwood and their staffs, regimental officers and Indian princes and noblemen.
    The honeymoon will be spent in South India and thence Captain and Mrs Dawson will proceed to Melbourne. Anne Marie Dawson13

    During their recent visit to Melbourne Captain Dawson and his bride stayed at "Orrong," Clendon road, Toorak, that the former might be near his mother and sister, for whose sake Australia was chosen for the honeymoon.
    The wedding took place in Delhi—St. James's Church being beautifully decorated for the occasion. The bride, Miss Anne Bromhead, daughter of the late Major Edward Bromhead, and granddaughter of Colonel Sir Benjamin Bromhead, of Thurlby Hall, Lincoln, is the niece of Lady Birdwood, and Field Marshal Sir William Birdwood gave her away. Captain Dawson is the son of the late Peter Dawson, of The Riviera, Mentone, and Malvern. During the war he served with the Australian Expeditionary Forces, and now belongs to the 13th Frontier Force Rifles. For the past three years he has been Comptroller of the Household, and personal A.D.C. to His Excellency, the Commander-in-Chief.
    The ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Lahore, assisted by the Rev. P. N. F. Young, Chaplain of Delhi.
    The health of the bride and bridegroom was proposed at the wedding reception by the Viceroy in an apt and amusing speech. Captain and Mrs. Dawson returned to India by the Naldera. Anne Marie Gonville Bromhead6

    FOLLOWING Brig. K. C. C. Dawson’s application to acquire unused road at Beaconsfield Upper, council approved in the public interest, but only subject to the consent of adjoining landholders and to a 10ft. pathway being left on the eastern side.14

  • 1 Apr 1926: INDEFINITE WILL. INTERPRETATION BY COURT. Testator's Nine Daughters.
    An originating summons taken out to decide interesting questions arising from the construction of the will of Frederick William Lambert, of Warragul who died on October 27, 1925, came before Mr Justice Weigall in the Practice Court for determination. The matter was argued on two occasions, and Mr Justice Weigall has now delivered judgement. Testator married three times, and left a family of nine daughters. By will made on December 21, 1923, he left real estate valued at £7,540 and personal property worth £403.
    Testator directed that after payment of his debts and funeral and testamentary ex penses all his personal estate should go to his wife and children, each of his daughters to receive a legacy of £100 upon her attaining the age of 16 years. The balance of the estate was to be the property of his wife, Mrs Ruby Malvina Lambert, who was to place a tombstone on his grave. Testator also directed that Una Lambert (the only child of his second marriage) was to be looked after by his wife, who was also to provide "a home for all of my family who wish to live with my wife." The originating summons was taken out by the National Trustees Company against the widow, who now lives in Meredith street, East Malvern, and the children. The three main questions to be determined were (1) whether the real estate was covered by the will, (2) who was to take the real estate, and (3) whether the widow was under any obligation to provide for Una Lambert and to find a home for any of the children.
    It was argued for the children that the will disposed only of the personal estate, and that the words "balance of estate and belongings" referred to the personal estate. It was further contended that the real estate was not given at all, and that there was an intestacy regarding the real estate, in which event two-thirds of the real estate would go to the children and one-third to the widow. Affidavits before the Court showed that at the time testator made his will he had more than sufficient personal estate to pay in full the legacies bequeathed.
    Mr Justice Weigall reached the conclusion that the first part of the will should be read as if testator had given nine legacies of £100 out of his personal estate only, and that the words "balance of the estate and belongings" covered the real estate and the balance, if any, of the personal estate, after paying the nine legacies of £100 each to the children. In reality there was no balance of the personal estate. The result was that the real estate went to the widow. Mr Justice Weigall further held the words "Una Lambert to be looked after," which related to the provision of a home for the family, were too vague and indefinite to create a trust, and that therefore the widow took the real estate absolutely.
    Another interesting point arose in connection with the age of the children at which they were to draw the proportion of the legacy left to them. This question was whether the children could receive the leagacy before attaining the age of 21 years and give a receipt for it. Mr Justice Weigall held that, on the language of the will, the trustees werre justified in paying the legacies when the children attained the age of 16 years, and to take a receipt from each child on her attaining that age.
    The real estate of testator consisted of the land and premises known as the Orient Hotel, Warragul, which are under lease to Minna Matilda Goold until March 5, 1929. At the time of making the will testator also owned the Pine Grove Hotel, Upper Beaconsfield.
    Mr Gregory (instructed by Messrs Hedderwick, Fookes and Alston) appeared for the trustee company; Mr A H Davis (instructed by Messrs Madden, Drake and Candy, agent for Mr M Divine, of Warragul) for the widow); and Mr Burgess (instructed by Mr Vincent Nolan) for the children.12

    An action on a promissory note was heard by Judge Foster in the County Court yesterday. Archibald Francis Witham, of Queen-street, Melbourne, auctioneer, claimed from Solomon Lyons, of Park-street, St. Kilda, commission agent, £150, being the balance due on a promissory note given by Lyons. Mr. Irvine (instructed by Messrs. Dillon, Nichols and Starke) appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. Morrisson (by Messrs. Westley and Dale) for defendant.
    Evidence was given that Lyons was assisting a man named McDonald to take over the Pine Grove Hotel, Bcaconsfield, and the sum of £300 was wanted as a deposit. Plaintiff agreed to lend the money on a promissory note, with a security of a third mortgage on the hotel property, for £350. Witham acquired the second mortgage of £500 on the hotel, and when McDonald became insolvent Witham realised on his mortgages, and now claimed £150, being the balance due on the loan.
    McDonald had paid on behalf of Lyons £200 off the amount of the loan.
    Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £150, with costs. Archibald Francis Witham7

  • 27 Oct 1932: Bridget O’Donnell, of the Pine Grove Hotel, Beaconsfield Upper, was charged with unlawfully selling liquor, and with permitting a person to be unlawfully on her premises on a Sunday. Senior-constable Rowe, of the licensing branch, stated that he had visited the hotel on the Sunday in question. He interviewed Arthur John Tosford, of Emerald, who admitted that he had been supplied with liquor. After a considerable cross examination had taken place, defendant was fined £2 for unlawful disposal of liquor, with: £2/2/ costs. The other charge was withdrawn.7

    DISTRICT friends are very sorry to hear that the Donaldson family will soon be leaving Beaconsfield Upper, where Mr. Donaldson has been the licencee of the Pine Grove Hotel for many years. They gathered at the hotel on Saturday afternoon, April 3rd, to present the Donaldsons with a lovely cocktail set.
    Not only has Mr. Donaldson been a very good publican, running the hotel in a very orderly way, but he proved himself to be a worthy citizen also. The district is going to miss the friendly co-operation and help it always received from this family.9
