  • 9 Mar 1882: Mr W F A Rucker, who died on the 2nd inst., was a very old colonist, having arrived at Port Phillip from Hanover in 1837. He went into business as a merchant in Market street, Melbourne, and attained a very prominent position in the commercial world of those days. Having great faith in the future of this settlement he bought a large quantity of land in Melbourne and its neighbourhood. The suburb of Brunswick received that name from him, and he bought upwards of 1,000 acres in that locality. Rucker's-hill, Northcote, on which also he owned property was named after him. In the city proper he once possessed many sites which are now of immense value. About 1843 a financial tornado swept over the settlement, and Mr Rucker, with many others, succumbed to its force. It may be mentioned that with a view to a mitigation of the crisis, Mr Rucker and 11 other of the leading business men in Melbourne combined to offer certain terms to the banks. Owing to the number of this band they were called "The Twelve Apostles, and only one of these "apostles," viz., Mr J B Were is now alive. However, the catastrophe was not averted, and Mr Rucker was forced into the Insolvent Court.
    At a later period of his life he paid his unsatisfied creditors on that occasion to the extent of 20s in the £. Soon after the failure Mr Rucker, in partnership with the late Mr John Dight, entered into business as merchants and millers. They carried on business in Elizabeth street, and, in consequence of some objections entertained by the fire insurance companies to taking a risk on adjoining premises, the new firm were unable to insure their property. It was destroyed by fire, and the firm, which lost very heavily, dissolved partnership. Mr Rucker subsequently entered into business as a commission agent and accountant. He never took an active part in political matters, but he was thoroughly identified with the rise and pro gress of this settlement in its younger days. He opened, as agent for the Derwent and Tamar Bank, the first banking institution in Australia. He has left a family consisting of a widow and two children.10

  • 6 Oct 1892: A LEGISLATOR'S WEDDING.
    Much interest has been centred in the muptial celebrations of the senior member of the Legislative Assembly for the Geelong constituency, Mr John Rout Hopkins. The event which took place yesterday afternoon at St. Paul's Church in Latrobe-terrace had been anxiously looked forward to, especially by the fair sex; for some weeks past. A week previously the public were misled in a certain quarter, and the church was occupied by a number of persons who for a couple of hours sat in the sacred building awaiting the coming of the bridegroom, and they reluctantly retired when it was announced that a mistake as to dates had arisen. The disappointment then manifested was made up for yesterday, when St. Paul's Church was more than crowded out by the eager throng of sightseers and listeners, principally of the fair sex, who were desirous of witnessing the ceremony. The bridegroom is well known in Geelong and the surrounding districts, and the fact of his having twice previously entered the bonds of matrimony no doubt aroused the curiosity of the general public, and the assemblage yesterday afternoon scrutinised very keenly the blushing bride of 27 summers, who plighted her troth at the altar to the veteran bridegroom and popular parliamentary and municipal representative of Geelong. Interest in the wedding was taken by all sections of the community, and long before the ceremony was commenced the church was filled to overflowing, and the entrances to the sacred edifice where the nuptial knot was to be tied were inconveniently crowded by people eagerly desirous of obtaining a sight of the bride, the bridesmaids, and the wedding party. The bells in the tower of St. Paul's Church rang out a very merry peal prior to the bridal party leaving Mack's Hotel, and this undoubtedly added to the gathering, for crowds of persons from all quarters streamed towards the church, and soon the approaches to the building were literally besieged, all the efforts of half a dozen foot constables being required to keep the crowd in check. The bridal party, numbering about 30, were conveyed to and from the church in vehicles supplied by Messrs Walker and Bryant, the well-known 'bus proprietors, the handsome equipments comprising the following: Wedding carriage drawn by a pair of chestnut colored steeds, a large brougham drawn by a pair of bay colored horses, a pony phaeton drawn by a pair of brown colored ponies, a drag and waggonette each, drawn by a pair of bay colored horses.
    The happy bride was Miss Alice Roberta Purkiss, youngest daughter of the late Mr Wm. Purkiss, of Tasmania, who has been residing in Geelong for some months past as nurse to Mrs Salmon, widow of the late Dr Salmon, of Launceston (Tasmania). The bridegroom is well known in this town as a squatter in the Winchelsea district, and apart from his general social distinctions he has for many years occupied a prominent position in municipal affairs in the shires of Barrabool and Winchelsea, and latterly in the town of Geelong, whilst he has also figured in political circles as a parliamentary representative of South Grant, and within the past few months as the senior representative of Geelong in the Legislative Assembly.
    The wedding ceremony took place about half-past one o'clock, and although it was not the customary hour for such an event the charm for sightseers was so great that the church was very speedily filled directly the doors were opened, and some difficulty was experienced in keeping the people inside the building from standing on the seats and crushing into every portion of the building from which a good view of the proceedings could be obtained. Whilst the bells were ringing the merry peal and the organist, Mr F. W. Weierter, played some inspiriting music, the bridegroom quietly emerged from the vestry on the left hand side of the chancel, and occupicd a position in front of the altar railing in waiting for the bride. The bridegroom was attired in sombre black, with a beautiful buttonhole of white flowers in his coat, and whilst Mr Hopkins formed the subject of eager curiosity the bride and her attendants softly alighted from the carriages which drew up in front of the church in Latrobe-terrace. An elegant double row of Brussels carpet, with a crimson centre and grey borders, supplied by Messrs Horance Thompson and Co., of Moorabool street, formed a most pleasing passage way from the edge of the footpath aud across the footway aud porch entrance to the church. The bride aud bridesmaids were received at the church door by the Rev. W. C. Pritchard and the surplice choir of 20 boys belonging to St. Paul's Church choir, and during the passage along the left hand side of the aisle the 351st hymn was sung and chanted : (continued)8
  • 21 Dec 1897: DEATH OF MR JOHN ROUT HOPKINS
    Word was received in Geelong yesterday of the death of Mr John Rout Hopkins, which occurred early in the morning at St. Kilda. Out of respect to his memory the corporation flag, and the flags at the wool stores, the Corio Bay rowing sheds, and the Recreation Club grounds were floating at half-mast throughout the day.
    The deceased gentleman, who was for many years one of the most familiar figures about this district, came from Tasmania with his brother half a century ago and settled down in the Winchelsea district, where he acquired the property known as Wormbete Estate. He took such a keen interest in municipal affairs as to gain the title of "Father of the Local Government Act," and was identified with the Winchelsea shire council from the time of the old road board. He was several times president of that body, and also filled the chair at the Barrabool shire council. About 7 years ago he became connected with the Town Council, by which he was elected mayor, and in the maintenance of his civic dignity he proved most hospitable. He was twice connected with political life—once as representative of Grant, and later on he became associated with Mr Andrews in the representation of Geelong during the session preceding the downfall of the Patterson Government. He was a man of generous instincts, and proved a good friend to the Corio Bay Rowing Club and other sporting institutions. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family by a former marriage. Sympathetic reference was made at the Town Council to the event last evening; and a letter of condolence was ordered to be sent to the widow. The remains of the deceased gentleman will be interred in Geelong to-day.9

  • 18 Mar 1886: NATIVE NAMES. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS.
    Sir,—Your article of to-day as to native names and the great desirableness of reviving and retaining them, is well timed and worthy of great consideration. Coming as a stranger to the colony, I have been much struck with the want of originality in your nomenclature.
    It is to a large extent Cockney, and to a large extent Scotch, Englad and Ireland both contributing a share. Looking over your maps no one, I think, could deny that the native names are, in a general way, more musical in sound ; and very likely, if we knew their meanings, more evpressive and descriptive of the places. It is a pity that more of them have not been preserved, but even for what are left, it would be very interesting if some philologist would compile a gazetteer of native names of places and their meanings, before it is too late.
    The nomenclature of the colonists is often vulgar and incongruous, aud it would be well, if it were still possible, to go back to the native. Many instances will occur to anyone.
    I was at Beaconsfield the other day (itself an incongrous name), and went up a hill a mile from the station to see what was said to be one of the finest views in Victoria, finer than that from Beaconsfield Hotel, so justly lauded by your contributor, "The Vagabond."
    The view is magnificent, but the map name of the hill that gives it is Mount Misery. To correct that incongruity, some selector has dubbed it Mount Grandview—a not incongruous, but rather pretentious substitute. The hill is rather a conspicuous one, and must have had a native name, and, if any one only knew it, a restoration might be easy. There must be any number of such instances as arguments for the course you wish followed, and which, it seems, the Legislature has contemplated.—Yours, &c., NEWCOME.

  • 11 Jul 2024: Honouring Honora with new town naming
    Cardinia Council has put forward ’Honora’ as the proposed new name for Pakenham East, after a divisive discussion throughout the area about the preferred name for the new suburb.
    As detailed in the agenda for the council meeting planned for Monday 15 July, the council would vote on a motion to name the new suburb Honora and liaise with the family and Geographic Names Victoria if a suffix is required.
    The motion would also change the name of Mount Ararat South Road to Alice Road, while Mount Ararat North Road would be renamed to Mount Ararat Road.
    Over a five week period, the council received a total of 1840 valid surveys, with the majority of each category of voter voting for a different preferred name, with those living or owning land within the suburb area preferring Alice Park, residents living in Pakenham, Nar Nar Goon or elsewhere in Cardinia preferring Honora and those who live outside of Cardinia but have friends or relatives within Cardinia preferring Debra.
    However, the council officers have decided to use Honora due to Honora receiving the most first preferred votes at 636, compared with Alice Park and Debra both at 399, Honora was the second most preferred name of those responding who own property within the suburb, and Honora has the stronger link to place than Alice Park with the family name appearing on parish plans and the family still owning land and living within the suburb area.
    Honora Ryan was born in County Tipperary, Ireland in December 1836.
    On the ship to Australia, Honora Ryan met a young Irish man named Michael Carney.
    Living in the late 19th century and through to the turn of the 20th, Honora laid down the roots with her children which would see the Carney family own and farm a significant part of the land which Pakenham East is designated to be today.
    Honora Carney and her husband Michael leased a large parcel of land between Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon on the south side of Princes Highway from 1869.
    They had seven children and ran a farming business together before Michael passed away in 1880.
    Honora purchased the land south of the highway in 1887 and the land north of the highway in 1902.
    She continued to run the family farming business with her children until her death in 1912.
    Bunyip Ward councillor Graeme Moore initially put forward an alternative motion at the council’s April meeting to add the name of Honora to the list of names being considered following correspondence from the Carney family.
    “She was 44 when her husband Michael died in 1880, while raising seven children, Honora was not only determined to keep the family farm, but enhance it,“ Cr Moore explained.
    “She was a very strong, determined and smart woman in the male-dominated world of those days.”
    The descendants of Honora still live in the area today, representing five generations of farming.23
