  • 14 Sep 1907: Mr. Albert Terry, a pioneer of the brewing industry of Australia, died at "Verulam," Mont Albert road, Balwyn, on August 27. He arrived in Melbourne in 1852, and was founder and proprietor of the West End Brewery, and of the Victoria Brewery, Chapel-street South Yarra.10
  • 20 Sep 1907: Terry. - On the 27th August, at his late residence, Mont Albert-road, Balwyn, Albert Terry, in his 78th year. Interred privately, Boroondara Cemetery, Kew, on Wednesday, 28th August. We much regret to announce the death of Mr Albert Duncombe, a pioneer of the brewing trade of Australia. The late Mr. Terry was born 16th January, 1830, at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, being the youngest son of Richard Terry, brewer, of Aylesbury, the brewery having been in the family's possession for over a century.
    The late Mr. Albert D. Terry took to sea life as a young man, and went to the Gold Coast and other places on the African coast; but not being fond of sea life, soon left the sea, and afterwards served his time at Godding's Brewery, London, where he started his successful brewing career. He arrived in Victoria by the "James L. Bogart" in 1852, and started brewing for several different brewery proprietors, including Messrs. Aitken, Mercott, Murphy, Perrigalli, etc. He started in the Sixties the Victoria Brewery, Chapel-street, Prahran (now used as a warehouse).
    In 1872 the late Mr. Terry went home to England, and for a short period took to farming at Beaconsfield, England; but not making a good farmer, came back to Victoria, and started the West End Brewery, Spencer-street, and afterwards transferred his business to Flinder-street. He made three trips to England whilst in Victoria.
    Six years ago he was attacked with Blight's disease, but seemed to carry himself through well until, on 28th August, 1906, he contracted broncho pneumonia, from which he never seemed to recover his strength, and passed away on 27th August, 1907, aged 77 years. He leaves a widow and eight children, three having predeceased him. To one of his sons, Mr. E. Wright Terry, dental surgeon, Church-street, Richmond, we are indebted for many of the particulars included in this all too brief record of the deceased gentleman's career. We are sorry we cannot include a photograph of the late Mr. Terry in this issue, but hope to do so in our next.
    Always a liberal giver to charitable institutions, the deceased was noted for the kindness and benevolence which always characterized his actions through life. His brother, Mr Alfred Terry, who died in 1881, was the first brewer at the Carlton Brewery, and the immediate predecessor of Colonel Ballenger in that position. It was in connection with the old "West End" Brewery that the late Mr. Albert Terry was best known, and needless to say, he was a very old subscriber to this journal, his name being on our books for close on twenty years.
    To the widow and family we tender our condolences on the loss of a kind husband and father, and with the brewing trade of Australia we join in lamenting the decease of a pioneer, and one who at all times worked strenuously to uphold the rights and liberties of the trade, and like the pioneers that have gone before him - Latham, Thunder, Bryant, and others - earned an enviable name for honourable trading and high business qualifications.2

  • 23 Feb 1918: Special Effort Made
    Headed by Miss Ada Armytage and Miss A. Craven, the Beaconsfield Patriotic League will make a special effort this month to raise funds for the Australian Comforts Fund. Misses Craven, who have charge of the post and telegraph office at Beaconsfield, have converted one of their residential rooms into a shop for the sale of clothing, household goods, and novelties. These goods command a ready sale, and as there is no scarcity of donations the organisers intend to conduct sales until Easter. Another attraction is an entertainment to be given at the Beaconsfield Hall on Friday evening, when a returned soldier, under the theatrical name of "Haroldi," will do a conjuring turn. "Haroldi" has no fewer than twenty-seven wounds as the result of his experiences in the present war, one of his scars being received at Lone Pine. Many interest ing curios have been forwarded for exhibition. These include a pre-reformation gold cross, a Queen Elizabeth sampler, bits of mosaic from Pompeii and Rome, a cameo of the George III. period, and other relics. At the close of the entertainment various articles will be sold by auction. Alice Sarah Whittingham Craven10
  • 22 Oct 1932: Through the courtesy of Miss Armytage, president of the Officer branch, the October meeting of the Beaconsfield Upper branch was held at her home, "Holm- Park," Beaconsfield. It was decided to hold a gift afternoon at the November meeting, to provide funds for the school children's Christmas treat. An exchange of household hints brought forth new and useful ideas. The recent egg drive for the Children's Hospital held by the branch resulted in 80 dozen eggs being forwarded.11
  • 11 Apr 1933: HOUSE OF TREASURES MENACED.
    Antiques, oil paintings and historical relics, worth thousands of pounds, narrowly escaped destruction in the bush fire which swept through the hills near Berwick early today and burnt a six-roomed week-end home belonging to Mr J. Ackroyd, a city dentist.
    The fire approached within 100 yards of Miss Ada Armytage's homestead, "Holm Park," at Upper Bcaconsfield. But for a sudden change of wind Miss Armytage's home, a weatherboard house where Mr J. Binks and five children live, and other houses would most likely have been destroyed.
    Miss Armytage's house contains antiques dating back hundreds of years. They include a mirror used by Marie Antoinette, which was taken from the Tuilleries in the French Revolution; a Bible printed in 1602 (claimed to be the oldest in Australia); one of the first pianos ever built, and hundreds of pounds worth of old silver and other ornaments.
    Many of the oil paintings in the house are by famous artists of last century, and have never left the Armytage family.
    BRIGADES RUSH TO SCENE
    In the garden are trees transplanted from Mount Lebanon (Palestine), Japan and England, which would have been killed but for the quick change of wind.
    The fire was first noticed about 12.15 a.m. The Upper Bcaconsfield and Berwick Brigades were rushed up into the hills, but the strong north wind made it impossible to control the flames. Just when the position was desperate, the wind veered to the west, and soon afterwards heavy rain fell.
    Mr Ackroyd's house was furnished. It was insured.
    FIREBREAKS IN FORESTS
    In denying today that the methods of the Forests Commission in burning fire breaks were wasteful, Commissioner W. W. Gay said that the breaks were now being made only 16 feet wide, whereas formerly they were from one to three chains wide.
    Mr Gay was referring to a motion agreed to at the annual conference of the Western District Bush Fire Brigades' Association condemning the alleged present wasteful methods of burning firebreaks and recommending that breaks be burnt in early spring or late autumn as the accumulation of debris was considered by the conference to be a menace to the forest and also the landowners.
    Mr Gay said that it was now the practice of the Commission to burn back a chain or two from the fire breaks in the early spring or autumn, so that the breaks could be kept free of rubbish or debris.
    MEANS OF COMMUNICATION
    "The question of the width of fire breaks was considered at a State-wide conference of the Bush Fire Brigades Association two years ago," said Mr Gay, "and it was then agreed that the policy of the Commission was satisfactory.
    "Many people have the idea that fire breaks are made solely to stop fires. This is incorrect, as they are also made to provide a rapid means of transit to the heart of the forests and as a general means of communication. Our only regret is that we have not got sufficient money to make more so that the forests can be made more accessible." Joseph Ackroyd, James Binks Upper Beaconsfield12
  • 7 Sep 1939: The sudden death on Sunday of Miss Ada Elizabeth Armytage, of Beaconsfield, has deprived many young people, as well as returned soldiers and their dependants, of a warm friend.
    Miss Armytage worked for the soldiers first by selling a small Belgian flag during the Great War, and button and flag days followed so closely that she may be said to have originated these here.
    Besides working for the Red Cross and the Comforts Fund, Miss Armytage was greatly interested in the Boy Scout movement. She was responsible for the building of the Scout hall at Berwick and the 1st Dandenong Scouts' Company was called, in her honour, "Armytage's Own." During the Great World Jamboree of 1935, Holm Park, Miss Armytage's home at Beaconsfield, was the scene of the camp, and she entertained Scouts of 29 different nationalities.
    Miss Armytage's remains were cremated at Springvale.
    Arrangements were made by A. A. Sleight Pty Ltd, St. Kilda road, Melbourne.13

LEGON.—Friends of the late Mr James Legon (of Officer) are respectfully informed that his remains will be interred in the Berwick Cemetery.
Funeral to leave Pakenham Hospital at 10.30 am arriving at Cemetery 11 am THIS DAY (Thursday June 29.)14
