Archive* | 1896 | ELIZABETH MAY. Sworn States I am a married woman residing vith my husband at Beaconsfield - know Mrs. L. L. Smith the last witness know her house at Beaconsfield I take charge of that house when it is empty - I have been looking after it for about two and a half years - It was in my charge from the 20th June till 12th July of last year - There was no one living in it during that period - I went to the house once during that time - I had an inventory of the articles in the house - Mr and Mrs Lamb Smith were the last tenants in the house - I checked the inventory when they were there - I was in the house a week before the 20th June 1895 - On the 20th June 1895 everything was correct in the house according to the inventory - On the 12th July I visited the house I think that was the date I found some one had been in the house - On going to the back door and putting the key in the lock I found I could not open the door - I then got into the bedroom on the verandah by unlockin the door - I found things were missing - I missed a carpet off the floor , bed clothes , a pillow. The bedclothing consisted of colored blankets - I found the curtains gone - They were common white lace ones - I found a small piece broken out of the window pane near the catch - I also missed a red damask curtain which used to hang round some shelves - I then went home - I returned on the evening of the 12th July with Constable Roberts and my husband at about 8 o'clock - My husband got through a front window and opened the front door - The catch of the window was broken and there were marks under the window that would be made by a bar of iron - After getting into the house I missed all the pillows and bed clothing from the front beds - All the linen was missing - It was kept in the front bed room in a drawer - We went to the other bedroom and found all the bed clothes missing - a white quilt a double white blanket and a pillow - I found the back room door snibbed on the inside - I was in the habit of going in and out the back door - When I last went out of it I locked it with the key. The quilt produced I know - I know it by its pattern - I recognise the towels produced by the marks - The dinner set produced is Mrs Smith's - I have a piece of it in my possession - I did not give or sell or dispose of these articles to anyone nor did I authorise anyone to take them - I value the articles at about ten pounds Elizabeth May.5 |
