  • 30 Jul 1881: LEGAL NEWS. In the Equity Court on Tuesday, before his Honour Mr. Justice Stephen the suit Flint v. Strettle was commenced and disposed of. The plaintiff, Mrs. Catherine Flint, sought to recover from William Strettle, the executor to the estate of her late father, who carried on business as cattle salesman in Bourke street, Melbourne, a legacy amounting to £500, payable under her late father's will.
    Mr. Topp appeared on behalf of the plaintiff, and Mr. A'Beckett for the defendant. After some arguments by counsel, the parties consented to a decree directing the defendant to pay the amount in question in two instalments of £250 each, the first payment to be made on the 1st prox., and the balance on the 1st February, 1882. His Honour ordered each side to pay its own costs. Catherine Strettle4
  • 17 Jul 1885: A sad event is reported from Berwick Mr. William Strettle, well known as a stock and station agent, was found dead in his bedroom at the residence of his brother, Mr. Stratford Strettle, on Wednesday night. After he retired a pistol shot was heard in his apartment by some friends in another part of the house, and they ran immediately to see what had occurred. They found Mr. Strettle dead on the floor with a bullet wound on the top of his head. Immediately above where the body lay was a revolver hanging in its usual place on the wall, and with one chamber discharged. It is presumed that in passing under the weapon Mr. Strettle slipped, and in attempting to recover himself accidentally touched the revolver and caused it to fire the shot.5
  • 22 Jul 1885: ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF MR. WILLIAM STRETTLE.
    We regret to have to record the death of Mr. William Strettle, brother of Mr. Stratford Strettle, of Glady's Park, Berwick, and the well-known auctioneer of Melbourne. It appears that a few gentlemen were spending the evening of Wednesday last with Mr. Strettle, at his residence, and had enjoyed themselves, deceased being in excellent spirits during the evening, as he usually is. It was late before they retired, and all had indulged, as gentlemen do, in something to drink, to pass away the time pleasantly. About two o'clock deceased left to go to bed, and Mr. Stratford Strettle seen him to his room. He kept a pistol hanging on a nail in his bedroom always loaded, which he seldom used, but all knew it was there. By some means or other deceased in going into his room knocked the pistol down and perhaps fell himself, but no one can tell, as he was alone, and the result was the pistol going off and sending the bullet into him, striking him on the crown of the head. Dr. Wilson, who was one of the guests, did what he could, but it was impossible to do anything, as it was evidently a fatal injury. Dr. Elmes was also sent for, but nothing could be done, and the unfortunate gentleman died shortly afterwards. His friends and those who knew him regret his melancholy death, as he was a most amiable gentleman.
    An inquest was held by Dr. Candler on Saturday last, when the following were empanelled as a jury:—Messrs. W. Buck (foreman), Espie, Hunt, Neal, Richardson, McDonald, Burns, Smith, Longmore, Brown, Elms, McCarthy and Wilson.
    Mrs. Jessie Strettle examined, stated that deceased was her brother-in-law. He spent the evening of Tuesday with her husband and some gentlemen who were present. Had been in bed about an hour and a half, when about half-past twelve she heard her husband say, " Willie, you had better go to bed," and shortly afterwards heard both walking on the verandah towards deceased's bedroom. Heard her husband return, shutting the front door, and then go to her little son's room, the boy being unwell. About five minutes afterwards heard a shot, and immediately got out of bed to see what was the matter. Dr. Wilson was one of their visitors, and she knocked at his door and asked him to come out, as she did not like to disturb Mr. Strettle, who was subject to illness which was dangerous through excitement. Went, however, to her son's room, and asked him to come with her. Went with him to deceased's room and found Dr. Wilson there. He had a light with him, and they found deceased lying on the floor, bleeding from the crown of his head. Mr. Strettle was very much affected and she tried to get him away. He was got out, and Dr. Wilson prevented him from going into the room again.
    James Summers, manager for Mr. Strettle, examined, stated that he was called about three o'clock on Wednesday morning. Went to deceased's room and found him laying bleeding on the floor, and Dr. Wilson with him. Assisted Dr. Wilson to lay him on the bed. Saw a revolver on the table, one of the chambers of which had recently been discharged. Two others were empty, but had been discharged a long time previously. Saw deceased during the previous evening, and he was in his usual good health and spirits.
    Dr. Wilson, examined, deposed that he was at Gladys park on the evening of the 14th inst., in attendance on one of Mr Strettle's children. After dinner he was in the billiard room in company with deceased, his brother, Mr. Sykes, and, during the earlier portion, Dr. Elmes, with whom he had consulted. The party broke up about 2 a.m. or a little later. Having seen the sick child and left Mr. Stratford watching it, he went to bed. Was aroused by Mrs. Strettle, and, on accompanying her to William Strettle's room, found the door three-fourths open and no light burning. The deceased was lying in the corner near the washstand. The revolver lay about nine inches or a foot from his right hand, which was over his left breast. The muzzle of the revolver was turned away, the handle being towards the deceased. He was quite unconcious. On examination a bullet was found in the top of the skull, on the right side of the head. Witness attended him until he died at half-past ten o'clock on Wedesday night, about twenty hours after the injury. He was perfectly unconscious all that time and never stirred. Dr. Elmes was called in on Wednesday morning, but no surgical treatment would avail. The hair for an inch round the wound was scorched. There was no unpleasantness during the evening, and never saw deceased more genial. Had known him eight years.
    Dr. Elmes deposed that he had made an exterior examination of the body of the deceased. There were no marks of violence of any kind. On the right side of the head, and near the central line, there is a small wound, with the usual appearance of a gunshot wound. There was no scorching of the hair or integuments. The cause of death was the gunshot wound. It was necessarily a fatal shot. I am at a loss to understand how the deceased could have lived so many hours after the injury. From the course of the shot through the head and from the wound on the top of the head the firearm if held at all must have been held almost perpendicularly above the right side of the head. I saw the deeased two or three hours after the accident and washed the wound. I saw no powder marks on the scalp. The bullet produced, taken from the wound, corresponds with one of these taken from the revolver now on the table.—To the Coroner: Considered it impossible for deceased to have fired the pistol and make the wound which had been inflicted, as in the ordinary way of holding a revolver the ball would go in another derection. It is impossible that deceased could have caused the wound with his own hand. The only explanation he could give was that deceased was endeavoring to get to the washtanud in the dark, and in doing so scrambled against the wall and knocked off the revolver; or that he was staggering about the room and knocked the revolver on the floor; and then, having picked it up, he was trying in the dark to put it back on the nail, was still in a stooping position, holding the pistol by the barrel with the muzzle pointing downwards, then the pistol went off, perhaps, the trigger catching against the nail, with his weight dragging it. That is the only solution I came to after making a post-mortem examination. Am clearly of opinion that deceased did not commit suicide.
    Dr. Wilson re-examined: I concur with the evidence of Dr. Elmes as to the position in which the revolver must have been. I don't think the wound was a suicidal one. I had a theory when I examined the woodwork, and found a deep indent almost semi-circular, that some one had struck the pistol and turned it round, and that after the nail caught the trigger and went off the rebound threw the pistol on the floor. Now, I think Dr. Elmes' theory is the most likely. The dent may have been produced the other way. I think it impossible that a man could have taken his own life while holding the revolver above his head as this must have been.
    After some further evidence, the coroner summed up, and the jury, after a short deliberation, brought in a verdict "That the deceased, William Strettle, died on the 15th inst. from a gunshot wound in the head, accidentally inflicted by himself with a revolver."6
