  • 6 Nov 1940: MRS DOROTHY SEYMOUR COLLYER
After an illness lasting several months, the death occurred on Sunday last of Mrs Dorothy Seymour Collyer, wife of Mr S. R. Collyer, of Union St., Brighton, and the daughter of Mr and Mrs J. T. Chapple, highly esteemed residents of Berwick.
The late Mrs Collyer, was well known and universally liked in the Berwick district, where she spent so many years of her life. A brilliant scholar, she completed her education under Miss Patterson at the Presbyterian Ladies’ Collage, Berwick, and was afterwards head-mistress of various schools. She comes of a Christian family that stands high in the estimation of Berwick folk, and to them and the bereaved husband and his three children, goes out the sincere sympathy of the whole district.
The large gathering at the graveside when the funeral took place at the Berwick Cemetery on Monday, told eloquently of the deep sense of loss felt by a large circle of friends.
Mr F. A. Singleton conducted the service at the home and also assisted Rev. Cadwallader Jones at the graveside. Both paid sincere tributes to deceased’s fine character, and condoled with her family in the sad blow that had befallen them.
Mr J. T. Chapple, father of the deceased, is the esteemed secretary of the Berwick Agricultural Society, many members of which attended the funeral.5

  • 12 Apr 1894: THE MARRIAGE OF MISS HARRIS AND DR. BURD.
The marriage of Miss Isabella Harris, youngest daughter of Mr W. J. Harris, J.P., of Halwill Manor, with Dr Burd, of Okehampton, was solemnized at Halwill Church yesterday morning. The weather was beautiful, and if there any truth in the adage that "Happy is the bride whom the sun shines on," then the bride must have been extremely happy, for never has Old Sol shone with greater brilliancy than he did yesterday. The ceremony took place at noon, long before which hour the little church was crowded by visitors from all the country side. At the entrance to the church, which is situated close to the mansion, an arch of evergreens had been erected by Cutler, Dart, and Parsons. On one side was the motto, "God bless the bridal pair," and on the otter side were the words, "May they be happy." The bridal party walked to the church, the path being carpeted. As the bride entered, leaning on the arm of her father, the organist, who for this occasion was Major Bearne, of Newton Abbot, a friend of the family, played "The voice that breathed o'er Eden," which was heartily sung by the congregation. The bride was attired in a white silk damask, trimmed with pearls and a Honiton lace veil, with a wreath of orange blossoms. She was attended by five bridesmaids, Miss Marion Harris (her sister), Miss Daisy Thornhill (her cousin), Miss Thursfield, Miss Catherine Burd (niece of the bridegroom) and Miss Kathleen Harris (niece of the bride). They were attired in blue flowered silk, with white chip trimmed with ostrich feathers and silk. Each wore a chrysophrase brooch, and carried a basket of flowers, gifts of the bridegroom. The bride's mother wore a pearl grey satin brocade, with a black lace bonnet, and she carried a shower bouquet of pink roses. The Rev Edward Puttock, Rector of Halwill, officiated, and after the ceremony delivered an appropriate address. The bride was given away by her father. The bridegroom was attended by Mr Richard Dunning, of Throwleigh, as best man.
Previous to the Rector's address the hymn, "Oh, perfect love," was sung, and on the bridal party leaving the church the organist played "The Wedding March." The interior of the little church was elaborately decorated with plants and flowers. The presents, which numbered 137, were displayed in the morning room, and were much admired.
Mr W. J. Harris gave his daughter a handsome pianoforte, and Mrs Harris gave her a set of house linen. Two serving dishes were the gifts of the Manor servants "with best wishes and congratulations." The parishioners were invited to the house on Friday last, when they were afforded an opportunity of inspecting the presents, and were entertained at tea. The house party yesterday were Mr and Mrs Hy. Thornhill, of Kensington ; Mr Hy. Wright, Mr. Somers, Mr Henry James, Misses Violet and Daisy Thornhill, Dr Meadows (Saltash), and Mrs Percy Barlow. The visitors were numerous and they were entertained to an "At Home" by Mrs Harris. The wedding party was photographed by Mr Hayman, of Launceston. At the railway station detonators were discharged in honour of the event, and in the evening the villagers celebrated the occasion by a dance. The newly wedded pair drove to Okehampton, and left for Eastbourne. They intend to spend their honeymoon on travel. The bride's travelling dress was of fawn and blue Tweed. Carriages were supplied by Mr Verdi, of the White Hart Hotel, Okehampton, and Mr Dicker, of Martin's Lane, Exeter, provided the bouquets. After the ceremony merry peals were rung on the church bells. • 22 Aug 1919: OKEHAMPTON WEDDING. Major Edmund Burd and Miss Esther M. Burd.
Much interest was felt in the district in the marriage of Miss Esther Mary Burd, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. G. V. Burd, of Okehampton, and Major Edmund Burd, Indian Army, son of Mr. E. P. Burd, which was solemnised in the Parish Church of Okehampton on Wednesday. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. Milner, Rector of Belstone. Dr. Burd gave away his daughter, who was attended by Miss C. E. Burd (sister of the bridegroom), and Miss I. K. E. Burd and Miss G. V. Burd (her own sisters). Captain T. U. Burd, M.C., R.A.F., accompanied the bride-groom as best man.
The bride and her bridesmaids formed a charmingly picturesque group, the former wearing a dainty gown of white Georgette over silk, the skirt inset with a flounce of Honiton lace, while the corsage and short sleeves, all hemmed with pearls, were completed by long wing-draperies, pearl edged, which fell over the skirt at each side and partly veiled the deep ceinture of pale blue satin ribbon, that was headed by a wreath of silver leaves and orange-blossoms. A beautiful old Honiton lace veil (lent by Mrs. P. J. Garratt, aunt of the bride; was also worn by Miss Burd. It was arranged in cap fashion, secured by a narrow line wreath of orange-blossoms, and fell in graceful folds into a short train at the back. The bride's ornaments included a sapphire and diamond ring, a gift from the bridegroom, who also gave her Honiton lace and a mother-of-pearl fan. The three bridesmaids were in pretty frocks of "love-in-a-mist" blue Georgette, with long trails of marguerites and their green stems appliqued and embroidered on the draped skirts, and old Brussels rose-point lace fichus trimming the corsages, which were completed by swathed ceintures of gold tissue and blue Georgette, in which sprays of marguerites and white heather were tucked. Their caps of gold tissue were held in place by wreaths of marguerites, gold tissue leaves, and white heather, resting on the hair. Gold peacock brooches were their souvenir gifts from the bridegroom.
There was no formal reception after the ceremony, only the near relatives and a few intimate friends returning to the residence of the bride's parents to see Major and Mrs. Edmund Burd off with good wishes and congratulations on their honeymoon.
The bride's and bridesmaids' gowns and millinery were designed and made by Messrs. Colson and Co., Exeter.8

  • 27 Apr 1921: FASHIONABLE WEDDINGS. Captain J. M. Burd and Miss N. M. Langran at Axminster.
The marriage of Miss Norah Mary Langran, third daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Langran, of "The Lawn," Axminster, to Captain John Marsh Burd, M.C., R.F.A., (attached R.A.F.), only son of Dr. and Mrs. G. V. Burd, of "Wingfield," Mount Radford Crescent, Exeter, was solemnised yesterday afternoon in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Axminster. The popularity of the bride and her family was reflected in the keen interest taken in the wedding by all sections of the townspeople. The pretty little church was too small to accommodate any more than just the numerous and fashionable gathering of invited guests, but crowds gathered round to see the bride enter, and to shower good wishes on her and her husband as they left the church after the ceremony. Sisters of the Loretta Convent, Axminster, were responsible for the beautiful decoration of the interior of the sacred edifice, where white clematis were entwined round the branches of the golden candle-sticks beside the chancel rails, in front of which a prie dieu each draped with white silk brocade with sacred emblems in gold, had been placed for the bride and bridegroom. Tall arum lilies and other white flowers adorned the chancel, too, and the altar, with its many softly gleaming tapers, bore a wealth of white roses and lilies and pink pelagorniums. under the rich blues and gold and greens and rose-colour of the East window. The pulpit was also bright with blossom, and white lilac branches and big clusters of primroses filled the side window.
The marriage ceremony was impressively conducted by the Very Rev. Consignor Canon Gandy. Miss Wells, organist of St. Augustine's, Stamford, Lincolnshire, presided at the organ, improvising charming festal music while the congregation assembled, and playing Mendelssohn's Wedding March as the bridal party left the church. An unusual feature of the service was the Easter Hymn by Frank Briely, "Let Joy find Praise to Heaven arise," beautifully sung from the organ gallery by the bridegroom's two bridesmaid sisters, while the register was being signed.
The bride, who was given away by her father, was charming in a draped gown at soft ivory charmeuse, with a long full train from the shoulders of brocaded ivory crepe de chene, with festooned chains of pearls at each side, and a bow of tulle and orange blossom on the hem. Her veil, of lovely old Honiton lace (lent by the bridegroom's aunt), was arranged off the face under a slender wreath of myrtle and white heather, and she carried a sheaf of Harrissi lilies. A diamond and sapphire brooch, the gift of the bridegroom, fastened the charmeuse folds of the corsage of her gown. Two small girls—Miss Myrtle Knight (the bride's cousin) and Miss Althea Hart—officiated as train-bearers. They wore accordeon-pleated frocks of ivory Georgette, and ivory chiffon veils tinder silver wreaths.
The bridesmaids—Miss Kathleen Langran and Miss Doreen Langran (sisters of the bride, and Miss Kate Burd and Miss Grace Burd (the bridegroom's sisters)—were a picturesque quartette, wearing dainty frocks in pale sweetpea shades, one pink, one blue, one mauve, and one yellow. Their dresses were of satin mousseline, with fine silver lace veiling the skirts, and Georgette, with silver cord outlining the necks and scalloped sleeves, composing the bodices, and sweetpea petals forming narrow ceintures. They wore also graceful chiffon veils to match their frocks, held in place by wreaths of silver leaves, and carried bouquets of many-coloured sweetpeas. White-heather brooches in gold, with pearls for the tiny flower bells, were their souvenir gifts from the bridegroom. Capt. Burd was in the blue-grey uniform of the Air Force, and was accompanied, as "best man," by Capt. Doyle (late R.A.F.), who was also in uniform. Mr. R. Talbot ushered the guests to their places in church.
An elaborate arch of evergreens, studded with cream roses and clusters of primroses, had been erected at the foot of the church path, which, winding up between evergreen fences, was carpetted with striped drugget. Axminster schoolchildren had gathered the quantities of primroses needed for the decorations, and three of them, two girls and a small boy, scattered basketsful of the blooms before the bride and bridegroom as they left the church.
Dr. and Mrs. Langran (the latter wearing a gown of figured navy blue foulard, with embroidered fawn cloak, and a black satin hat, and carrying a bouquet of dark red carnations, held a reception at "The Lawn" after the ceremony. A grey crepe de chene gown, bead-embroidered, and accordeon-pleated cloak of grey gaberdine, were worn, with a grey hat, relieved with rose-coloured waxed blooms, by Mrs. Burd, mother of the bridegroom.
Captain and Mrs. J. M. Burd left later for Cornwall for the honeymoon, the bride travelling in a smart frock of mastic charmeuse, embroidered and faced back with deep turquoise blue, and worn with a blue-lined mastic gaberdine cloak, and a hat of mastic crepe de chene with lace brim, trimmed with a blue flower spray.
An arch, erected by "The Lawn" gardener, composed of evergreens, arums, daffodils and rhododendron blooms, with a horseshoe in the middle entwined with blue and white ribbons, decorated the front entrance of the residence in honour of the wedding.
The bells of the Parish Church were rung during the afternoon in compliment to the event.6
