  • 26 May 1898: Upper Beaconsfield.—A very successful and well attended garden fete was held on the 7th April in the grounds of "Salisbury House," kindly lent for the occasion by the Misses Hedrick, in aid of the Children's Hospital. A variety of amusements were provided. Fancy, flower, fruit, confectionery and refreshment stalls were all well patronised, and the business greatly enhanced by Short's Military Band, which played the latest music during the afternoon. The other attractions were tennis, croquet, fine art gallery, archery, etc. In the evening a concert was held in the Assembly Hall, where there was an excellent programme of songs and recitations, rendered by local musicians and assisted by Miss Henriette Ridley, a wellknown Melbourne vocalist, who sang two songs and joined Mr. Elcoate in the duet "The Sailor Sighs," which was pronounced the gem of the evening. Miss Hedrick was hon. treasurer and Mr. Glismann hon. secretary, and may both be complimented on the success which crowned their efforts. The amount to be handed over to the institution will be about £25. , Barbara Amy Hedrick, Annie Thomson Hedrick, Hans Glismann19
  • 14 Sep 1898: Upper Beaconsfield.
On Friday night a most successful concert was held in the Assembly Hall, at which the audience was large and highly appreciative. The affair was originated to raise the wherewithal to provide prizes for the children attending the local State school, and the result should be gratifying to all concerned. The children sang se veral numbers, of a class much superior to those usually given, and to Mr. Elcoate, their teacher, a special word of praise is due. The programme included the following items :-Piano solo, "Country life," Miss Alice Renfree; song, "The lost chord," Miss G. Orgill; skirt dance Miss Elsie Rosa ; song, " Barney O'Hea, Mrs. Titcher (encored); song, '"To horse," Mr. Elcoate; club swinging, Miss Connie Martyn (very heartily received); duet, " Palashki's banner," Miss G. Orgill and Mr. Elcoate; skirt dance and Highland fing, Miss Fraser; song, "The clang of the wooden shoon," Master Elcoate (of St. Paul's choir); piano duet, "Mazeppa, Miss Ella Stevens and Miss Halleur; song, " When they put him in trousers," Miss Connie Martyn (encored); song, "Eternal rest," Mrs.Titcher; song, "The old brigade," Master Elcoate; duet "Larboard Watch," very well sung by Messrs. Elcoate" and Fraser. Messrs R.R . Bain and Fraser supplied the comic element, and, judging by the frequent encores and hearty applause, they pleased the audience immensely. Most of the accompaniments were played by Mr Manger, who materially assisted in the success of the songs. At the termination of the concert a social dance was held, at which there was a very good attendant Under the able direction of Mr. Woodley everything passed off happily, and terpaichore was indulged in with zest. Mr. and Mrs. Woodley provided the music.20
  • 24 Apr 1899: DISAPPEARED AT SEA. FROM THE PATEENA. DEATH OF A VICTORIAN RESIDENT.
The trip of the steamer Pateena, which arrived from Melbourne on Saturday morning, was marked by a sad event. When the vessel left Melbourne she had among her passengers Robert Teesdale Elcote, a middle-aged man, hailing from Northcote, Victoria, and who occupied a saloon cabin. He conversed with a number of those on board, and there was nothing in his manner to arouse the suspicions of the stewards or officers. Elcote was seen several times during the evening strolling about, and appeared to be fairly animated.
At seven o'clock on Saturday morning, when the bedroom steward entered his cabin, Elcote was missing, a small handbag, which constituted his only luggage, being all there was in the compartment. As Teesdale could not be found among other passengers who were early risers, a search of the vessel was instituted, and a distressing discovery made on the after deck. On a grating that runs round the stern and near the wheel box were found a hard felt black hat, short overcoat, and an ordinary coat, which last-mentioned articles had been pulled off together. The clothing was recognised as belong ing to the missing passenger. A further search having failed to find any trace of Teesdale, it was conjectured that he had either fallen overboard or com mitted suicide, and his belongings were taken charge of by the chief steward. The hand bag was locked, and the key was found enclosed in a letter, which was discovered in the berth he had occupied. The letter was stamped, and addressed "Mr. G. Stearne, C.E., care of Town Hall, Northcote, Victoria."
On arrival in port all Elcote's belongings were handed over to the police, Detective-Sergeant Brannan and Sergeant Gandy taking charge of them. The letter when opened was found to have been written by Teesdale, and in it he complained of having had considerable worry and anxiety, which had preyed on his mind. He further asserted that he contemplated committing suicide, and concluded by asking forgiveness and praying that God would have mercy on his wife and family.
When the bag was opened it was found to contain a pyjama suit, pair of cuffs, sleeve links, watch and chain, and a ring, while in the pockets of the coats eightpence was found.11
  • 24 Apr 1899: TASMANIA. LAUNCESTON, Saturday.
"When the steamer Pateena arrived from Melbourne this morning, the captain reported that Robert Teasdale Elcoate, a saloon passenger, had disappeared during the voyage. Elecote joined the vessel at Melbourne, and when last seen at night there was nothing in his manner to arouse suspicion. At 7 this morning the bedroom steward, on entering his cabin, found him missing. On the grating at the stern of the vessel an overcoat and inside coat were found, both having been taken off together. Search was made and nothing was seen of the man. In the cabin was found a letter stamped, and addressed " G. Stearne, C.E., care of Town Hall, Northcote, Victoria," and in it was the key of a handbag. These were handed to the police, and in the bag were a pair of cuffs, watch and chain, eight pence, sleeve links, and a pyjama suit. In the letter deceased complained of having troubles, said he intended committing suicide, and concluded by asking forgiveness, and that " God would bless his wife and children."21
  • 26 Apr 1899: Mr. Robert Elcoate, head teacher of the Upper Beaconsfield state school, committed suicide on Saturday last, by jumping over the side of the s.s. "Pateena" which was bound for Tasmania, no reason is assigned for the rash act.22
  • 29 Apr 1899: A saloon passenger named Elcote was missed on the arrival of the steamer Pateena at Launceston, from Melbourne. A letter found amongst Elcote's effects shows that he was-worried, and contemplated suicide.23
  • 13 May 1899: Many of our readers will remember Mr R. T. Elcoate formally Assistant Master of Hokitika State School and they will learn of deep regret of his sad death. A Launceston Telegram in the Zeehan and Dundas Herald dated April 23rd — "Robert Teasdale Elcoate a middle aged Man who was a saloon passenger on the Steamer Pateena from Melbourne was missing fro his cabin yesterday morning. Search was made and on the railing at the stern of the steamer was found an overcoat and an ordinary Coat together. In the cabin was found a Hat and a small Hand-Bag which was his only luggage also a letter Stamped and addressed G. Stearnes , Civil Engineer, Northcoate, Victoria. In the letter was the key for the bag. On arrival of the steamer in Launceston the letter was opened and said he contemplated suicide. He concluded by asking that God might forgive him and have Mercy on his wife and family. So far as his friends here know Mr Elcoate had not again married and it is conjectured his mind had become unhinged.24
