  • 14 Aug 1941: TEST SELECTOR PASSES. Sudden Death of Mr W. J. Johnson.
One of Victoria's best-known cricket personalities, Mr W. J. ("Bill") Johnson, V.C.A. treasurer and State and Test selector, died suddenly at his home today. He was 57.
AFTER attending his business at Kensington yesterday, Mr Johnson complained of a pain last night, and was visited by Dr. Roy Park, an old friend, and one of his co-State selectors. After a cup of tea, Mr Johnson had a fatal neart seizure at about 8 a.m. today.
He is survived by a widow, two cricketing sons, Ian and Colin, and a brother, Joe. Ian, South Melbourne and Victorian all-rounder, is now Leading Aircraftman in R.A.A.F., stationed at Deniliquin (N.S.W.) Colin, North Melbourne all-rounder, is in Military Camp at Mt. Martha.
The flag on the V.C.A. building was flown half-mast today as a tribute to Mr Johnson. The funeral will leave his residence, 204 Page Street, Middle Park, at 3 p.m. tomorrow, for Footscray Cemetery. Arrangements are in the hands of Joseph Allison Pty. Ltd., North Brunswick.
Mr Johnson's death, which removes a popular figure from Australian cricket, will be widely regretted, and nowhere more than at North Melbourne, where he has been an outstanding cricket personality for years. As a successful slow spin bowler and useful bat, he played for North, first, as junior, from 1905 to 1931, and had a game or two for Victoria in 1924. He was North Melbourne C.C. treasurer from 1908 to 1939, when he became a vice-president of his club. He became a V.C.A. delegate in 1927. After some years on the Victorian Cricket Association executive, Mr Johnson, three years ago, succeeded the late Mr Stott as V.C.A. treasurer. He privately accompanied W. M. Woodfull's 1930 Test team to England, and helped to choose Australian sides for the 1936-7 series in Australia and 1938 tour of England. He has been a Victorian cricket selector for a number of years. — P. J. Millard.4

  • 24 Apr 1875: A SAD AFFAIR.
A tragical occurrence has taken place at Mr. Wm. Robertson's station, writes the Colac correspondent of the Geelong Times.
William Carstairs, who is employed on the station, was brought in to Colac on Wednesday in the custody of the police, and charged with attempting to commit suicide. The particulars of the offence, and the causes that led to it, are as follows :— "Carstairs and his wife were in a state of liquor when they retired at night, and the result was the smothering of their infant child of five months old, who was in bed with them. On Wednesday morning, about twelve o'clock, Senior constable Hall went out, in consequence of learning the fact, and arrived just in time to prevent Carstairs, who was apparently on the verge of madness, from throwing himself into a caldron of scalding water. Before this he had swallowed nearly a quart of kerosene, and no doubt was suffering intense pain, which probably incited him to seek death, he was, however, prevented by Senior-constable Hall, after a severe struggle, and ropes having been procured, his arms were bound, and he was conveyed to the Colac lock-up. The dead body of the child was brought in also to await an inquest. Dr. Rae was speedily summoned, and he contrived to force Carstairs stomach to disgorge the unpalatable liquid he had taken, proceeding in placing him out of danger. The rash man is said to bear an excellent character, and to be of a very respectable family, and no reason can be assigned for his insane act, except grief at the death of his child. His unfortunate wife was drunk on Wednesday morning, and Constable Hall returned to the Hill this afternoon for the purpose of taking her into custody. In the evening she was lodged in the lock-up.
On Thursday an inquest was held on the body of the infant Carstairs, and a verdict of accidental death was returned. The mother was severely reprimanded for being in a state of intoxication when she overlaid the child.
Carstairs, who had been in custody, was discharged. Mary Carstairs, John Carstairs8

Mary Carstairs, who, it will be remembered, caused the death of her infant some time back by overlaying it whilst in a state of intoxication, was brought up at the Police Court to-day, charged with threatening to kill her husband, David Carstairs, who deposed that she was nearly always the worse of liquor, and on such occasions he was afraid she might grievously injure him. The decision of the Bench was that Mary Carstairs be bound over to keep the peace for six months—herself in one surety of £50, and two sureties of £25 each. The sureties were not forthcoming, and this victim of intemperance will therefore be consigned to the Geelong Gaol, there to moralise over the follies of the past.7

  • 25 May 1895: It is quite evident that visitors to this town yesterday, included one or more of the light-fingered gentry, as shown by the reports to the police. Miss Sarah Carstairs, a resident of 152 Corio-street, while at the football match played on the Eastern Oval, states that whilst she was watching the progress of the match at an exciting period of the game she felt someone press against her breast pocket, in which she had her watch concealed. Being of the opinion that someone might relieve her of the timekeeper, she removed it and put it into her dress pocket, but some time afterwards was astonished to find it gone. The watch, which is valued at £3 10s, is a silver hunting keyless, and is numbered 88,840. Constable O'Mara is giving his attention to the matter.6

  • 22 Apr 1875: SAD ACCIDENT AT COLAC. [By Electric Telegraph.] (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Colac, Wednesday Evening.
A Mrs Carstairs, wife of David Carstairs, a gardener employed at Mr W. Robertson's, has accidentally smothered her child, an infant five weeks old, by overlaying on it. Whilst in a state of intoxication her husband attempted to commit suicide by swallowing a bottle of kerosene, and has to be constantly watched, as he threatens to try again if an opportunity offers. David Carstairs, Mary Doody4
David Carstairs, Mary Carstairs5
