Newspaper-Articles

  • 1 Jun 1895: SIR ARTHUR SNOWDEN. Sir Arthur Snowden has achieved the distinction of knighthood after comparatively few years of public life. He was only elected for Lonsdale Ward as recently as October, 1891, and has represented that ward in the City Council up to the present. He was first elected Mayor of Melbourne on 10th October, 1892, or a year after he took his seat in the council, and has since been twice re-elected, his third term of office expiring in October next.
Victoria's new knight was born in Dartford, Kent, his father being in business in that town. After leaving school he parted life as a law writer, and at the age of 23 decided to seek his fortune in Australia. He sailed by the steamer Great Britain on her first voyage to Port Phillip, about 40 years ago, and his chum and cabin mate on the voyage was Mr O Fenwick, of Flinders lane, who has for many years been an active member of the City Council. Soon after his arrival in Melbourne he secured an engagement in a lawyer's office, but the gold fever claimed him among its many victims, and throwing up his appointment, he set off for the interior, to try his lack with the thousands who were then thronging to Bendigo. Here, however, fortune was not too kind to him, aud after experiencing the usual vicissitudes of the time, he returned to the life of the city with its less exciting but more stable occupations. He received an engagement with the legal firm of Bennett and Taylor, of Collins street, as conveyancer, and soon after started practice with
his brother Edward, with whom he remained in partnership for some time. About sixteen years ago the legal firm of Gillott, Croker and Snowden was formed and was attended with eminent success, until its dissolution last year, when Mr Snowden be came the head of the firm of Snowden, Neave and Demain, solicitors, of Little Collins street.
Sir Arthur Snowden married Miss Jarvis, daughter of the late well-known City contractor of that name. There were three children of the marriage, a son, now deceased, and two daughters, both of whom are married. One is the wife of Mr Rennick, solicitor, and the other the wife of Mr Demaine, Sir Arthur's junior partner. Arthur Snowden13
  • 10 Dec 1897: DEATH OF COUNCILLOR FENWICK.
We regret to announce the death of Councillor Orlando Fenwick, who for many years carried on business as a warehouseman in King-street, and subsequently in Flinders-lane. The deceased gentleman, who had been in ill-health for some weeks, died at his residence, Burwood, yesterday. He was born at Gravesend, England, in 1822, and came to Melbourne in 1852. He was elected a member of the City Council, and continued to hold a seat in the corporation till his death. He occupied the position of Mayor of Melbourne in 1871-72, and was for many years one of the most prominent members of the council. The funeral will leave St Paul's Cathedral for the Melbourne General Cemetery at noon today.
Ex-councillor Charles Smith will be a candidate for the seat in the City Council rendered vacant by Mr Fenwick's death.14
