  • 25 May 1929: DEATH OF Mr. J. PATERSON. With the passing away of one of the old Carlton identities, Mr. James Paterson, the Lygon-street club has lost a member whose demise will be sincerely felt. Mr. Paterson, who died on Wednesday, was a much respected guide, philosopher and friend, and his valued advice on all matters pertaining to his sporting or the social aspects of the game and the club was always at the disposal of those requiring it. A large attendance of club members was present at his funeral at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton.13
  • 27 May 1929: Mr. James Paterson, of “Dalmeny,” Queensberry Street, Carlton, died a his residence on Thursday and was buried on Friday afternoon in the Melbourne Cemetery. Mr. Paterson was a member of a widely known family of artists. With the late Mr. Hugh Paterson, father of Mrs. Geo. Gill (Miss Esther Paterson), and Mrs Newman (Miss Betty Paterson), he carried on business for many years as a decorative artist, but had retired for some time. He was also a brother of the late Mr. John Ford Paterson, a prominent Australian artist, and an uncle of Mr. Louis Esson, the Australian writer, and of the late Mr. F. Brown, formerly of “The Sporting Globe.” He was a bachelor. A sister is Mrs. Gibbs, of Shepparton. Mr. Paterson was a highly skilled draughts player, and won the first draughts championship of Australasia. He was a leading member of the Carlton Bowling Club, which was represented at the funeral.14
