  • 17 Apr 1954: Three die; Easter road toll soars
THREE people have been killed already and nearly 50 injured in Easter road accidents in Victoria, and two have been drowned.

  • 30 Jun 1954: Beaconsfield Man Dies 10 Wks. After Accident
TEN WEEKS after he was knocked down by a car in Frankston Rd. and just when he was apparently well on the way to recovery, Mr. Edward Whitehead, well-known Beaconsfield resident, had a sudden relapse last week and passed away on Sunday. The end came at his home in Adamson Rd., Beaconsfield.
Before coming to Beaconsfield 19 years ago Mr. Whitehead was a member of the Police Force for some 28 years. His last station was at Malvern, where he was for 11 years. He resided with his family on a small farm at Beaconsfield for 19 years and was highly esteemed throughout the district. All share the sorrow of his bereaved wife and two sons, Geoff and Jack.20

  • Abt 1995: A piece of our past saved for the future
The morning sun has shone on a dilapidated old house on a hill beside Cardinia Creek in Berwick for nearly 100 years. Nearby, a free-standing loo could blow over any time in a strong breeze, and a rotting milking shed has seen better days. Giant conifers still enclose a shady, peaceful back yard by the house, where probably an old farmer rested often from a hard day's work.
It all could have seemed irrelevant to the new owner, Haileybury College, who after protracted negotiations early this year bought the property - 52 acres of the old Whitehead farm - adding to the school's original purchase of 16 acres of the former Edrington estate owned by Lord and Lady Casey.
The land extends Haileybury's holdings along the creek for future generations of school boys. But in an interesting development, the school council has decided that a little piece of Berwick's past has a place in the future, and on inspecting the old farmhouse has found treasure which could be put to good use.
The school has saved the house and renovated it over recent months, and the building and grounds supervisor, Rob Frost, liked it so much he has decided to live there with his wife, Cathy.
"The place looked to be in a terrible state,'' secretary of the school council, Dr Ian Thompson, explained. "But we realised the house was very solid."
"The building was square after all those years, and well put together," headmaster John Twist said. "It had stood there for so long it was a shame to knock it down."
Rob and groundsman Peter Long peeled back decades of dirt from the timber walls and floor, added a new kitchen and bathroom, replaced the roof and spruced up the exterior to turn the shack into a sparkling cottage.
The former owner is said to have bred Rottweilers and repaired Volkswagens by candlelight. But the remains of his hobbies have been cleared away and neat grass planted around the house. The only access to the property previously was across the railway line close to Beaconsfield township, which presented a logistical problem for Haileybury.
    ORIGINAL SETTLERS
The original settlers were the Adamson family who were market gardeners. They grew barley, potatoes and wheat. In fact the name Berwick means barley farm ("ber" meaning barley ancl "wick" meaning farm). Later, sheep and cattle grazed on the sunny slopes, and today cattle are agisted there.
The Whitehead family owned the property since the 1930s and this was one of two houses on their farm. Police Superintendent Whitehead may be a familiar name to some early Berwick residents.
Haileybury took possession in May this year with the idea of using the large shed for storage of maintenance equipment.
Eventually the school will build a playing field on the flood plain below and the grass where cattle once grazed will ring with the laughter of children.
The boys are well aware of the area's rich history. Already they have snared brown trout and eels in the creek, just as the Aborigines of the Bunnurong tribe caught blackfish and mussels for thousands of years.
Through their environmental studies they have also learned that until Ash Wednesday 1983 the area was habitat for Australia's rarest bird, the Helmeted Honeyeater, and there are hopes that a small colony which survives further into the hills will eventually make its way back.
Dr Thompson, Mr Twist and the school bursar Mr Brian Hardy look pleased as they survey the 52 acres and think about its potential; and they are particularly proud of the bright little cottage that has been so carefully restored.
At first they debated whether to demolish it - clearly the easiest, cheapest option - but now they are not sorry they took on the more challenging task of saving it.
The project is a significant moment in the six-year-old campus which started with about 40 boys and now has 180.22
