    The undermentioned valuable Blocks of land :—
    Lot 1—312 acres, adjoining the property of Mr J. S. White, and near that of Mr O Connor, being described as Portion 60, Parish of Cranbourne.
    It is moderately timbered, has the advantage of a long frontage to the Kardinia Creek, and is well adapted either for the plough or for grazing purposes.
    Lot 2 has an area of 414 acres, is situated a little to the south of Lot 1, and described as Portion 62, parish of Cranbourne. The soil is exccedingly good, undulating, and lightly timbered.
    For a farm or cattle-raising station it is all that could be desired. The property is all fenced, and has erected thereon a good weatherboard house of three rooms, and scullery, outhouses &c.
    The entire property being only 27 miles from town and three miles from Berwick station must commend. It to the favorable notice of intending farmers, as a splendid market is thereby opened up for every description of produce, grain, butter, cheese, meat animals, horses, &c. Before very long it may safely be predicted that Berwick itself will become the centre of a most important and populous district. The Pakenham Ranges will all be covered with the residences of well-to-do townspeople, who will leave their families as much as possible to the enjoyment of the bracing air and picturesque views of this district whilst the breadwinners pursue their necessary avocations in the metropolis. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that land at Berwick laid out in a large number of half-acre allotments, should have been eagerly bought up at the rate of £100 an acre only a few weeks ago. This speaks volumes both for the soundness of the district and the confidence of the people themselves in their neighbourhood.
    Terms— One-third cash, and balance at four, eight, and twelve months, bearing 7 per cent interest. Solicitor, Verney Cameron, Esq., 32 Collins street east.
    N.B. — It may be mentioned that lot 2 was sold some time ago, but the title being considered defective the sale was cancelled. Since then, however, all difficulties have been removed by the property being brought under the operation of the new Act, and therefore purchasers will now obtain for Title, Real Property Certificate.12

Smith, seconded by Alderman Gatehouse, it was decided that a suitable letter of condolence should be forwarded to the widow of the deceased gentleman.14

  • 1 Dec 1891: HEINECKE AND FOX LIMITED (IN LIQUIDATION).
    The second annual progress statement by Messrs Henry Henty and Jules Renard, liquidators, of the tobacco manufacturing business of Heinecke and Fox limited (in liquidation) was made yesterday at a meeting of shareholders held at the office of the company, Spencer street. Mr Jules Renard occupied the chair.
    The CHAIRMAN reported that a large quantity of unsaleable leaf had been transformed into good and saleable stock. They had now in their own bond tobacco which after making full allowance for expenses of sale, terms and trade allowances, they estimated to be worth £4,412 making with what was held bs the bank £5,651. The realisation of this stock would require at least seven months. There remained in the factory unwrought stock to the value of £1,768. The total amount of leaf would probably realise £4,500, but in order to get this in about £1,600 would have to be spent in rent and wages. The liquidators feared that it might be necessary to call up the remainder of the shares but would make every effort to realise the available assets and avoid the call.
    The statement was adopted, and the meeting then closed.12

  • 21 Aug 1907: DEATH OF MR. J. W. SUTTON.
    A long record of faithful service came to a close on Monday night with the death of Mr Mr John William Sutton, who for many years held successive responsible positions in "The Argus" office. Mr Sutton, who was 83 years of age, died at 86 Wellington parade, East Melbourne where he had been residing for some time.
    With the exception of three years spent on the goldfields in the early fifties the whole of Mr Sutton's career in Victoria was devoted to the service of the proprietors of "The Argus". He left England for Adelaide with his parents in 1839. The voyage was eventful, and was for him an extremely sad one, for both his parents died.
    At 14 years of age and with a young sister to support, the boy landed in Adelaide practically friendless. Thrown upon his own resources, he faced the position with that determination which was one of the factors in his attaining the positions subsequently occupied by him. He lost no time in obtaining employment. He served as an apprentice to the trade of compositor, and after several years' steady work he scored a position in "The Argus" office in 1851. There were then 12 men in the office and of these Mr Sutton was one of the last three survivors. He remained only a few months on "The Argus" being attracted to the diggings with many others who sought their fortunes in that direction. After spending three years on the goldfields Mr Sutton came back to Melbourne and rejoined "The Argus" as a clerk.
    In the course of time he rose to the position of accountant and held it for many years. Not only was he valued by two generations of proprietors for the conscientious and thorough manner in which he carried out his duties, but his personal qualities were such as to endear him to all associated with him in his work. He took a leading part in all movements of a social character originating in the office, and the affection in which he was held was based largely on the unostentatious cordiality which characterised his relations towards those who were brought frequently into contact with him.
    He was for long not only the doyen of his department, but was also one of the most familiar figures in the office. It falls to the lot of few men to remain in one employment for more than half a century. Mr Sutton's record extended over 53 years. When, owing to increasing years, he found himself unable to discharge the duties of accountant, he was appointed auditor, and this office, combined with that of secretary to the trustees of the Edward Wilson estate (which he had held for some years) occupied him until within a few weeks ago. For the greater part of his life he enjoyed very good health, but about two years ago became conscious of growing weakness inseparable from age. He was in town last month, but could not face the cold of the winter days and was forced to remain indoors. He gradually sank, until as we have said he died on Monday night.
    Mr Sutton,during his long career in "The Argus" office, met thousands of persons in connection with the business of his department and won their esteem by his unvarying urbanity. All subscriptions raised for public or charitable purposes in answer to appeals in these columns were under his charge, and an immense amount of money passed through his hands in connection with them. His death deprives the proprietors of loyal and highly valued officer, while the staffs of "The Argus" and "The Australasian" feel deeply the loss of a well beloved colleague.
    The degree of estimation in which he was held was shown by a presentation made to him by the whole establishment in 1904 when he completed his 80th year. He married Miss Elizabeth Frances O'Hea who survives him as well as the following family:- Dr C S Sutton of Carlton, Mr Edward Sutton of the Titles Office, Mr Reginald Sutton of Carlton, Mr James Sutton, South Africa, Mrs Bodevin, South Africa and Miss Sutton who is living in Melbourne.13

  • 19 Feb 1925: Mr. Matthew Henry Legge, who died several days ago, was probably the oldest dentist in active practice in Australia. He arrived about 50 years ago in the sailing vessel Winifred as ship's doctor, and had been engaged in his profession ever since, being supported during the last few years by his son-in-law and partner, Mr. L. R. de Beer. He brought the first dental chair and engine to Melbourne. His widow, who is a daughter of the late Mr. Jules Renard, for many years consul for Belgium here, and daughter, survive him.8

    Mr Glenelg H. Officer, 72, a member of the Australian pastoral family, has died at Parramatta, New South Wales.
    He was the son of the late Mr Robert Officer, widely known in Victoria, and a grandson of the late Sir Robert Officer, of Hallgreen, New Norfolk, Tasmania.
    Mr Officer was born in Victoria, and for many years owned Kergunyah sheep station at Cobar, N.S.W. He was also a director of the Paroo Pastoral Co., of Queensland, but had lived in retirement for some time. He is survived by three daughters and a son.
    Mr Frank Officer, of Officer and Smith, Collins Street, is a brother.5
