  • 8 Apr 1868: At the City Police Court yesterday, a person named Elias Jeffery was summoned for the maintenance of three of his children, at present inmates of the Yarra Bend. The proceedings were taken at the instance of the Master in Lunacy, under the new Lunacy Act, which gives the bench power to make parents contribute, according to their means, to the maintenance of their children under such circumstances. An order was made against the prisoner last October to contribute towards the support of the children, but this he had never complied with. Mrs Elizabeth Jeffey, the step-mother of the children, swore that her husband was in a position to pay, and the bench made an order for the payment of £32 8s., being arrears due from the 1st of October until the 1st of April ; and, further, for the payment of 24s a week, for twelve months ; the defendant to find one surety of £100 for the due carrying out of the order. Newspaper-Articles

  • 9 Jul 1879: OBITUARY. SIR ROBERT OFFICER, KNT.
We regret to find from our Hobart Town telegram that Sir Robert Officer died at 2 p.m. yesterday, at his residence, Halt Green, New Norfolk, aged nearly 80 years. Sir Robert Officer arrived in this colony about 1825 as assistant surgeon to the General Hospital, under the Imperial Government. On his retirement from that position his practice became very extensive and lucrative, but eventually he retired altogether from practice. He represented Glenorchy in the House of Assembly for many years, and after the decease of Sir Richard Dry in 1869 was unanimously elected Speaker. His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, when he visited this colony in 1868, honored Dr. Officer by paying a visit to him at his seat, Halt Green, New Norfolk, and Dr. Officer accompanied the Royal visitor on his inspection of the Salmon Ponds. A few years afterwards the honor of knighthood was conferred upon the Hon. Dr. Officer for his services as Speaker. He was member of the Royal College of Surgeons, England, since 1821; stood second on the roll of the magistracy, having been in the Commistion of the Peace since 12th July, 1828. Sir Robert took a leading part in all movements for the improvement of the colony, socially, morally, and materially. He was President of the Court of Medical Examiners; President of Commissioners for the Hospital for the Insane at New Norfolk; Chairman of Trustees of the Acclimatisation Society; Chairman of the Salmon Commission, and one of the most energetic members of all these associations. He had been a member of the Board of Education, but retired from this and some other pubic offices, when, in consequence of ill health, he resigned his seat for Glenorchy and his position as Speaker, and was succeeded by the Hon. Dr Butler, the Hon. Alfred Dobson replacing him as member for Glenorchy. Sir Robert Officer invested largely in land in Victoria, and established his sons there, where they are known as wealthy and highly respected landowners. Though one of our leading public men for so many years, Sir Robert Officer was of a retiring and modest disposition.
He never identified himself with any political party, but exerted all his energies to his adopted country. In this respect he set an example which all true patriots would do well to follow. As Speaker of the House of Assembly his ruling and decisions were so truly impartial as to ensure the respect and support of all parties. In private life he was social, generously hospitable, and of a most amiable disposition. Amongst the long roll of worthy old colonists who have been called away from amongst us during the last dozen years, we cannot call of memory one more worthy of the regret of the community he endeavored throughout his long and useful life to benefit than Sir Robert Officer.4
  • 9 Jul 1879: SIR ROBERT OFFICER.—Death yesterday removed one whose name has been a household word in Tasmania for upwards of half a century. At the ripe old age of 79, and in possession of his faculties to almost the last moment, has passed away the hon. Sir Robert Officer, than whom no public man ever enjoyed greater confidence. We shall have something more to say of one who perfectly possessed the characteristics conveyed in that grand old word a gentleman.5
