  • 6 Jun 1955: ROAD TERROR: 9 DIE AT WEEKEND
NINE people were killed on Saturday and yesterday in the blackest weekend on Victorian roads for months.
Near Dandenong a woman was killed and nine other people injured when three cars collided with terrific force after one struck a cyclist and swerved across the Princes highway on Saturday night.
Mrs. Ruth Lloyd, 38, of Clyde rd., Berwick, the woman killed, was driving two aunts to the Dandenong pictures when another car slewed across the road head on into her car, after swerving in a vain bid to avoid a boy cyclist.
A following utility pounded into the driving side of Mrs. Lloyd's car, 50 yards on the Dandenong side of the Eummemerring Creek bridge. Not one person escaped injury — except the cyclist, David Abrehart, 12, of Doveton st., Dandenong, who was thrown clear from his wrecked bike.
Police and ambulance men working to extricate the victims had to scatter, when another car swept through the narrow gap between the wrecks at an estimated 70 m.p.h.
Other traffic on the highway was blocked for half an hour before truck crews were able to clear the road.
Rescuers used crowbars to free Harold Tennant, of Strezlecki, who was pinned under the dashboard of the first car for almost 30 minutes.
Two ambulances rushed the victims to the Alfred Hospital. Mrs. Lloyd's aunts, Miss Margaret Cleland, of McPherson st, Carlton (serious abdominal injuries) and Miss Olive Swalling same address (shock and abrasions), were both admitted.
Other victims treated for shock and abrasions were: Charles Albert Richards, 34, of Strezlecki, driver of the first car; Harold Tennant, of Strezlecki; Francis Ridd, of Westgarth st., Northcote; Douglas James Dickson, of Strezlecki; Frederick Crane, of Moon st., Clifton Hill; Colin Copeland McDonald, 34, Frankston rd., Dandenong, utility driver; and James Murphy, of Edith st., Dandenong.10
  • 14 Oct 1955: "Optical illusion," coroner told. DEATH LURKS ON BRIDGE AT NIGHTFALL.
An "optical illusion" may be the cause of a mysterious series of car crashes on Princes Highway near Eumemmerring Creek, near Dandenong.
Constable Derek Dobert told Mr. Burke, S.M., City Coroner, at an inquest yesterday, that in four years there had been at least 12 accidents near the bridge—three of them fatal.
"There is some mysterious reason for them," he said.
"They have nearly all been head-on collisions.
The road is straight and the bridge is the same width as the bitumen road.
"But gravel strips on each side of the road stop where the bridge begins.
"At night this seems to create an optical illusion that the bridge is narrower than the road, and vehicles tend to drift into the centre of the road.
"There is no warning sign," he, said.
The Coroner said: "There seems to be some sort of danger lurking near this bridge and some notice should he placed there."
The Coroner was hearing an inquest on the 38-year old mother of four children who was killed there on June 4 in a three-car crash. Ten other people, including a boy, were injured.
The woman was Mrs. Annie Ruth Lloyd, of Berwick. The Coroner returned a verdict of death by misadventure.
Mrs. Lloyd was driving friends to the movies when her car was hit from two directions.
Her car was flrst hit head on hy a car overtaking a cyclist and then ran into from behind by another car.
    "Grave-risk"
The cyclist, 13-year-old James David Abrehart, of Doveton ave., Dandenong, was told by the Coroner: "You run a grave risk riding at night until you get a better light."
The Coroner said that Charles Albert Richards, a farmer of Strezlecki, was partly to blame for the woman's death. He should have been more careful.
Richards said he had to swerve violently to avoid the cyclist because he did not see him until the last moment.
"I saw the car coming towards me and thought I had time to get through. I jammed on my brakes and was almost at a dead stop at the time of the impact."
The Country Roads Board told The Argus last night that Eumemmerring Creek Bridge would be widened this year.11
