  • 22 Dec 1900: TRAGEDY IN THE EXHIBITION DOME. JAMES SHERRARD'S DEATH, ACCOUNTS PERFECTLY CORRECT. The circumstances surrounding the tragedy in the Exhibition Building on Tuesday, when the body of James Egerton Sherrard, the well - known and popular secretary to the Exhibition trustees, was found hanging from an iron ladder in the dome of the big building, were investigated on Wednesday by Mr Candler and a jury at the Exhibition Building.
Stanley Nugent Lynch, blacksmith, of Learmonth, said that he was in the building on Tuesday afternoon about half-past three, and on going up into the dome he saw the body of a man hanging to the ladder. The body was suspended by the neck by means of a wire rope. Witness did not touch the body, but at once went below and gave information to the caretaker. There was no movement in the body, which was just swayed by the wind.
Robert Duff, caretaker of the Exhibition, said that on Tuesday afternoon he was informed by the last witness that a man was hanging in the dome. Witness went up with his informant, and found the body of the late secretary, Mr Sherrard, hanging by the neck. Witness felt the deceased's hands, and found them cold, and the body was quite rigid. Witness then returned below, and informed the acting secretary of what had occurred. Witness went for a doctor but did not at first find one.
Afterwards witness went up, and with assistance cut the body down, and brought it below. Witness had not seen deceased alive yesterday. Witness then described how the body was hanging, and how the wire rope was fixed. There were no indications of a struggle, and the drop did not seem to have been more than nine inches or a foot. There was a delay in communicating with the police through a misunderstanding as to who should do it. Deceased had not seemed himself of late. Witness, how ever, thought deceased had been drinking lately. He seemed different the last week or ten days. Witness knew of nothing except the drinking bout to lead deceased to commit suicide.
Richard Bell, assistant caretaker at the Exhibition, said that he assisted the last witness in cutting down and removing the body of the deceased. Witness saw him alive at ten o'clock on Tuesday morning, when he seemed all right. Constable Stevens, of Carlton, described the appearance of the body as he saw it. The neck was deeply indented by the wire rope. In one of the pockets witness found a watch, in another a steel chain, a pocket book and some other articles. The face of deceased was slightly discolored. The feet of deceased were not arched nor the hands clenched, and, as far as witness knew, there were no in dications of death from strychnine poison ing. There has been no chemist at the address given on the bottle for the last fifteen years.
William Henry Sherrard, civil servant, said that he was a brother of the deceased, whose age was forty-five years. Witness last saw him alive at his (witness's) house last Friday evening. His mental condition was bad, and he had evidently been drinking. Deceased asked witness the time on that occasion, and witness replied "Half-past seven," where upon deceased asked whether it was morning or evening. Witness believed that deceased was getting on towards delirium tremens. Witness knew of no adequate cause to induce deceased to take his life. He had no trouble in the world that witness knew of. A few years ago deceased had had drinking bouts. Deceased was in no financial difficulty, so far as witness knew.
Dr Lewis[sic] Laurence Smith, chairman of the Exhibition trustees, had had a great deal to do with deceased as secretary of the trustees. At times Mr Sherrard had broken out into drinking bouts, and witness, who had known him for 18 years, and loved him very much, had told him that he was certain that he had an alcoholic disease of the brain. The accounts of the Exhibition, which were in the deceased's hand, had been examined, and found perfectly correct. Deceased had told witness that he thought he would commit suicide some time while insane. Deceased was sensitive—in fact, he was a perfect gentleman in the truest sense of the word.
The jury returned a verdict of suicide whilst of unsound mind.11
  • 2 Feb 1901: The National Trustees' Company is applying for probate of the will of James Egerton Sherrard, deceased, late secretary to the Exhibition Trustees, who died on the 17th ult., leaving estate valued at £2242 18/5, being realty £1044 and personalty £598 18/5, the whole of which he bequeath ed to his widow.12
