  • 1 May 1941: Requiescant In Pace. MRS. BASIL SENNETT.
There was general expression of regret when news was received of the unexpected death, on March 17, of Mrs. Basil Sennett, of Beaconsfield. The deceased lady, a native of Ireland, went to Beaconsfield with her husband several years ago to engage in business.
She was of a bright disposition, and her unfailing cheerfulness won her many friends, and her death at a comparatively young age stirred the community in which she won so much respect. She always put the eternal before the temporal, and so was ever faithful to her religious duties as a parishioner of St. Michael's Church, Berwick, where her body was brought prior to its interment in the Geelong Cemetery. It was thought more than a coincidence that one who was so passionately fond of the land of her birth should have died on the feast of that "dear isle of Erin's patron saint—St. Patrick". Rev. Fr. Little reminded the congregation who attended the Requiem Mass at Berwick, to remember in their prayers the soul of the late Mrs. Sennett. Mr. Basil Sennett, who displayed an edifying spirit of resignation to his great loss, was the recipient of much sympathy. Mrs. Sennett leaves a brother and a sister (Mrs. Brennan), both of Geelong, to mourn their loss. The high appreciation felt for the deceased was the tribute paid to her memory by the action of Right Rev. Mgr. Benson, of St, Mary's, Geelong, who performed the last rites at the graveside.

Newspaper-Articles

  • 16 Aug 1890: Serious Illness of Mr Jas. Sennett.
    — The numerous friends in these districts will sincerely regret to learn of the serious illness of Mr Jas. Sennett, formerly postmaster at Beechworth, and now of Fitzroy, to which office he was a few months ago transferred. A telegram was on Monday morning received by the Rev. J. A. Osborne from Mrs Sennett, intimating that her husband was dying, and a report was also circulated that he was dead, though inquiry late in the evening proved that such was not the case. The cause of illness is that dread malady, cancer. The latest telegram read; —"Mr Sennett breathing his last."5
  • 16 Aug 1890: He feelingly alluded to the serious illness of Mr Jas. Sennett, the late president of the institution, and referred to him as a man of sterling Christian character.6
  • 21 Aug 1890: In a recent issue of the Ovens and Murray Advertiser reference is made to the death of Mr James Sennett, for many years postmaster at Beechworth, and eldest son of Mr R. H. Sennett, of Geelong. The sad event, which occurred at Fitzroy, on Sunday, was not unexpected, as for some weeks past the deceased had been seriously ill, suffering from a nervous complaint which brought on brain fever, supervening a severe attack of influenza, which had the effect of weakening the system to such a degree as to render his recovery an impossibility, death being in the latter part of last week hourly anticipated. The late Mr Sennett was a most useful member of the community, and his death is much regretted. Born on the 12th of February, 1849, the date of his first appointment in the Government service was 1st September, 1866, and a short time after that year he was one of the junior employes in the Beechworth Post Office.
He was postmaster, consecutively, at Wodonga, Wood's Point, Wangaratta, Beechworth and Fitzroy. Just prior to his demise he was prevailed upon by his friends to send in his resignation, and his widow will thus be entitled to claim compensation calculated at the rate of one month's salary for each year of service.1
