    Sir,—Referring to the letter by "Decency" on Saturday, and, after making searching inquiries amongst shopkeepers and residents of Beaconsfield, I find, as far as our local young men are concerned that there is absolutely no truth in the statement that they had misconducted themselves in the main street or anywhere else. Constable McDonald of Berwick is very attentive to his duties which can be done without as far as Beaconsfield is concerned. A dance was held on the night referred to by "Decency," which finished at midnight and all went home quietly. If there was any riotous behaviour it was caused by strangers passing on the main Princes Highway through our prosperous little town. Yours, &c.,

    Sixty-three men applied for the hairdressing saloon of Mr John T. Garth, hairdresser, of Beaconsfield. Mr T. McLachlan, of Murrumbeena Road, Murrumbeena, was accepted, and has been in charge of the shop since Thursday.
    On July 26 Mr Garth, through The Herald, offered his saloon at Beaconsfield to any unemployed hairdresser who might like to take charge of it.
    Because of ill-health he was unable to carry on the business himself, and the successful applicant could have the saloon takings, rent and electric light free.
    Mrs Garth said today that the applications had come from all parts of Victoria, as well as from New South Wales. Before going to the shop, Mr McLachlan had been out of work for six months.
    Mr Garth was seriously ill, and probably would not resume business, so Mr McLachlan could stay there as long as he liked, rent free.20
