    The wedding of Mr. John W. Payne, eldest son of Mr. John Payne, of "Rathmore," Kew, and Miss Elsie Carse, second daughter of Mr. Edmund Carse, of "Merlyn," Albert Park, was celebrated on 9th March at St. Silas' Church by the Rev. A. B. Rowed. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore white crepe de chine over taffeta, trimmed with tucked chiffon, silk applique, and tas sels. Her bouquet was of white roses and tiger lilies. The bridesmaids were the Misses Carse and Payne. They wore cream frocks trimmed with fine lace, and carried pale pink roses. The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a gold muff chain, and to the bridesmaids gold cable bangles. Mr. W. Payne, brother of the bride groom, was best man, and Mr. H. Grenfell was groomsman. After the ceremony the guests were entertained at the residence of the bride's parents. The honeymoon was spent at the Blue Mountains. The travelling dress was a mole costume, and smart amethyst hat.   • 18 Aug 1939: OBITUARY MR. J. W. PAYNE Deep regret was felt throughout the district this week when it was learned that Mr. J. W. Payne, of Merrie Park, Beveridge, had passed away. Mr. Payne was popular among a large circle of friends and it came as a great shock to them to hear of his death at the comparatively early age of 53 years. Born at Hawthorn in 1886, Mr. John William Payne was the son of Mr. John Payne, the founder of Payne's Bon Marche, in Bourke street, but the land exerted a strong call and eventually he took up farming at Beaconsfield. In 1915 he moved to the property at Beveridge, where he remained until his death. Mr. Payne is survived by a widow, two sons (Messrs. John William and Ted Payne) and a daughter, Elsie Jean (Mrs. L. McArthur Smith, of Yan Yean) and two grandchildren. The burial took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Fawkner Cemetery, the funeral being largely attended. The principal mourners were the sons and deceased's brother (Messrs. William and Norman Smith). The pall bearers were-Messrs. A. Cameron, J. Sherwin, J. Bunting, L. Congram, J. Towt, R. R. Kerr, J. N. Kerr and J. Jordan. The service was conducted by the Rev. W. G. Vizard, of Whittlesea.26
