    Great interest was taken in the event, as both the bride and the bridegroom are so well known and universally liked, and it was the first wedding ceremony to be performed in the local public hall, which was beautifully decorated by the numerous girl friends of the bride, who worked under the supervision, of Mrs. James Wilson. The officiating clergyman was the congregational minister, the Rev. James Wilson.
    The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. H. T. M. Fowler, looked charming in a dainty gown of ivory supple satin, with over dress of Limerick lace, the bodice and draped tunic being appliqued with silk flowers and small pearls. The tulle veil, simply bordered, was caught back with clusters of orange blossom and heather, and a shower bouquet of white flowers and asparagus fern was carried.
    The bride's sister, Miss N. Fowler, was bridesmaid, and wore a very becoming gown of pale blue crepe de chine, relieved by a slight trimming of black velvet. The bridegroom's brother, Mr. B. Anderson, was best man. As the wedding party were leaving the hall the organist, Miss Dora Stenhouse, played Mendelssohn's Wedding March.
    After the ceremony Mrs. and Miss Fowler held a reception at "Salisbury House," when Mr. and Mrs. Anderson received the congratulations of their many friends, after which wedding tea was partaken of.
    Mr. and Mrs. Anderson left by the afternoon train for Melbourne, en route to Mentone for the honeymoon.
    The bride's travelling dress was a smart grey tailor-made coat and skirt costume, the hat being black panne with a white mount. Two little girls, Bridie Stenhouse and Jean Martin, strewed rose-leaves in the path of the bride as she left the hall and again as she left on the honeymoon trip. An enjoyable dance was held in the evening.

    The wedding of Mr. Francis E. Wilson, A.I.F., only son of the Rev. James Wilson, of Upper Beaconsfield, and Miss Ida Holt, youngest daughter of Mr. John Oakes Holt, of "Cam Brea," East St. Kilda, was celebrated on Saturday evening, 18th September, at the Balaclava Methodist Church. The church had been artistically decorated with masses of lilies and palms, whilst sheaths of the lovely blooms were set on the end of each pew. Suitable music was rendered, including the Wedding March from Lohengrin and the "Voice that Breathed o'er Eden." The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a beautiful frock of ivory crepe satin, with a pinafore overdress of lace, finished with tiny ninon roses. The court train of ivory satin was brocaded in velvet roses and her Limerick lace veil was arranged cap fashion into a wreath of orange blossom. The Early Victorian posy was of choice white blooms frilled and tied with tulle. The trainbearer was Miss N. Latham, who wore a dainty pale pink satin frock finished with ninon roses. A wreath of roses was worn in the hair and a posy of pink carnations carried. The Misses Louie Holt (sister) and Una Wilson (sister), who were the bridesmaids, were frocked alike in pale flame pink satin, the full overskirts of ninon banded with satin. The bodices of hand-worked lace were veiled with ninon, and they wore striking hats of flame pink tulle tied with black velvet streamers. Their posies were of pink carnations and roses tied and frilled with tulle. Mr. Wilfred Natrass was best man and Mr. Fred Holt groomsman.
    After the ceremony, the guests motored to the Wickliffe Cafe, on the Esplanade, where a reception and wedding tea was held. The tables were prettily decorated with pink tulle and blossom. The bride's mother received in black satin veiled with lovely lace, the bodice was of ninon and lace. A smart black and white hat was also worn and a bouquet of purple pansies and velvet streamers was carried. The bridegroom's mother was gowned in mauve crepe de chine, one of the new full skirts being worn with an Eton coatee. Her becoming black hat was modelled of tulle. Subsequently, Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Wilson motored to Mornington for their honeymoon. The bride travelled in a dainty grey crepe de chine and small grey hat. Many handsome presents were received including a cheque from Moran and Cato, to which firm the bridegroom is analytical chemist. Amongst the guests were—Dr. and Mrs. Brooke Nichols, Mr. Henry Baker and Miss M. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. James Dyer, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Cronin, Mr. and Mrs. Mattingley, Mr. and Mrs. D. Le Souef.   • 9 Apr 1923: MARRIED WOMAN'S DEATH. Leaving her mother and a nurse with whom she had motored to the city on Friday afternoon, Mrs. Ida Wilson, aged 33 years, returned to her home at 104 Hotham street, East St. Kilda, alone. Shortly afterwards she handed to her sister a bottle believed to have contained cyanide, saying "I have done it now." A doctor was summoned, but Mrs. Wilson who had been unwell for some time, and recently underwent an operation, was unconscious on his arrival and died soon afterwards. The body was removed to the morgue.8

  • 18 Aug 1875: Mr. Thomas Colles, solicitor, has been appointed a commissioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales for taking affidavits.12
  • 21 Oct 1929: The death occurred on Friday of Mr. Thomas Colles, one of the oldest solicitors in Melbourne, in his 81st year. He was a member of the well-known legal firm of Wilkie and Colles. In his young days Mr. Colles, was a noted oarsman and rowed ... university race between Melbourne and Sydney in 1870. The other members of the crew were T. C. Hope, John Guee (now Sir John), and D. Wilkie, stroke. Mr. Colles also rowed in the race in 1871. Melbourne won both races. In 1869 he won the juniors sculls. In 1872 and 1873 he was stroke of the University crew which won the grand challenge senior fours at the Melbourne regatta. He was always a rowing enthusiast, and when in 1919 the late Mr. John Lang produced "The Victorian Oarsman," a record of rowing in Victoria. Mr. Colles wrote an interesting chapter, "Victorian Rowing 50 Years Ago." Mr. Colles's wife, who pre-deceased him by two years, was a daughter of the late Mr. Robert Cuthbertson Hope, of Geelong.13
