Anecdote* | Michael Cannon's book "The Land Boomers" has a four-page article about "Edward Latham the Brewer" :- "Latham, the youngest of four sons, was sent to boarding school at age 5 for 10 years with two of his older brothers on the death of his parents (this may in fact have been an orphanage) At 15 years he joined a large soap-making establishment in Lancashire". According to the "Australian Brewer's Journal" dated 20 Jul, 1905, Edward Latham in 1864 emigrated from Liverpool with a younger brother (Thomas) who had consumption (tuberculosis). The sea trip was supposed to restore his health, but he died the day after they stepped ashore, at age 25.He crossed to Tasmania where he met and married the widowed Bertha Ashton (Atkins), and returned to Melbourne with his bride in 1865, with an introduction to George M. Milne, brother of Hon. Sir William Milne of Adelaide. When John Bellman took over the North Melbourne Brewery he changed the name to the Carlton Brewery, but was not succesful in business. On 9 Aug 1865, the Sherriff's Office auctioned the brewery, horses and equipment, 90 casks of ale and 150 empties. The brewery was purchased by Edward Latham and his partner, George Milne, and the business then began operating on a sound and progressive basis. Milne retired in 1871. Latham built the impressive blue-stone brewery that still stands in Bouverie Street, Carlton and was fortunate enough to secure the services of Alfred Terry, an experienced brewer whos integrity and ability was widely known in the colony. Alfred Terry died in 1881. They began by producing 50 hogsheads of beer per week and gradually increased to 1,200 per week. Latham ran the very succesful business until Jan 1881 when it was floated on the stock exchange. A company called the Melbourne Brewing & Malting Company, was formed. Latham retained the largest interest but making a tidy sum from the sale of of the balance of the shares, and remained the Managing Director until he retired in 1884. Some of the money he made went on a large donation towards the building of St Paul's Cathedral. "He is a man whose individuality is stamped on his face; his open brow, clear, honest eyes, are the outward and visible signs of a good and valiant soul within" He helped establish the first volunteer fire-brigade at the Carlton Brewery, which won competitions against all comers for four years in a row, 1878 till 1881. Latham stood for the seat of Carlton in 1880, for the Legislative Assembly, but without success". Keith Dunstan in his book "The Amber Nectar" writes:- "Latham went to Tasmania, married and returned to Melbourne looking for a business. He spotted an advertisement: 'Sherriff's sale, McGee, V Bellman at 3 o'clock, 9th August 1865. At Carlton Brewery, Bouverie Street, all righrs, etc. In 90 casks of ale, more or less, 150 empty casks, 4 horses and the plant on the premises. P. F. Kavanagh, Sherriff's Officer, Auctioneer". "So Edward Latham found himself a very cheap dilapidated little brewery. Latham went into partnership with G.M. Milne, but quickly took over as sole proprietor. He hired Alfred Terry, who undoubtably was the best brewer in the colony, and output rose from 50 hogsheads a week to five hundred. According to the advertising copy Carlton produced a unique beer. There were secrets known only to Mr. Latham and Mr. Terry which tended 'to make the Carlton Ale what it really is, the most wholesome, the pleasantest and hence the most popular of vintages'. In 1864 Latham built handsome bluestone offices in Bouverie Street, Carlton, which stretched all the way to Victoria Street, except for the little Bush Inn on the corner. The inn came down in 1922 and the present executive offices were built in matching bluestone for a fortune. The main brewery was in Victoria Street and the stables, which were very grand, were over in Ballarat street. They were 80 feet square, 30 feet high and covered with a single span roof. A senior judge walked down Ballarat Street just as the building was approaching completion. He was so impressed he asked the clerk of works, what demoniation the church would be, Anglican?, Catholic?, Methodist? Oh, no, said the workman these were just the stables for the Carlton Brewery. "If anyone could be described as the father of Carlton it would be Edward Latham. It was his business and administrative skills that made the Carlton Brewery a success against frightening competition. In 1884 he was a rich man and he lived in a splendidKew mansion, 'Knowsley'. An imposing gentleman, winged collar, bow-tie neatly clipped beard and moustache and looking a cross between Alfred Deakin & King George the Fifth. He sold out to the Melbourne Brewing and Malting Company, but under the terms of the agreement remained for three years as managing director" About 1880, the architect William Salway designed "Raheen", Studley Park Rd., Kew for Edward Latham, a 38-room Italianate mansion which he sold in 1889 to the then Attorney-general, Sir Henry Wrixon, who in turn sold it in 1917 to the Catholic Church. "Raheen" became the home of Archbishop Daniel Mannix until 1963. Richard Pratt of Visyboard then purchased the home and his widow Jeannie, lives there today (2011). The Lathams shifted to "Knowsley", also in Studley Park Road, Kew. From 1881-83 Latham built a holiday home for 600 pounds, at Queenscliff called "Lathamstowe", an Italianate mansion, which still stands and is now a bed & breakfast establishment. He donated "Lathamstowe" to the Church of England as a convalescent and holiday home for the clergy of the diocese of Melbourne. "Edward Latham was deeply associated with the Baillieus. He represented Queenscliff in the diocese of Melbourne, and Queenscliff was the ancestral home of the Baillieus. In 1887 Latham's 22-year-old daughter made what Michael Cannon described in the 'Land Boomers' as a brilliant marriage. She married William Lawrence Baillieu, a tall good-looking adventurous young banker. That other daring banker, George Meudell, said W.L. Baillieu had an alluring personality and in the palmy days. In 1884 Latham travelled the world, looking at modern brewing methods, with his wife and children, Bertha & Thomas. One reason for the trip was to disuade the attention of William Lawrence Baillieu who was a suitor of Berthas and sailed as a crew man on Latham's yachts the "Hygeia" and the "Bertha", at Queenscliff. Latham was not at first predisposed to him, but later accepted him and as it turned out she later married him with her father's approval. On their return, Latham dabbled in land speculation. "Ainslie" in Studley Park Road was bought in Baillieu's name in Sep 1888, but Latham lived there with his family until at least 1890. In that year "Ainslie" was demolished to make way for the construction of Studley Park Avenue and Latham shifted to 198 Studley Park Road, alongside "Raheen". W.L. Baillieu and his family lived there with the Lathams until they shifted into their own home at Waterloo Street, Camberwell (next to Riversdale Rd Trinity Church). In 1889 Latham was appointed to the board of Federal Bank, founded by James Munro, and which closed in 1893. At the time of its liquidation, overdraft liabilities included a debt of 66,000 pounds to LathamHe bought 87 acres of land at Preston, and sold it to a group consisting of Munro, Baillieu & Fink who formed the "Heart of Preston Land Co.Ltd". They divided the Latham land into blocks, promoted it well and in 1889 made a profit of 33,000 pounds, but it failed with the coming depression. The 1890's, however, were disastrous times for Latham, and he lost his considerable fortune during the depression years through the failure of further land speculation. He was also on the board of the Federal Bank which closed its doors in 1893. He made a secret composition with his creditors for 32,795 pounds and paid a shilling in the pound. Baillieu paid six pence in the pound. My grandmother who visited the Baillieu's & Latham's at Kew said the family were disappointed at the way they had not faced their creditors with more integrity. Less than eight months later, Latham was back in the company flotation business again. On 23 Dec, 1892, he floated Edward Latham & Co.Ltd with 50,000 pounds nominal capital. The purpose was to acquire from J. R. Fryer the "Southern Brewery", situated in Richmond. The other subscribers were Bertha Latham, T.R.Latham, W.L. & Bertha Martha Baillieu. He sold out in 1902 to the Carlton Brewery. A few years later, Latham, Baillieu and others combined several of the surviving breweries into a new company called Carlton & United Breweries Ltd. One by one over subsequent years, the C.U.B. swallowed its competitors with apparent relish. Latham was said to be "a man of unswerving integrity and an ornament to the brewing profession". My grandmother wrote in a letter in 1960:- "Knowsley', Studley Park Road, Kew, Vic. was the home of Mr. & Mrs Edward Latham for many years. Mrs Latham was grandma Nicholson's sister, both daughters of Capt. Atkins, 73rd Rgt. of Foot. Last time we all stayed at "Knowsley" was in May 1889 on the way back to Tasmania from Bairnsdale, Victoria to go to "Kinvarra", Plenty. Mrs Latham's only daughter Bertha married W.L. Baillieu. Their eldest son is Sir Clive Baillieu who lives in England. I saw him as an infant of a few weeks. Carrie L. Milne nee Nicholson."(Notes D.L.M. - Clive Latham Baillieu was born 24 Sep 1889 which means the date above should read May 1890.)1 | |
