Newspaper-Articles

  • 17 Oct 1867: DEATH OF DR. EADES. Richard Eades, M.D., whose name has been connected with many of the principal events in the early times of this colony, and who was known and respected by a large circle of friends, both in public and private life, died about 7 o'clock on Saturday evening at Windsor, where he had removed about two months before for the benefit of his health from the house in Collins-street east, which he had occupied for a number of years. Some time ago he was laid up with jaundice, which turned to dropsy. He was then attended by Drs. Thomas and Robertson, and it was probably at their advice that he changed his abode. He was, however, to be seen in Melbourne frequently until the day of his death, having spent the evening of Friday at the house of a friend in town. His last appearance with the Corporation of Melbourne was at the Mayor's lunch on Wednesday, and he found himself so well on Friday evening that he started to walk part of the way home. On Saturday morning, however, he had a relapse of his illness and in the evening expired as peaceably as he had for some long time lived. -A post mortem examinatiou disclosed the cause of death to be rupture of a bloodvessel in the liver. The deceased gentleman had been paying a visit at Broadmeadeow about a week ago, and on returning he was thrown from the cab by the horse suenddely going forward when he was in the act of alighting. He fell on his shoulder, and afterwards remarked that he was somewhat shaken by the fall. Dr. Eades was educated in Dublin, where he took the degree of bachelor of arts at Trinity College, and afterwards became lecturer on materia medica in that city, a position which he held until leaving for these colonies, which he did in 1848 as doctor of a ship bound for Adelaide. He soon established himself in a good practice in the sister colony, in which he continued to reside till the discovery of gold here became a source of attraction, and he came amongst others. His professional reputation had preceded him, and consequently he fell in with a good practice In this colony, and soon took a position in public affairs. He occupied the position' of honorary physician of the Melbourne Hospital for many years, only resigning it a few months ago. Upon the establishment of a medical school in con nection with the Melbourne University, the office of lecturer on the materia medica, therapeutics, and medical botany was accepted by him, and he was very much liked by many who attended his teachings. In his medical capacity he was health officer of the city of Melboure, since the death of Dr. Macadam, and was also one of the board of visitors of the lunatic asylums. When he resigned his position of alderman in the City Council to take up that of health officer, he had been councillor and alderman for a period of twelve years, representing Latrobe Ward. In the municipal year of 1859-60, Dr. Eades occupied the position of Mayor, and during his term of office the well known disturbance at the Parliament Houses occurred, when the Riot Act had to be read in Melbourne. Those who saw Dr. Eades in this scene state that he went through his part of the business with great firmness, and secured the confidence of the people. He was in his time an active member of the Royal Society, but has not lately done much in connection with the body, and, was also, if not the oldest, one of the oldest surgeons in the Volunteer Force. It is, therefore, expected that he will be buried with military honours. The funeral is to take place on Tuesday. We have received the following brief notice from a warm personal friend of the late Dr. Eades :-" I cannot without a feeling of deep, sorrow acquaint your readers with the death of Richard Eades for many years so well known amongst us. At a not very advanced age, and when his mental faculties were in their full vigor, he has been taken away, and in him one more link which connects the present with the past has been snapped asunder. Dr. Eades, was no ordinary member of a profession which justly claims the title of 'learned.' In his younger years he had the advantage of completing his studies for the medical profession in France, where he spent some years. He was afterwards professor, of medical botany and and therapeutics is Dublin for many years. Eventually he came out with his family to South Australia, and after residing there for some few years, he was induced to take up his abode in Melbourne. In this city his great talents, genial disposition, and devotion to his profession, soon gained him many warm friends in all the best grades of Melbourne society. In course of time he took his full share in the administration of city affairs, was for many years an alderman and magistrate of the city, and for one year Mayor of Melbourne. As a physician in the sick room he had few, if any, superior to him ; and his attention to the sick was greatly enhanced by his amiable disposition and hopeful kindness. In the rarer walks of his profession he had, taken all in all, perhaps no equal. As a popular lectuier he was a master, and many who read this will not need to be reminded of his higher efforts both to please and instruct. Who that has once heard of his many versions of the physiology of laughter, sighing and weeping can ever forget it ! As a lecturer of materia medica and medical botany, there is some reason to fear that we have not among us at present in the profession one capable of filling his place with credit to the medical'school. We may have botanists, who know only a smattering of medical chemistry and chemists who know nothing of medical botany. Gentle amiable, dignified, yet condescending and kind to the humblest, learned without pedantry, and generous almost to a fault, he has lived without an enemy, and will carry with him to his last resting-place the affectionate remembrance of many a heart. The writer of this brief outline, who has known him for very many years and who shared his confidence on several trying occasions, can state with truth that never did his hear him apply a harsh epithet, even to those who had most deeply injured him. Herald, Oct. 14th..8
  • 26 Oct 1867: DEATH OF DR EADES.
It is with unfeigned regret we have to announce the sudden demise of Dr. Eddes, late health officer to the city corporation, a gentleman highly esteemed by the members of the medical profession in this city, and universally respected by all who knew him. The deceased gentleman lectured at the Melbourne University (where he occupied with honor the position of lecturer in Materia Medica), on the 9th inst. On the 11th inst. he visited some parts of Gipp's Ward in his official capacity as health officer, in company with Crs. Walker and Saunders. Although but recently recovered from a severe illness, on those occasions he seemed to enjoy excellent health, and continued so up to the 12th inst., when he complained of spasms. He was attended by Dr. Robertson and other gentlemen of the profession, but expired at his residence, Prahran, about seven o'clock the same evening. He sustained a hurt in the foot through getting a fall in coming out of a cab on the 6th inst. Dr. Eades was for a number of years a member of the City Council, and once occupied the position of mayor. He occupied a very high professional position in his native city, Dublin, and in Adelaide, the first Australian city in which he practised. As a lecturer at the University, his place will not easily be supplied. In accordance with a request expressed by himself before death, a post mortem examination of the body of Dr. Eades was made by Dr. Thomas and Mr Featherston, when it was ascertained that the immediate cause of death was hemorrhage from the liver into the abdomen. The liver was found to be very much diseased.
The remains of Dr. Eddes were interred in the Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral cortege, which consisted of over one hundred carriages, moved from the late residence of the deceased, High-street, Prahran at about two o'clock. The hearse was preceded by Drs. Robertson and Thomas, his medical attendants, and the students at the University. The pall-bearers were the Mayor of Melbourne (Mr Williams, M.L.A.), Mr J. T. Smith, M.L.A., Dr. Brownless, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Halford, Dr. Bleasdale, and Dr. Gilbee, Capt. Steel, Dr. L. L. Smith, Mr Fitzgibbon, Town Clerk, and Mr Masters. All the officers of the Corporation, as well as many of the members of the volunteer corps with which Dr. Eades was connected, were present. The funeral service was performod by the Rev. S. L. Chase. , George Britton Halford, Louis Lawrence Smith, Rev Canon Septimus Lloyd Chase9

Australian Dictionary of Biography

Richard Eades (1809-1867), physician, was born on 15 August 1809 in Dublin, son of William George Eades, wine merchant, and his wife Mary, née Cranwill. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A., 1832; M.B., 1836), and London (M.R.C.S., 1834). In the cholera epidemic of 1832-33 he went to Canada as surgeon of a migrant ship and visited hospitals there, in New York and elsewhere in America. He later went to Paris to study botany and chemistry. Back in Dublin, he lectured on materia medica at the Ledwich School of Medicine in 1838 and in 1842 at the Park Street and the Richmond Hospital Medical Schools; he was also physician to the Fever Hospital, Kilmainham, in 1847-48. He was co-opted a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland on 4 October 1844. With his wife and infant he arrived in South Australia in the Roman Emperor on 23 October 1848. He registered with the Medical Board on 2 January 1849, built up a successful practice in Adelaide as a physician and took a leading part in democratic politics. The discovery of gold prompted his move to Melbourne in January 1852, but he probably did not work on the goldfields.
Apart from his practice Eades was active in public affairs. He helped to found the Philosophical Institute of Victoria in 1855 and was a member of its council in 1858-59 and of the Royal Society of Victoria in 1860-61 and vice-president in 1860. In 1854 he represented La Trobe ward in the Melbourne City Council and was mayor in 1859-60. On 28 August 1860 when large crowds gathered outside Parliament House to demonstrate against inadequacies of a land bill, Eades courageously read the Riot Act; although the demonstrators clashed seriously with the police, no stone was thrown at him. He was physician to the Melbourne Hospital in 1859-66 and official visitor to the Lunatic Asylum in 1856-67. He was appointed city health officer on the death of Dr John Macadam in 1865. An early advocate of the Volunteer Forces, he was assistant surgeon to the Metropolitan Company of Artillery. He was a member of the Burke and Wills Exploration Committee.
In 1861 he lectured on materia medica in the Government Analytical Laboratory and with Macadam began an extra-mural course for medical students. The enterprise of Eades and Macadam, at a time when the university could not obtain funds, undoubtedly hastened the establishment of the Medical School. When it opened in 1862, Eades was appointed lecturer in materia medica and therapeutics, a position he held until 1867. He was highly regarded as a physician, and as a fluent lecturer held the attention and the affection of his students. His fine baritone voice, his extensive repertoire of Irish songs and his wit made him very popular at special dinners. He died at his home in Windsor on 12 October 1867, and was buried with Anglican rites in the Melbourne general cemetery.
Eades married first, in 1843 at Dublin Sarah Christine Beare by whom he had two sons and three daughters, and second, at Melbourne in 1856 Charlotte Eleanor McKee, née Beare, by whom he had one son and three daughters. He was survived by one son and two daughters of the first marriage and by his widow and her four children. His family was left in poor circumstances and a public meeting was held on 20 March 1868 at the Mechanics' Institute to raise funds for their relief.10
