    One of the most extraordinary divorce cases that came before the Victorian Court last year was that of De Goey v. de Goey, in which J. C. de Goey applied for a divorce from his wife, Amy Elizabeth de Goey on the ground of her adultery with Henry Carr, a well-to-do contractor, residing at Brighton. It appeared that the co-respondent was a married man with grown up children. Mr de Goey failed to obtain his divorce, because Mrs Carr came forward and showed "collusion" between the petitioner and the co-respondent, inasmuch as her husband had paid Mr de Goey £1,500 as "compensation" for the loss of his wife.
    The sequel to this remarkable suit came before Mr Justice Williams in the Divorce Court yesterday, when Mrs Mary Anne Carr petitioned for a divorce from her husband, Henry Carr, on the ground of his adultery with Amy Elizabeth de Goey. The petition stated that the petitioner was now 47 years of age and the respondent 50 years. They were married in 1867, and had seven children living, of whom four were grown up.
    Dr. M'Inerney and Mr F J Tucker appeared for the petitioner, and Mr Woolf for the respondent.
    Mr WOOLF said his client admitted the adultery, and desired to be heard merely on the question of alimony.
    Dr M'INERNEY said that the petitioner had made repeated efforts to wean her husband from his infatuation for Mrs de Goey, but they had all failed. In August last, when divorce proceedings were threatened, he made a statutory declaration of his intention to renounce and abandon his acquaintance with Amy Elizabeth de Goey and not to pay any money on her behalf, adding that if he broke his promise his wife was to be at liberty to sue for divorce. The promise was broken, and this suit was the result. The respondent was possessed of considerable property, and the petitioner was entitled to a substantial allowance as alimony.
    The petitioner, in the course of her evidence said that she and her husband lived happily together till five or six years ago, when he became disagreeable towards her, and was often away from home. The first proof she received of his infidelity was a statement by himself in January, 1893. He had been away all the Christmas holiday, and when he came back she was cross. She asked him where he had been spending his time, and he said, "I am living with Mrs de Goey. I have bought her from her husband. She said, "You don't mean de Goey's wife?" He said "Yes." She said, "I know you have been going there a great deal, but I did not dream of this." She thought he was out of his mind - his statement was so incredible. He said, "If you keep quiet for three weeks and don't make any fuss, I shall try to get her husband to take her away." Thinking there was something wrong with his head she promised. He left home again, and she waited for five weeks, seeing him occasionally. At last she demanded to know where he was living, and he said "Don't ask me. The poor devil is dying, and I can't tell you where she is. There's a baby to be born." She then went to Mr de Goey, and then found Mrs de Goey in a house at Hawthorn, with a baby, of which she said the respondent was the father. Next day witness saw her husband. He said, "So you have been to that woman?" She said, " Yes, and I was very much surprised to see her surrounded by such luxuries and my poor children as they are."
    He said, "If you go there again I shall smash you." Witness was told that her husband was then allowing Mrs de Goey £10 a week. The two of them afterwards went to live at Carlton as Mr and Mrs Carr, and then at Fenwick street, Clifton Hill, where he bought her a cottage for £550 and made her a present of it. When witness commenced divorce proceedings last year the respondent made the statutory declaration already referred to. He afterwards took witness with him on a trip to Sydney, but after the first week he became very disagreeable, told her that he did not like her after having lived with Mrs de Goey, and finally returned to Melbourne and resumed his relations with Mrs de Goey. When she married the respondent they were both poor, and they worked up together. He built the Brighton Coffee Palace containing 70 rooms, near the North Brighton station, and settled it upon her; but it was heavily mortgaged. He had many properties besides, and made large profits as a nightsoil contractor.
    Cross-examined.-I don't know that my husband owes £30,050. He has paid £159 within the last few months in tradesmen's bills for me. I should be surprised to hear that he has not £1 left for himself. He is able to give plenty to Mrs de Goey. I am keeping two of my children. I now get £4 a week from the coffee palace, my husband allows me £3 7s., and I live in a villa belonging to him worth about 25s a week.
    Mr Justice WILLIAMS -So that you are now receiving equal to £8 12s a week?
    Witness.-Yes.
    Charles Llewellyn Rees, a son-in-law of the petitioner, gave evidence as to the respondent's circumstances.
    This closed the petitioners case.
    Henry Carr, the respondent was then examined on his own behalf as to his financial position. The coffee palace cost £12,000 to build, and the furniture cost £2,000. The amount of the mortgage on it was £7,500. He had several other properties in that district, but his liabilities at present amounted to £30,050. Last year he received about £11,000 for nightsoil contracts, and the profit was probably about £3,000. When he first told his wife of his relations with Mrs de Goey she said she would never forgive him unless he cast the woman off and never gave her another sixpence. He said he was willing to cast her off, but would not leave her in want. The £1,500 was paid to Mr de Goey to stop his mouth. It was false to say that he (Carr) ever bought the woman. De Goey wrote the receipt. He (Carr) had nothing to do with the form of it.
    After a consultation, Mr Woolf said his client was willing to pay the petitioner £4 per week for herself and the two children upon her assigning to him her interest in the property settled upon her.
    Mr Justice WILLIAMS-She is better off than that now.
    Mr WOOLF.-Yes, but she is getting far more than she is entitled to. Mr Carr will increase it to £5.
    Mr Justice WILLIAMS - Well, Dr M'Inerney will you consider that?
    Dr M'INERNEY.- Yes, but my client says that this man's statements are grossly incorrect, and that he is really a wealthy man.
    The respondent was then cross-examined. He admitted having taken Mrs. de Goey to Adelaide (the trip coating £60), to Portarlington and to Geelong.
    Mr Justice WILI IAMS said the case must stand adjourned till next day. In the meantime the parties might put their heads together and see if they could not come to some arrangement. Amy Elizabeth 'Murtal' Hochstein2

  • 19 Mar 1887: A fire broke out at a quarter to 9 o'clock yesterday evening in a furniture shop and six-roomed dwellinghouse in Federal-buildings, Church-street, South Melbourne. The building is occupied by Mr. Samuel Mason, and nothing is known of the origin of the fire. A young man who was in charge states that he left the place all safe at half-past 8 o'clock. Considerable damage was done to the place and stock, but the South Melbourne Volunteer Fire Brigade and South Melbourne Brigade attended, and succeeded in saving the building from total destruction. The stock was insured for £500.8
  • 21 Mar 1887: FIRE AT SOUTH MELBOURNE.
    At 9 o'clock on Saturday night a fire broke out on the premises of Mr. Samuel Mason, furniture dealer, Federal buildings, Park-street, which but for the prompt action of the local fire brigades would, no doubt, have led to the destruction of the whole row of shops. The fire appears to have originated in a mattress in the front showroom, and the damage to the stock is considerable, although the flames were extinguished just as the wooden ceiling became ignited. It is understood that the stock is insured for £4,000 in the National Insurance Company. The premises belong to Mr. D. Gibson, of Hawthorn, and are also insured. Mr. Mason, it appears, resides at Brighton.9

Anecdote*ROBERTSON, James (1846-1925)
James Robertson, born at ‘Ballinluig Farm’, Inverness on 24 November 1846 came out from Scotland to Victoria with his parents, Duncan Robertson and Margaret nee Stewart and siblings.
He is listed as a student at Geelong College from 1863 to 1868 although no enrolment record exists for him. Enrolment records have not survived for the period 1861 to 1870. He appears in the Annual Reports and is listed as Captain of the 1st Cricket XIs of 1867 and 1868 and Captain of the 1st Football Team of 1868.
An obituary appeared in Pegasus in December 1925: ‘James Robertson, late of Mordialloc and Mimosa, passed away at his home, ‘Mooramong’, Mordialloc, after much pain and suffering, which he bore bravely, covering a long period of many months.
James was always proud of having gained the distinction of having the first group of the third generation hung in the School Dining Hall. In this group he is accompanied by his son, ‘Will’, and grandson, ‘Jim’, who are both now living at ‘Coongoola Station’, Queensland. ‘Senex’, in writing his obituary in the September number of ‘The Pastoral Review’, says-‘James Robertson, of Mimosa - great-hearted, big, honest, lovable Jim, straight in mind and body - now rests from his life's efforts. He was fated to suffer much in his last days on earth, and the way he faced sickness, pain and death can be taken as a lesson in bravery, and an inspiration by those who knew him and loved him well, and who will not forget his passing. To his very own, we, his friends, extend our deepest sympathy. Good-bye, Jim Robertson. ‘The days were dark at the crossing, but light shines ahead’. The Old Collegians extend their sympathy to the members of his family.’
James Robertson died on 29 August 1925.

  • 13 Aug 1928: Mr Wyatt Webster de Little, whose death occurred at Albury on August 4, was one of the best-known residents of the Temora district. Born in Melbourne 68 years ago Mr de Little came to this State in 1888, and for many years was manager for Messrs Blair and Syme, of Temora station Later he acquired a property near Temora, known as Narnoo Mia, where he established a first-class stud with merino sheep.
    Mr de Little was a member of the Farmers and Settlers' Association, the P and A Society, and the Narraburra Shire Council.
    When he left Temora he acquired property at Wyamba, Gerogery. He is survived by Mrs de Little, who is a daughter of the late Mr. James Robertson, of Mimosa station, Temora.3

Charles Frederick Krantzcke

Note Frederick Charles was born in Canterbury, Kent and later emigrated to Australia, apparently, to install machinery imported from Britain in mines in various places in New South Wales. This may have been the first electrical equipment (Dick Kerr, Electrical Motors & Generators) installed in Australia as it was the mining industry there that were the first to introduce it.
When he married Elizabeth Ann Skinner in 1883, he was living in Bourke Street, Woolloomooloo, Sydney, his name was given as Charles Frederick and he was a Bachelor. He was shown as an Electrician from Canterbury, Kent aged 30, his parents were shown as John Godfrey Krantzcke and Jane Keep, his fathers profession is shown as "Gentleman".
In July 1888 he wrote a letter to his father to tell him that he was about to take charge of installing Incandescent Electric Lighting in the town of Young 300 miles from Sydney and that he would have sole responsibility for the project which would be the first of its kind in the Australian Colony. (The town of Young was only established in 1882 and according to the Young website it was the first town other than capital cites to have electric street and homes lighting!! It was offically switched on at 7pm on 11 Dec 1889 by Lord Carrington).
Frederick Charles later became an electrician with the Sydney City council, in fact three of his sons also became electricians the council as did some their sons including Ron and Godfrey John.
Frederick and Elizabeth had seven children who carried the Krantzcke name down to the present day and his descendents are the only known Krantzckes in the world.1

  • 25 Jan 1877: Amongst the many appliances to be introduced into the new Victoria Club, in Collins-street, for the convenience of members, will be on improved system of electric communication between the various rooms and the manager's office. For this purpose an electric bell indicator, the largest ever made in the colony, has been manufactured by Messrs Hyde and Krantzcke, bellhangers, Little Collins-street west. It is constructed on the Manchester movement principle, possesses the most recent improvements, and does away with the necessity for a multiplicity of bells, only one bell being required. Each room is connected with the bell and indicator by means of separate wires, and on the face of the indicator there are 48 discs with numbers corresponding to those of the various rooms. Upon a button or key being touched in any of the apartments the bell rings, and a red spot appears in the disc on the indicator corresponding to the room where attendance is required. The keys in all the rooms may be operated on with the desired effect at the same moment. The red discs are then removed from sight and contact restored by pressing a knob, which acts on a lever frame inside the case. Thomas Cooper Hyde10

    The Victoria Club, Collins street, was opened yesterday by a luncheon, given in the large dining hall. About 300 gentlemen were present. The company included a number of members of the Legislature and the City Council Mr Paterson, the mayor of Melbourne, was in the chair. An excellent re past was prepared by Mr Chambers the club chef. A cone of ice which weighed 49lb. was one of the novel features of a well-dressed table.
