  • 3 Feb 1894: LARCENY BY A SERVANT.
    A coloured girl, named Minnie Wells, was charged with stealing a lady's gold watch and chain, two gold brooches, a gold ring, and a dress, the whole valued at £11. The accused, who was in the employ of Mr. John Ryan, station-master at Pakenham, was alleged to have stolen the goods from her mistress on the 25th ult. She was arrested at the house of a Mrs. Thompson, Cambridge street, Port Melbourne, and when arrested was wearing the dress, the jewellery being found on her. A remand to Pakenham was asked for and granted.6
  • 27 Jun 1896: MR JOHN RYAN.
    THE public of Sunbury will read with pleasure the following particulars concerning Mr John Ryan, who for several years has been stationmaster at the local station, but who last Tuesday left for Ringwood, to where he has been promoted. Mr Ryan was born in the year 1862, and he humorously adds, "I don't know what for and sometimes wish I hadn't." From this remark we must infer that Mr Ryan has had his share of departmental worry. Many old stagers will smile, with satisfaction to think that someone else has not been allowed to escape the usual brain-racking wear and tear of a responsible post of stationmaster. Mr Ryan has worked his way from porter to his present position of suburban stationmaster, and during his whole career has been a most diligent official, which accounts in a great measure for his rapid success. Mr Ryan never knew what it was to give into a difficulty ; he has persevered in the face of all obstacles, and has proved himself more than a mere theoretical believer in the adage, " Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might." Mr Ryan, who, by the way, is a native of Sunbury, entered the department in 1882, and was stationed at Echuca as porter. His first place as stationmaster was at Keilor-road, now Sydenham. Mr Ryan was stationed at Beaconsfield for several years, and was so popular that on his departure his numerous friends presented him with an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns. He was transferred from Beaconsfield to Pakenham, where he remained for about seven years, and was so well liked and respected that his many admirers on his leaving deemed it a fitting opportunity to recognise his many good qualities, so he was made the recipient of a valuable gold watch. Mr Ryan came from Pakenham to Sunbury, and during his sojourn with the people of the place he has always been a favourite. Indeed, it may safely be said wherever he is known he is popular and gains the goodwill and respect of all with whom he comes in contact. Mr Ryan has a happy knack of ingratiating himself into the good opinions of the officials over whom he is placed, and with whom he works smoothly and without friction, which perhaps as much as anything else has contributed to his remarkable success.
    Mr Ryan was also idenitfied in any movement for the advancement of his native town, and always at home in supporting the recreation institutions of Sunbury. Although naturally of a sympathetic and kindly temperament, yet he never allowed his private feelings to interfere with his official arrangements.
    He would "carpet" the highest under his authority for any dereliction of duty just as readily and as sternly as he would the very lowest. Mr Ryan's departure was regretted by all, but they were nevertheless pleased to hear of his promotion, for when a man has spent fourteen years of his life in the service of any firm or association, he has, irrespective of the value of his labours, acquired some claim on the consideration of those in whose service he has been so long engaged. His work must have been appreciated by the department, or promotion would not have come so speedily. Mr Ryan's career may be taken as an example of the many men who have risen by perseverance and in domitable determination to succeed, and it should be an incentive to many others.
    It would not be in keeping with the order of things to omit to mention Mr Ryan's pleasant wife, who with her husband make the most genial of hosts and hostesses, and all who have had the privilege of their acquaintance will admit that they have a charm about them which at once creates a favourable impression, and in a few minutes you feel as if you had known them all your life. The people of Sunbury have one consolation, in that his brother, Mr Jos. Ryan, has been left to them, and while not taking such an active part in public functions, he is deservedly popular, and bids fair to rival his brother in this respect. All who have met "Joe" will agree that he is "a jolly good fellow."7
  • 21 Jan 1914: John James Ryan, aged 27 years, grandson of Mr. John Carew, sen., a well-known business man at Albury, was thrown from a buggy at about 3 o'clock on Saturday morning in Smollett Street, Albury, and killed. No one was with him when the accident happened, but residents heard a vehicle passing at a rapid pace, subsequently returning and coming to a sudden stoppage. Ryan was afterwards found by Mr. W. Vincent, baker, lying dead, and 21 yards further on the horse was down, it its surmised that the horse bolted, and swerving threw Ryan out on his head, fracturing the base of his skull, death being instantaneous. Deceased's father, who is stationmaster at Toorak, Melbourne, intended visiting Albury on Monday to see his son, who formerly was associated with the Bank of Australasia in Victoria, and occupied the position of manager at a number of country centres.8
  • 29 Jan 1914: Mr. John Ryan, son of Mr. John Ryan (a former stationmaster of Sunbury) was killed by a fall from a buggy at Albury the other day.9
  • 6 Feb 1924: RAILWAY OFFENDERS. Retired Station-master's Excuse.
    John Ryan, aged 60 years, a land agent, of Union-street, Malvern, appeared before Mr Kelley, P.M. and Messrs. Bangs, Wilmot, Aarons, and Fitzsimmons, J.P.'s, at the Prahran Court, on Tuesday, on a charge of having behaved in an offensive manner on a railway station.
    Evidence given by two lad porters and an assistant station-master showed that on January 16 Ryan entered the porters' room at the Armadale railway station, and behaved offensively. When spoken to he became abusive. The police were sent for.
    Ryan said that he was a retired station-master, and had frequently had cause to remonstrate with the station staff for neglect of duty. The whole thing, he asserted, was a deliberate "frame-up."
    On the day of the alleged offence he had had toothache, and had taken stimulants to relieve the pain.
    Mr Kelley.—We think that these young porters did quite right in bringing you before the Court. We are satisfied that you behaved disgustingly. A fine of £5 was imposed with 18/ costs, in default imprisonment for three weeks.10
