  • 18 Nov 1933: Married In Lutheran Church
ALTHOUGH her wedding was quiet and she did not wear conventional wedding finery, Miss Gwendoline Prichard was a festive figure in the Lutheran Church, Gisborne Street, East Melbourne, today, where her marriage was celebrated with Mr Richard Bomball, son of the late Mr and Mrs K. Bomball of Braunschweig, Germany.
Miss Prichard, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs J. J. Prichard, "Lamastor," Black Rock, wore a soft frock of powder blue flat crepe with wide sleeves cut in one with the bodice. This was set off with a large fine straw hat, shoes and a wallet in the same coloring. Miss Dulcie Collins and Miss Mary Bomball, the bridesmaids, were rocked in dusty pink flamisol, set off with hats and wallets to tone with their frocks. Mr Thomas Cleary acted as best man; Mr Colin Prichard was groomsman. The mother of the bride introduced a decorative touch of color to a black georgette frock and black leghorn hat with a gay posy of summer flowers. Richard Erich Bomball12

Newspaper-Articles

  • 29 Jun 1918: CAPTAIN KELL. ONE OFFICER PICKED UP. Captain Kell, who is amongst those not so far picked up, is a native of Edinburgh, and is 40 years of age. He has been with Huddart Parker Limited since 1901, and has been one of the company's ship mas ters since 1901 — three years before the Wimmera was launched. He has been very popular in Australian shipping circles, and was regarded by Huddart Parker Ltd. as a very capable mariner. He has traded in practically every route on which Huddart Parker Ltd.'s steamers have traded. In the official articles of the Wimmera in Melbourne Captain Kell's address appeared as care of owners, Melbourne. For some time he was in the Sydney-Hobart passen ger service, and had command of the Westralia. He came out from England as deck officer of the Wimmera. He is a married man, his wife and family residing, it is believed, in Sydney.
Most, of the officers are also married, with homes in Sydney. The chief engineer, Mr. Paxton, who has been picked up at New Zealand, has a home at Canterbury, Vic. He has been an employe of Huddart Parker Ltd. for 27 years, but had made only two trips in the Wimmera. Mr. Wilson, the second officer, the only deck officer so far known to have been picked up, was formerly on the well-known steamer Zealandia, 7000 tons. Additional details concerning the fate of the passengers and crew so far unaccounted for will be anxiously awaited. The missing at present number 73, and it is feared that many of them have been drowned. Hopes are, however, entertained that later news will reveal that some at least have been saved. The fact that there were women and children on board the vessel accentuates the tragedy, in maritime circles it is considered practically certain that the Wimmera was sunk by a mine dropped by the German raider Wolf. The possibility of the mine having been sown more recent ly by another enemy vessel has been suggested, but the chance of such being the case is authoritatively stated to be extreme ly remote. Details concerning the loss of the Wimmera, which were received by Huddart Parker Ltd. yesterday, indicate that the steamer left Auckland on Tuesday last, at 11.30 a.m., for Sydney. She carried 80 passengers, and a crew of 78. She had on board mails for Australia and a cargo amounting to about 400 tons, and five racehorses in the live stock division. From the details to hand, it appears that the vessel struck the mine at 5.15 a.m. the fol lowing day. She foundered shortly after wards. In the meantime, the passengers and crew had taken to the boats, and there is no mention so far as to any casualties as a result of the mine explosion. Of the total complement of 158 souls, 85, including 48 passengers, are known to have been landed. It is believed that many of these were landed at Auckland. In the course of an official statement is sued by Huddart Parker Ltd. yesterday, it was stated that trawlers were out searching for the missing boats. Whether there had been actual loss of life was not known. Early in the morning the New Zealand manager of Huddart Parker Ltd. cabled the list of survivors (those already picked up). The Melbourne office of the com pany thereupon despatched an urgent cablegram, asking what prospects there were of finding further survivors. Up to last evening no reply to this message had come to hand. The Commonwealth Ship ping Controller said subsequently that no further word had been received by the Shipping Board. First intimation regard ing a mishap to the vessel reached Mel bourne a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday. The sinking of the vessel from the point of view of the apparent loss of life is the worst war loss yet sustained in Australian waters. It is yet to be known whether the loss of life will exceed that attending the distressing foundering of the Huddart Par ked line tug boat Nyora, scarcely a year ago, when all but two of the crew of 14 were drowned off the South Australian coast. The Nyora, however, fell a victim to storm and wind— a risk which every British seaman accepts every time he puts to sea; but in the case of the Wimmera the loss is ap parently the result of deliberate human agency, planned with a view to bringing about such a disaster. The loss of the vessel recalls the fact that the presence of fresh mine fields on the New Zealand coast was recently cabled to 'The Age.' In view of the fact that for the past six months the Wimmera had been employed in the Sydney and New Zealand service her owners state that most members of her lost crew had their homes in New South Wales, only about two being Victorians. At the time of the dislocation of inter-State shipping, owing to the big New South Wales colliery disturbance in December, 1916, the Wimmera was laid up at Mel bourne from the end of November, 1916, until February, 1917. When recommissioned she was transferred from the Melbourne Wellington-Bluff route to the SydneyAuck land run, and the last rccord of a crew signing on at Melbourne is in January, 1917, immediately after the coal trouble. The only names of her last crew which ap pear in these Melbourne articles are:— G. K. KOECK, carpenter, a native of Hobart, 28 years of age, transferred from the Goulburn. E. CURTIS, steward, 37 years of age, Bridport street, Albert Park. W. GALLAGHER, first grade steward, 45 years, Macpherson-street, Essendon. H. GALLAGHER, second grade steward, 25 years, of Macpherson-street, Essendon. W. Gallagher had transferred from the A.U.S.N, line steamer Aramac, and H. Gallagher from the Katoomba.
  • 29 Jun 1918: AUSTRALIAN STEAMER LOST. THE WIMMERA MINED AND SUNK Disaster Within Day's Sail of Auckland. HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE FEARED. EIGHTY-FIVE KNOWN SURVIVORS SEVENTY-THREE PERSONS MISSING.
The well-known Australian passenger steamer Wimmera, 3022 tons, owned by Huddart Parker Ltd., Melbourne, was sunk by a mine on Wednesday at 5.15 a.m, about eighteen hours after leaving Auckland for Sydney. The passengers and crew totalled in all 158, of whom 85 are so far known to have been saved. Only meagre details of the disaster are at present available, but it is believed that the Wimmera fell a victim to one of the mines sown by the German raider Wolf when that vessel was cruising in Austra lian waters last July. The Navy department last night issued the following official statement relative to the loss of the Wimmera: — 'Early in the morning of 26th inst. the steamer Wimmera, on a voyage from Auckland to Sydney, was sunk by striking a mine. It is known that there are 85 survivors out of a total of 158 persons." Names of the Survivors Huddart Parker Ltd. yesterday received a brief coded message, giving the names of the survivors from the Wimmera who had been landed in New Zealand. The names are as they appeared in the message, no initials or other details being given.14

  • 24 Feb 1910: The death of Mr. Oliver Vial after a short illness, removes from business circles a well-known personality. On arrival in this State, his parents, with their family, settled at Geelong. In the sixties Mr Vial removed to Melbourne, where he received his business training. Later, in partnership with the late Mr W. F. Walker, M.L.A. for Hawthorn, he established the tea merchant's business in which he was engaged at his death, the business being carried on at one time as Messrs. Walker and Vial, and subsequently as Messrs. Oliver Vial and Co. His experience and industry were from time to time welcome on the boards of various companies, amongst others of the Equity Trustees Company, and at the time of his death he was a director of the Jumbunna Coal Company. He leaves a widow two daughters and three sons, amongst them being Mrs. John Grout, of Brisbane, and Mr S. B. Vial, principal of the University High School.9
