  • 27 Jun 1930: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. Late on Tuesday night a wooden house, the property of Mr Ford, and situated on the new golf course, The Lakes, was destroyed by fire. The house was occupied by Mr. Vincent, manager for Mr Ford, who with his wife and family were absent. Mr Vincent was returning from town in his motor car, and on the hill, when he stopped to let out a passenger, the brakes failed to hold. The car ran backwards, eventually overturning.     The funeral of Pastor George Ebank Wilson (40), of the Baptist Church, Deloraine, who died in the Launceston Public Hospital on Friday, took place in the Deloraine General Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. He was a son of Pastor and Mrs. George Wilson, of Upway, Victoria, and was born in India, where his father was a missionary. Mr. Wilson was stationed at the Gulf of Carpentaria, where, as a missionary, he contracted fever. He arrived at Deloraine to take up his position only three weeks ago, and conducted services on the first Sunday following his arrival. On the Monday he was officially welcomed, and the following day he entered hospital. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pauline Wilson, one son, Bryan, and one daughter, Rosemary.
    As the casket was borne from the church the "Dead March" was played by Mrs. R. H. Jago. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. R. W. Dobbinson (Launceston). Rev. A. E. Chamberlain (St. Marks, Deloraine), Rev. R. H. Jago (Methodist Church, Deloraine), and Rev. D. Black. The carriers were Messrs. C. W. Hall, V. Ratcliffe, A. Bounds, A. J. McKendrick. The chief mourners were Pastor Ian Wilson (brother) and Mrs. Cheechi (sister).
    The floral tributes included wreaths from the Delorine Baptist Church and fellow clergymen.
    The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. B. J. Cameron, Deloraine.11

  • 13 Apr 1907: KESWICK CONVENTION MISSION.
    As per advertisement a special mission to Christians for the deepening of tihe; Spiritual life is to be commenced next Thursday at 7.45 p.m. at the Museum-street Baptist Church building. The teaching will be on the lines of the Keswick Convention, and the special missioner is Mr. George Wilson; of the Ceylon and Indian General Mission. Mr. Wilson, who has had good experience of the great Keswick Conventions in England, has also taken a prominent part in similar movements in Southern India. The pastor of the church, the Rev. A. S. Wilson, wishes it to be distinctly understood that these meetings will be of an interdenominational character, and all church members, and in fact all who desire to attend, will be welcomed.18
  • 13 Apr 1907: PERTH BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL.
    As advertised the anniversary services of the Baptist Sunday School, Museum-street, Perth, will take place to-morrow. For some time past the scholars have been prepared under the baton of Mr. L. E. Shapcott for special singing, and the officers of the school have been very fortunate in securing as the special speakers, the two evangelists who only arrived from India on Thursday by the R.M.S. Ortona.
    The speaker at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. will be Mr. W. H. Stanes, whose family is widely known and respected in Southern India. He has been for many years wonderfully successful as a missioner to children, and is travelling through Australia and New Zealand at the present time as the honorary missioner of the Indian Sunday School Union. At 7.30 Mr. George Wilson, of the Ceylon and Indian General Mission, will be the speaker, who while accompanying Mr. Stanes, is pursuing the line of mission work, known as the "Higher Life Teaching" on the Keswick Convention lines.19
  • 23 Apr 1907: Keswick Convention Meetings.—A correspondent writes :—"The special mission conducted by Mr. George Wilson of the Ceylon and India General Mission, is daily growing in power and interest. The meetings for the deepening of the spiritual life have been removed from the upper hall at the rear of the Baptist Church into the church, where a large attendance gathered last night, and listened with intense interest to an address on "The Surrendered Will." The meeting was remarkable for its quiet pervasiveness and power, and at its close a large number retired to the supper room, where a large number testified to the help derived from the gatherings. The meetings are heing held nightly. Mr. Wilson is careful to explain that he comes not as a direct representative of the Keswick Convention Committee, but as an Indian Missionary, who conducts his work on Keswick lines. A direct representative from the Keswick Committee is visiting Australia next year, and an effort will be made to have West Australia included in the tour."20
  • 19 Jun 1911: Mr. George Wilson, who was a passenger by the Orsova en route to Melbourne on Saturday, is visiting the Commonwealth and New Zealand as a deputation from the Ceylon and India General Mission. He will also hold missions for the deepening of the spiritual life. Mr. Wilson will return to Adelaide in August to conduct a mission in the Pirie Street Methodist Church.21
  • 19 Aug 1911: Mr. George Wilson, deputation secretary of the Ceylon and India General Mission, is in Adelaide, and will conduct meetings for the "Deepening of Spiritual Life" in Maughan Church, Franklin-street next week. Formerly he was a commercial traveller in Scotland, but through the influences of the Keswick Convention he was led to devote his life to missionary work among the heathen in India. He has also had much experience in convention work among English-speaking people in India. Four years ago Mr. Wilson paid a visit to Australia, and conducted missions, which were a great blessing to many.22
  • 17 Oct 1911: MISSIONARY MEETING
    At the Christian Mission Church last night Mr. George Wilson, deputation secretary of the Ceylon and India General Mission, delivered an address on mission work to a large and appreciative audience.
    The speaker, who has been labouring is the Indian mission field for the past 17 years, related how God called him from a lucrative commercial life to go to India to preach the Gospel and work amongst the heathen. Many interesting narratives were related of the difficulties and hardships the pioneer missionaries have to encounter in their work for Christ, and told how, in answer to prayer, these were overcome, and both temporal and spiritual needs supplied. A number of stories were told of the triumph of the Gospel over heathen idolatry and superstition, and the hardships and persecution some of the converts undergo who accept Christianity owing to the various castes in India. Before closing the meeting the speaker urged his audience to remember the foreign mission work in their prayers, and, as they were able, to do what they could towards helping financially. A most profitable and interesting meeting was closed with a prayer.23
  • 11 Jul 1913: A stirring address on mission work in India was given by Mr George Wilson, of Ceylon and India General Mission. He stated that it was 19 years since he first went to India. When he went to the Madras presidency there were no Christians. It was hard work to break down caste prejudice, but they had succeeded in doing that, and God was now doing mighty things for the people in India, with its teeming population of 350 millions.24
  • 4 Sep 1916: CEYLON AND INDIA GENERAL MISSION.
    Mr. George Wilson, who, for more than 22 years, has represented the Ceylon and India General Mission, arrived in Adelaide on Saturday morning, and was tendered a welcome at the Y.M.C.A. rooms during the afternoon. The chair was occupied by Mr Edgar Horwood, who expressed gratification at again having Mr. Wilson amongst them in Adelaide. The Rev. R. Mitchell conducted devotional exercises, after which Mr. Wilson delivered a brief address. He mentioned that he first visited Adelaide nine years ago, and was again in the city about five years ago. He and Mrs. Wilson came from India in February last.
    Speaking of mission work in India, he said there had never before been so many open doors in India as there were now. He was deeply grateful for the manner in which the country had remained loyal to Britain in the great crisis through which the Empire was passing. When they remembered that there were 60,000,000 Mahomedans in India, and that there was great jealousy between these people and the Hindus, they would see that there were many difficult problems to be faced. If the people had not remained loyal during that time of crisis the European population would have been in a perilous position. He had felt greatly encouraged when, at a
    comparatively early stage of the war, he saw two great regiments - one from the north and the other from the south - preparing to take part in the conflict. The work of education was spreading in India, and through education many of the people received the Word of God. He would, however, like to see more success in mission work amongst the higher castes. They had much to encourage them in their work. Self-support was increasing amongst the different mission sections. There were quite a large number of self-supporting churches now, although such a thing was hardly known twenty-two years ago when he first made acquaintance with India.
    The Ceylon and India General Mission is undenominational, and it is worked on the faith principle. The enterprise has largely developed during recent years, and there are twenty-five missionaries now engaged in the work. Mr. Wilson expects to be in South Australia for six weeks.25

  • 20 Apr 1923: A bush fire broke out in the gully in front of "Lynwood," Mr Wilson's property, last Monday afternoon, and soon swept the sides of the hills. Mr Jack Ashley's house was in great danger of being burnt, but owing to the splendid efforts of the residents who turned out in force to beat back the fire, the homestead was saved. The flames were within a few chains of the house, and an anxious time was spent by Mrs Ashley and family. Emma Wilson29
  • 4 Oct 1924: Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Sumerson, of the Ceylon and India General Mission, arrived in Adelaide yesterday from Melbourne. They are staying in Adelaide during October, and are leaving for their field on October 30. While here they will be conducting meetings in the interest of the mission. .... It may be remembered by many that this is the mission that Mr. George Wilson represented when he held meetings for the deepening of die spiritual life some years ago. The English director of the mission is Mr. Charles Inwood, one of the leaders of the Keswick convention. Mr. Edgar Horwood is the local representative.30

  • 16 Oct 1931: Drawing-room Meeting
    Yesterday afternoon a number of ladies accepted the invitation of Mrs. J. L. Hurse to a drawing room meeting at St. Andrew's Manse, Welman-street. The speaker of the afternoon was Mr. George Wilson, who is one of the pioneers of the Ceylon and India Mission, and is now the secretary of the mission. Mr. Wilson is visiting Launceston on deputation work. During the absence of Rev. J. L. Hurse, Mr. Wilson occupied the pulpit at St. Andrew's Church at both services last Sunday.
    Mr. Wilson is an eloquent and interesting speaker, and he thrilled his hearers as he spoke of his work in India. During the afternoon Mrs. R. Smedley sang Judes beautiful setting of the song "Peace be Still."
    At the conclusion of the meeting afternoon tea, was served by the hostess and Miss Dorothy Hurse.32
