  • 6 Mar 1920: DIVORCE COURT. A SORRENTO EPISODE
    In the Practice Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Hood, Archie Angelo Hug, 36 years of age, of St. Kilda rd., doctor of dentistry, petitioned for a decree nisi for the dissolution of his marriage with Doris Ellen Hug, 28 years of age, on the ground of misconduct. Cyril Steele was cited as co-respondent. The parties were married in 1913, and there was one child.
    Mr Ah Ket, (instructed by Richards and Cross), who appeared for petitioner, stated that respondent and co-respondent were engaged to be married, but the engagement was broken off, and the parties did not meet for several years. After co-respondent's return from the war he again met Mrs. Hug. Just before Christmas 1919, respondent and a woman friend went to Sorrento to get a house ready for the holidays. At Sorrento co-respondent was waiting with a motorcar, and drove them to the house, where respondent and co-respondent were in the dining room alone. On hearing a motorcar approaching respondent rushed into the room where her friend was, and exclaimed, "My God! Here is Archie". Petitioner and co-respondent came to blows, and finally petitioner turned to respondent and said, "Now Doris, you will have to choose between the two of us." She replied "I am going to go with Cyril Steele." Since then respondent and co-respondent had lived together.
    Steele, on being called, admitted misconduct.
    A decree nisi was granted, with costs against co-respondent. Cyril Henry Augustus Steele21
  • 10 Oct 1936: Doris' sister: DOUBLE SUICIDE - Coroner's Finding in Montrose Case - "No Sign of Compulsion"
    After evidence had been given yesterday at an inquest into the deaths of Mrs. Phyllis Olga Klatchko, aged 40 years, and her cousin Graham Henry Duckett, aged 18 years, who were found in a closed car which had been filled with exhaust gas from the engine, the city coroner (Mr Tingate, P.M.), said that there was nothing to indicate that Mrs. Klatchko had been compelled to enter the car.
    Vernon Lynden Duckett, warehouseman, of Towers road, Toorak, father of the dead youth said that his son had been of happy disposition, but recently he had changed. He had become quieter. At 7.30 p.m. on September 22 his son had declined to accompany the family to a picture show. His subsequent absence from home did not cause alarm until the following evening. He identified the writing in a note produced as that of his son.
    The note said that the writer had taken Mrs. Klatchko to Montrose by force.
    Henry Cyril Augustus Steele, managing director, of Kooyong road, Toorak, brother-in-law of Mrs. Klatchko said that she was of bright disposition, and when he saw her last at 5 p.m. on September 23 she appeared to be normal.
    Austin E. Lewin, warehouse assistant, of Punt road, South Yarra, said that on September 24, at Mr. Steele's request he went to the week-end home of the Ducketts at Montrose. In a car the doors and windows of which were closed he found the bodies of Mrs. Klatchko and Duckett huddled together on the back seat. The car was in a garage, the door of which was slightly open.
    Constable Thomas Mason, of Croydon, said that Graham Duckett had his left arm round Mrs. Klatchko when their bodies were found. A piece of hose had been connected to the exhaust pipe of the car and the other end inserted into the car. One of the womans arms was round Duckett. There was no sign that Duckett had forcibly held her in the car. The engine apparently had run until the petrol supply was exhausted.
    The coroner found that Graham Duckett and Mrs. Klatchko had died from carbon monoxide poisoning administered by themselves.22

  • 14 Jul 1939: STEELE WILL DISPUTE - £1,000 a Year for Widow
    By the terms of a settlement approved by Mr Justice Martin in the Practice Court yesterday, the widow of Henry Cyril Augustus Steele, aged 47 years, of Toorak road. Toorak, furniture warehouseman, who was drowned in the bay on January 18, will receive from his estate an annuity of £1,000 for life.
    Mr Steele set out from Mornington in his £1,000 speedboat, with his chauffeur, Arthur Jackson, on the afternoon of January 18, to wave to his niece, who was a passenger on the Nieuw Zeeland for the East. They did not return, and after a long search Mr. Steeles body was found three days later near the mouth of the Werribee River. The chauffeur was drowned also.
    By his will, which was dated only two days before his death, Mr. Steele left the whole of his estate, of a net value of £113,860, to his two sons - Phillip John Rupert, aged 19 years, and Norman Cyril, aged 12 years, subject to the payment of an annuity of £200 to his widow during her widowhood. He appointed his sons and the Union Trustee Co of Australia Ltd executors and trustees.
    He stated in his will that he had already given his wife a "substantial property" - Lillimur, in Queen's road, Melbourne - in addition to having made two settlements on her. The property is valued at £8,000.
    The widow, Doris Ellen Steele, aged 47 years of Toorak road, Toorak, lodged a caveat against the grant of probate, claiming that, having regard to the standard of living and comfort which she had enjoyed during her married life, the annuity of £200 during her widowhood was wholly inadequate and insufficient.
    She also claimed from the City Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd £ 25 830, being the value of three life policies taken out by her husband, and threatened to institute legal proceedings to establish her claim. She alleged that the policies had been taken out for her benefit. How- ever, the society decided to retain the proceeds of the policies pending the determination of her claims under the Administration of Probate Act and the Administration of Probate (Testator's Family Maintenance) Act 1937.
    The manager of the Trustee Company (Mr Samuel Cooke), in an affidavit, expressed the opinion that the settlement arrived at was in the best interests of the estate and the beneficiaries.
    In consideration of the increase in the annuity from £200 during widowhood to £1,000 for life, and the freeing of the Queen's road property of encumbrance, Mrs Steele abandons her claim on the £25,830 due on the three life policies.
    Mr. Justice Martin approved the settlement, subject to certain conditions and also sanctioned the withdrawal of the caveat.

    THERE wasn't even a breeze from the sea to relieve the intensity of the heat at the Mornington Race Club's Christmas meeting yesterday.
    But despite the heat, a huge crowd of determined racegoers attended.
    However, the women were fairly lackadaisical about the actual races and stayed firmly under the big umbrellas in the beer garden, or sat on Mie ground near the fences and shady trees.
    Committee-men's wives helped to look after the many visitors and entertained a number at lunch.
    Mrs. Reg Ansett, wife of the chairman, had Mrs. John Cain and Miss Marjorie Todd, Sydney, with her, also various members of the Ansett family, who are staying with her and her husband at their home, Gunyong Valley, Mt. Eliza.
    Mrs. V. Mayes, wife of the vice-chairman, who is at her Mt. Eliza seaside home for the summer with daughter Judith and son John, had as her guests Mrs. E. B. Coles, Mt. Eliza; Mrs. Sloan Morpeth, Mrs. John Ramsay, and Miss Elizabeth Howitt.
    Other committee wives noticed were Mrs. W. R. Bishop, Mrs. T. B. Guest, down from her Upper Beaconsfield home for the day; Mrs. Bruce Watson, and Mrs. J.     Fragrant white lilac fashioned the bridal bouquet which was carried by Miss Betty (Joan Pauline) Hickie when she was married to Mr Gordon Nugent Ayrey at Christ Church South Yarra yesterday afternoon.
    The bride is the younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Bernard L Hickie of Melbourne and the bridegroom is the only son of the late Mr Charles Ayrey of Warranooke and Mrs Ayrey of Montreux, Switzerland. The Rev L Townsend performed the ceremony.
    The bride was given away by her brother, Mr J B Hickie and wore a gown of hyacinth blue crepe. The high neckline was softly draped and the empire bodice was made with narrow-fitted bands which continued round the back to widen and form twin trains. Her blue tulle veil was held to her head with white lilac.
    The bridesmaids were Misses Pamela McKewan and Susan McKewan, nieces of the bride. Their ankle-length frocks were of white hailspot muslin, finished at the waistline with sashes of blue satin. Clusters of blue flowers were fastened to their wrists and they wore blue shoes and blue caps.
    An informal party was given by the brides mother and sister (Mrs Ernest McKewan) at the home of Mrs McKewan in Bruce street, Toorak. Gordon Nugent Ayrey9
  • 23 Mar 1946: Mr and Mrs B. L. Hickie, who sold their cottage at Healesville last September and went to Rockhampton to visit their son at the Bank of Australasia (he was the secretary of the South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club when he was at the Bank of Australasia in Toorak some time ago), are back in Victoria. Mrs Hickie told me to-day that after their Rockhampton visit they returned to Sydney to stay with their daughter, Mrs McKewan, and her husband, Colonel E. McKewan, and now they are with another daughter, Mrs Gordon Ayrey, and Mr Ayrey, at their home, Applecross, Upper Beaconsfield.4

    A five-year-old was responsible for one of the brightest of the Cup festivities.
    It happened this way. Little Jane Ayrey - yes, you heard, only five - will have her first book from her publisher's any minute now. Her mother helped. She made Jane's rhymes into nonsense jobs, and the illustrations are Jane's unaided efforts. It is called Meet Me At Five.
    To celebrate this big event and the wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Gordon Ayrey, a real sit-down dinner was prepared and served unaided by Mrs Ayrey at her charming old home, Applecross, Upper Beaconsfield.
    Guests came from Melbourne by car to Applecross - a charming setting for a party, for the house is set in what was once an old apple orchard, and the trees are a riot of blossom just now. Jane Christine Ayrey10

    A new flower shop has been opened at Frankston by Mrs. Gordon Ayrey and Mrs. "Ginner" Gray, who are well known tor their floral arrangements The shop is attractively painted, with candy pink and white, striped walls.11

  • 2 Sep 1935: WEEK-END ACCIDENTS. FOUR INJURED WHEN CARS COLLIDE - Mishap at Brighton
    Four people were injured yesterday yesterday morning when two motor-cars came into collision in Point Nepean road Brighton. They were:—
    AYREY, GORDON, aged about 26 years of Chevron, St. Kilda road — Shock and abrasions; allowed to go home.
    AYREY, PEGGY, aged 27 years, his sister, of the same address.—Admitted to the Hamilton Russell wing of the Alfred Hospital witth severe shock and abrasions.
    STEVENS, HERBERT, aged 40 years, of Canterbury road, Middle Park. — Fractured ribs and shock. Allowed to go home.
    DOCKERTY, JACK, aged 34 years, of Grieves street Fitzroy. — Shock and abrasions.
    Ayrey and his sister were travelling in Point Nepean road when their car swerved to avoid another vehicle and crashed into the car driven by Stevens. Both cars were greatly damaged.13
  • 2 Nov 1937: Weddings: Ayrey-Hickie
    Fragrant white lilac fashioned the bridal bouquet which was carried by Miss Betty (Joan Pauline) Hickie when she was married to Mr Gordon Nugent Ayrey at Christ Church South Yarra yesterday afternoon.
    The bride is the younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Bernard L Hickie of Melbourne and the bridegroom is the only son of the late Mr Charles Ayrey of Warranooke and Mrs Ayrey of Montreux, Switzerland. The Rev L Townsend performed the ceremony.
    The bride was given away by her brother, Mr J B Hickie and wore a gown of hyacinth blue crepe. The high neckline was softly draped and the empire bodice was made with narrow-fitted bands which continued round the back to widen and form twin trains. Her blue tulle veil was held to her head with white lilac.
    The bridesmaids were Misses Pamela McKewan and Susan McKewan, nieces of the bride. Their ankle-length frocks were of white hailspot muslin, finished at the waistline with sashes of blue satin. Clusters of blue flowers were fastened to their wrists and they wore blue shoes and blue caps.

  • 9 Jan 1946: IN FACE OF STRONG OPPOSITION from Crs. A. G. Robinson and T. F. Houlihan, who were opposed to placing any further registrations or restrictions on primary producers, Berwick Council decided at its December meeting that in future all piggeries in the shire must be registered annually.
    The matter was broached by Health Inspector J. Robertson in his monthly report when he mentioned the proposed establishment of a piggery at Upper Beaconsfield and stated that another one had been established there along St. George’s Rd. “In my November report I asked for a direction in writing about the annual registration of piggeries in the municipality, and this request is now repeated,” he stated. Mr. N. Ayrey, he added, intended to establish a piggery, of 200 pigs at Upper Beaconsfield.
    Moving that the report be received, Cr. J. Richardson explained that Mr. Ayrey, when the position had been explained to him, had decided not to go ahead with his project. He (the speaker) had nothing against starting a piggery there—the situation was ideal, but it was in a residential area and that was a serious matter. There were several boarding houses in the locality. Capt. McKenzie’s piggery had been established since they gazetted the Act and it was about time they saw that every piggery in the shire was registered and approved—particularly when they were in residential areas. With the electrification of the Gippsland line places like Beaconsfield and Berwick would become almost suburban and council would have to exercise some control over piggeries. He moved that all piggeries in the shire must be registered by March 31st at a fee of 5/- and must be inspected annually.
    Cr. Robinson pointed out that new piggeries in the shire must comply with their regulations.
    “The inspector already has all the power a man could want under the existing regulations,” the secretary stated.
    Cr. Richardson: But if it hadn’t been for the War Agricultural Committee Mr. Ayrey wouldn’t have known he had to obtain council’s approval.
    The secretary: Anybody wishing to establish a new piggery must apply to the shire for a permit under existing regulations.
    Cr. Richardson: But they don’t know that. It is most important that we have control and annual inspections.
    Cr. Houlihan: Just another licence to worry the farming population. A farmer almost needs a clerk to keep up with all the licences he’s got to have now! “I don’t believe it would be any hardship” put in Cr. Whiteside. “lt just means anybody keeping more than five pigs would have to register. Unless we see that they do and keep their pigs under proper conditions, we’re going to be clouted. What’s to prevent any man coming into a catchment or creek area with his piggery unless we have control?”
    Supporting and seconding the motion, Cr Greaves said the council should have had its lesson from the Cardinia Park affair. They had suffered sufficiently there. “I don’t like putting more restrictions on the producers,” he added, “but I realise unless we assume control, these piggeries do get started in residential areas and along creeks. We don’t know about it until the pigs are in there—and then we can whistle!”
    In face of the information before council he would support the motion, stated Cr. Kinsella. Their by-law already prevented the establishment of new piggeries without a permit and the motion only brought it actively into force. He didn’t see the slightest hardship in the annual licence. Unless they went the full distance and did the job properly it was no good—they might as as well scrap their by-law.
    Cr. Robinson said he would support the motion if he could see any benefit from it—but he couldn’t. The inspector had all the power he wanted now.
    Cr. Anderson: How many piggeries are registered in the shire now?
    Mr. Robertson: None!
    Cr. Greaves: If I liked to establish a piggery I’ve a perfect right to do so at present and nobody could stop me once I got it, started. We found that out at Cardinia Park. We’ve got to do this job properly.
    Supporting, the motion Cr Dore, however, made it clear that he didn’t want to see it harshly enforced if a farmer only had a few pigs and was keeping them under reasonable conditions.
    Cr. Fallon didn’t think any piggeries should be registered in residential or watershed areas.
    Both Crs. Robinson and Houlihan fought the motion strongly, but when it came to a vote they were its only opponents. Surgeon Captain Alexander "Alister" Scott-Mackenzie15

    A five-year-old was responsible for one of the brightest of the Cup festivities.
    It happened this way. Little Jane Ayrey - yes, you heard, only five - will have her first book from her publisher's any minute now. Her mother helped. She made Jane's rhymes into nonsense jobs, and the illustrations are Jane's unaided efforts. It is called Meet Me At Five.
    To celebrate this big event and the wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Gordon Ayrey, a real sit-down dinner was prepared and served unaided by Mrs Ayrey at her charming old home, Applecross, Upper Beaconsfield.
    Guests came from Melbourne by car to Applecross - a charming setting for a party, for the house is set in what was once an old apple orchard, and the trees are a riot of blossom just now. Pauline Joan Marie 'Betty' Hickie7
