Newspaper-Articles

  • 13 Jan 1902: THE APOLLO BAY FATALITY. AN UNFORTUNATE FAMILY.
Mr William Croft, manager of the Telegraph department forwarded the following communication on Saturday:—Apollo Bay advises—' Re Arthur and Frank Ramsden accidentally drowned at Cape Patton on January 3, one body recovered today.' "
    Berwick, Saturday.
In addition to the loss of husband and youngest son by drowning at Apollo Bay last week Mrs. Ramsden, of Harkaway, has sustained another sad bereavement in the death of her eldest son, 20 years of age and the only remaining male member of the family. The young man, who had been subject to epileptic fits for seven years, went to a neighbour's house, a short distance away, and when returning must have been seized with a fit, as he was found dead an hour or two later about 150 yards from home. A magisterial inquiry was held this morning and a verdict of death from epilepsy recorded. John Arthur Ramsden7
  • 17 Jan 1902: APOLLO BAY. (From our Correspondent) The body of the young man, Frank Ramsden, drowned at Cape Patten, was recovered on Saturday last. A magisterial inquiry was held by Mr L. Martin, J.P., and the remains were buried at Cape Pat-ten. Nothing has been seen of the father, Mr Arthur Ramsden, and it is not con-sidered probable that it will now be re-covered. The sole witness and survivor of the tragedy. Mr Frank Grace, in his evi-dence stated that they were not able to fish in their usual spots owing to a strong south-easterly sea. They went fishing on the east side of the point near the " blow hole." All three members of the party were fishing in different pools, the elder Ramsden in a pool at a lower level, but up to the time of the accident no wave had reached above Mr Ramsden's feet, when suddenly a huge wave rolled in and swept Mr Ramsden off the rock backwards into the pool. Mr Grace, who saw it all, imme-diately went to Mr Ramsden's assistance. He managed to give, him his hand, but could not pull him up as the kelp and back wash were too strong. When Mr. Ramsden got out of reach of the hand, Mr Grace, by gripping a ledge of the rock with his hands, extended his feet the full length of his body out into the sea; but deceased failed to keep his grip of Grace's feet. When he let go he was still swimming strong, and said, " It is all right Frank." Grace now called to the son, Frank Ramsden, who up till then did not know of the accident, to bring his fishing rod, while Grace again extended his feet into the sea as before from the other side of the pool, and again Ramsden was unable to keep hold of his feet. A second huge wave now came and swept Grace into the pool. The latter pluckily swam out to Mr Ramsden, and brought him into the edge of the rocks again, when a third wave buried the two struggling men in a mass of kelp, and swept the son into the pool over the top of the other two. Grace, now thoroughly ex-hausted, just managed to struggle up through the kelp to the surface, and how he got out no one will ever know. He then saw Frank Ramsden about 30 yards out calling "Frank, Frank," and the father further out floating and exhausted. Grace if still suffering from the severe shock, and for days after the occurrence he was in such danger that a visiting doctor at Apollo Bay was sent for to attend to him. Mr Marcin, J.P., warmly complimented Mr Grace on his heroic conduct and the plucky and ingenious methods he adopted at the imminent risk of his own life in his at-tempt to save the drowning man. The eldest son of the late Mr Ramsden died last week, and was buried in the Melbourne cemetery on Monday. Frank Samuel Kennedy Ramsden8

Charles Arthur Ramsden4
