  • 5 Apr 1918: WELCOME HOME.
    Pte. H. McNaughton, of Beaconsfield, who has just returned from the Front, was entertained at a welcome social at the Beaconsfield hall last week. The gathering was one of the largest and most enthusiastic ever held there.
    Cr Martin, the shire president, who occupied the chair, on behalf of local residents, extended a hearty welcome to Pte. McNaughton, and at the same time referred to the noble work done by the boys at the Front. It was impossible, he said, for the people to do too much for those who had done and suffered so much for Australia.
    Pte. McNaughton was presented with a gold medal bearing the following inscription:—"Presented by residents of Beaconsfield to Pte. H. McNaughton for duty nobly done in the A.I.F. abroad."
    Mrs A. S. Chirnside, of "Edrington," also presented Pte. McNaughton with a sprig of white heather, bound with the national colors.
    Mr A. S.. Chirnside, in a short address, spoke of the splendid work done by the boys at the Front, and at the same time stated that Mrs Chirnside, recognising their valiant work, had decided to give the district boys 500 acres of the "Edrington" estate an announcement that was loudly applauded.
    Mr Calinan responded on behalf of Pte. McNaughton, thanking the residents for their very kindly welcome and their gifts.
    The following contributed to the harmony of the evening: - Mrs F. Richardson, the Misses Smith, Miss N. Nolan, Mr Shaw and Mr Midgley.
    Refreshments were also provided, a fine cake, decorated with the colors of the returned soldiers, and presented by Mrs A. W. Shorthouse, being a special attraction.7
  • 30 May 1918: Sad End of Returned Soldier.
    Mr Hugh McNaughton, of Beaconsfield, who recently returned from the battlefields of France, and got a hearty welcome from the residents, has succumbed to an operation in Caulfield Hospital, last Thursday. He had been wounded on the top of the head, and in the endeaver to cure the suffering that he at times experienced, it was decided to undergo the operation. Unfortunately he succumbed in the Hospital immediately after. A large number from both Upper and Lower Beaconsfield attended his interment in Berwick Cemetery, on Friday. He was one of the first young men to offer his services for his country, and has gone through the cruel campaign, returning to die. Extreme sympathy is extended to his widow mother, his sister and brothers (one of which, William, familiarly known around here as Mick) is yet at the front, which shows the pluck and patriotism of the family.8

Anecdote*1953Biographical History of Tamara's father: Albert Coates was born in St. Petersburg in 1882 into a family of English merchants-part of a larger expatriate community that the sea trade routes between northern England and the Baltic had brought to Russia earlier in the 19th century. Coates was sent to primary school in London, then to high school and university in Liverpool, where he studied sciences. He was supposed to join his father's business, but instead turned to music, enrolling at the Leipzig Conservatory in 1902. There, he studied conducting with Nikisch, and thereafter rose rapidly through the ranks. He was a répétiteur for Nikisch, an assistant to Ernst von Schuch in Dresden, and then from 1910 to 1917 he conducted at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. He left Russia in 1919, after which he regularly worked with the London Symphony Orchestra; the world premières he conducted with them included the complete Planets Suite by Holst and the revised version of Vaughan Williams's A London Symphony.
In 1920, Coates made his debut with the New York Symphony Orchestra; from 1923 to 1925 he was Music Director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1926 also conducted for the Philharmonic and Symphonic Societies in New York. He returned on occasion to conduct in Europe, where he worked for a season at the Berlin State Opera (1931), gave concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic (1935), and was also engaged as a guest at Covent Garden (1938).
Coates was married twice. His first wife was Madelon Holland, who wrote the libretto of his first opera, Asshurbanipal, in 1910; his second wife was the South African singer Vera de Villiers, who apparently sang under his baton as early as 1934 in London. They married on 20 January 1945, and emigrated to South Africa the following year, settling in the Cape Town suburb of Milnerton. The exact date of Coates's arrival in South Africa is uncertain.
In July 1946, he was still involved in Wigmore Hall concerts in London, though by October he was already conducting in Johannesburg. Coates obviously had not intended the move as simply a retirement to a more temperate climate, for he continued to conduct in his new homeland. He worked first with the Johannesburg Municipal Orchestra, and followed this with various opera and orchestral engagements in Cape Town. His last opera, Van Hunks & the Devil (for which he also wrote the libretto), was composed on a South African topic, and performed for the Van Riebeeck Festival in 1952 (which commemorated the three hundredth anniversary of the first white settlement in South Africa under Jan van Riebeeck). Coates died in Cape Town on 11 December 1953.5

    ACCOMPLISHED oboe and cor anglais player Tamara Coates has arrived in Australia with her husband, Mr Kenneth Hunt, a lecturer in engineering.
    MRS HUNT is a daughter of Albert Coates, distinguished conductor and composer, and she obtained her LRAM Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music as a pianoforte pupil of Harold Craxton before qualifying as a physiotherapist and doing war service in various hospitals.
    SHE studied the oboe under John Croft, principal oboe of the London Symphony Orchestra, and one of its directors. Mrs. Hunt recently gave the first performance, and subsequently the first London performance, of a new oboe concerto by Geoffrey Bush.
    Her husband is also a talented amateur musician. He is mainly interested in the clarinet and piano.33

    SIR BERNARD HEINZE conducted the Victorian Symphony' Orchestra in a most thrilling performance of Tschaikowsky's symphonic fantasia Francesca da Rimini at the second of the 1949 series of free orchestral concerts yesterday afternoon at the Melbourne Town Hall.
    The power and contrasting delicacy he achieved in all sections of the orchestra were thoroughly satisfying. In addition to Thomas White's fine clarinet work, some exceptionally good playing was heard from the brass, flutes, cellos, and basses.
    Tamara Coates, daughter of the renowned British conductor Albert Coates, made a most impressive first appearance as soloist in the first Australian performance of the concerto for oboe and orchestra of Richard Strauss. This work, which Strauss composed at the age of 81, was of a very unusual nature, being scored for quite a small orchestra - in contrast to the large numbers he employed in such youthful symphonic poems as Ein Heldenleben and Also Sprach Zarathustra.
    Playing with unusual beauty of tone, Miss Coates exhibited excellent phrasing and handling of the long passages for the solo instrument. The little known third symphony in D major, written by Schubert when he was only 18, provided a most interesting contrast. Interpreting it with true affection for the composer (a factor which some conductors forget), Sir Bernard brought out much of the youthful loveliness of the symphony, particularly in the adagio and allegretto.
    The concluding work was Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No 1. Richard Chugg's delightful flute playing was heard to advantage in "Morning" and the bassoons featured prominently in "In the Hall of the Mountain King."34

Mrs. Hunt, who is in the Mercy Hospital, is the well-known oboeist, Tamara Coates, daughter of the composer Albert Coates. They have no other children.
    It is a coincidence that the babies should be born on the Australia day holiday. It was on that day, three years ago, that Mr. and Mrs. Hunt arrived in Melbourne from England.     EUGENE GOOSSENS, friend and patron of young Australian composers, honored Melbourne musician John Tallis by appearing in the audience at Friday night's Ballet Guild revival of "The Sentimental Bloke."
    On Saturday night Madame Astra Flack and her Chamber Orchestral Society paid further tribute to Mr. Tallis' excellent instrumental technique by including his "Prelude and Romance for Strings" in the programme at the final subscription concert for 1952, given at Nicholas Hall.
    After the performance, which Madame Flack conducted from memory, John Tallis said how grateful he felt for the time and trouble spent in rehearsal.
    Violinist Dorcas Mcclean scored a well-deserved personal triumph when recalled seven times.
    Augmented by such expert A.B.C. players as Tamara Coates, oboe; Guillaume Fraillon, bass; Gordon Grieve, and Gordon Miller, horns, the Astra Chamber Orchestra gave far and away the best performance since its inception two years ago. Gordon Wesley Miller37

    WHEN she was married, to Pte. L. A. R. Green at the Church of England, Upper Beaconsfield, on Cup Day, Miss Alma Horrigan was attended by four bridesmaids, a dainty flower girl and two little train-bearers. The bridal entourage was a lovely sight, and the wedding was one of the prettiest seen here for some time. The Rev. E. Panelli officiated.
    The bride, who is the only daughter of Mr and Mrs E. H. Horrigan, of Beaconsfield Upper, was given away by her father, and looked very charming in a lovely frock of magnolia satin.
    Two of the bridesmaids, Misses H. Handley and S. Richardson, were frocked in pink taffeta, and the other two, Misses H. Savory and J. Richardson wore a delightful shade of green georgette.
    In a fairy-like frock of white net, Maureen Bannon made a pretty little flower girl. The two train-bearers, Una Stewart and Beryl Green, were dressed alike in blue net.
    The bridegroom, who is the third son of Mr Green and the late Mrs Green, was supported by Dvr. E. Horrigan, brother of the bride, as best man. Mr C. Stewart and Mr S. Clark were groomsmen.
    Whilst the register was being signed Mrs W. G. Noblet sang the appropriate song, “Because,” very sweetly.
    The reception and dance were held at “Salisbury House,” where relatives and friends spent a most enjoyable evening.
    Later the happy couple left for a short honeymoon in Tasmania. They were the recipients of many beautiful presents.15
  • 15 Nov 1941: St. John's Church of England, Upper Beaconsfield, was beautifully decorated with lovely flowers when Miss Alma Horrigan, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Ern. Horrigan, Warrington, Upper Beaconsfield, was married to Mr Len Green, of Launceston, Tasmania.
    The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Panelli. During the signing of the register Mrs A. Noblett sang, accompanied by Miss E. Stenhouse on the organ. Misses H. Hanly, J. Richardson, H. Savury, and S. Richardson were bridesmaids, while Una Stoward and Beryl Green were trainbearers and M. Bannan was flower girl. Mr Ern. Horrigan. Junr., acted as best man and Mr S.   • 6 Oct 1923: WOMAN INJURED IN FIRE. ELDERLY COUPLE'S HOME BURNT. Plucky Rescue by Husband.
    Serious injuries were received by the wife of Mr. Thomas Hunt, of 69 Webb street, Fitzroy, in a fire which broke out at their residence early yesterday morning. Mrs Hunt, who is aged 73 years, is an invalid, and has lost the use of her legs. Awakened by his wife's screams, Mr. Hunt, who is aged 65 years, found that she had managed to crawl into a lumber room at the back of the house, and while there had set fire to her nightdress with the candle she was carrying. Mr. Hunt extinguished the flames on the burning garment, and, with the assistance of his daughter, who lives at the house, dragged his wife out of further danger from the fire, which had already attacked the wood work of the old house. Mr. Hunt, who was at one time captain of the old Moreland Volunteer Fire Brigade, then tried to beat out the flames, but failed, so he and his daughter concentrated their energies on saving Mrs. Hunt.
    In the confusion an alarm was not given, but the watchman in Stone's timber-yard, in Napier street, saw the fire when it had assumed large proportions and telephoned to fire brigade headquarters. A force of 29 men, under acting chief officer J. T. Wilkins, was soon on the scene, but the fire had in the meantime gained too great headway, and, though the brigade speedily extinguished the flames, the house, a brick and iron structure, was gutted. Both house and furniture were uninsured. The house was owned by Mr E. R. Falkiner.
    Mrs Hunt, who was burned about the back, shoulder, and left arm, was taken to the Melbourne Hospital in an ambulance and admitted in a serious condition. Mr. Hunt had his hands badly burned while trying to put out the flames. Margaret Hunt, Margaret Emma Hunt7

A wearied mind at rest.
HUNT.—The Friends of Mr THOMAS HUNT are respectfully invited to follow the remains of his beloved wife, Margaret, to the place of interment the Coburg Cemetery.
The funeral will leave his residence, 69 Webb street, Fitzroy, THIS DAY (Monday) 8th Oc tober, at 3.15 p.m.7

  • 6 Oct 1923: WOMAN INJURED IN FIRE. ELDERLY COUPLE'S HOME BURNT. Plucky Rescue by Husband.
    Serious injuries were received by the wife of Mr. Thomas Hunt, of 69 Webb street, Fitzroy, in a fire which broke out at their residence early yesterday morning. Mrs Hunt, who is aged 73 years, is an invalid, and has lost the use of her legs. Awakened by his wife's screams, Mr. Hunt, who is aged 65 years, found that she had managed to crawl into a lumber room at the back of the house, and while there had set fire to her nightdress with the candle she was carrying. Mr. Hunt extinguished the flames on the burning garment, and, with the assistance of his daughter, who lives at the house, dragged his wife out of further danger from the fire, which had already attacked the wood work of the old house. Mr. Hunt, who was at one time captain of the old Moreland Volunteer Fire Brigade, then tried to beat out the flames, but failed, so he and his daughter concentrated their energies on saving Mrs. Hunt.
    In the confusion an alarm was not given, but the watchman in Stone's timber-yard, in Napier street, saw the fire when it had assumed large proportions and telephoned to fire brigade headquarters. A force of 29 men, under acting chief officer J. T. Wilkins, was soon on the scene, but the fire had in the meantime gained too great headway, and, though the brigade speedily extinguished the flames, the house, a brick and iron structure, was gutted. Both house and furniture were uninsured. The house was owned by Mr E. R. Falkiner.
    Mrs Hunt, who was burned about the back, shoulder, and left arm, was taken to the Melbourne Hospital in an ambulance and admitted in a serious condition. Mr. Hunt had his hands badly burned while trying to put out the flames. Thomas Hunt, Margaret Emma Hunt13
  • 8 Oct 1923: WOMAN DIES FROM BURNS. Mrs. Margaret Hunt, aged 73 years, of Webb street, Fitzroy, who was admitted to the Melbourne Hospital early Friday morning suffering from burns, died late on Friday night.14
