Education* | bt 1884 - 1885 | Scotchies who served in the Boer War have been the subject of decades of detailed research by Geoff Paton (’57), whose grandfather John Scott Paton (SC 1885-93) served in it. Seven Scotch boys were already known to have died in the Boer War, but one who escaped Geoff’s keen eye was Cresswell Herbert Walter. Born on 7 October 1873, he was enrolled at Scotch as Herbert Creswell [sic] Walter in 1884 and left in 1885. Determining his fate was not helped by the Australian War Memorial naming him Crosswell Herbert Walter. Research revealed that he left Scotch to attend Melbourne Grammar School from 1886 to 1888. Grammar’s excellent biographical register Liber Melburniensis (1937) revealed that Walter was killed in the Boer War. He had moved to Strahan, Tasmania, and was a purser on several Union Steam Ship Company boats which serviced Tasmanian ports. By April 1900 he had enlisted and went to South Africa with the rank of sergeant in the Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen’s contingent. Lieutenant Walter was appointed second in command by February 1901. Near Pietersburg on 8 April 1901 (reported by a few sources as 9 April) a lone Boer sniper shot at six Tasmanians, and Walter and a comrade were hit with successive shots. He was buried in the local cemetery, and he is remembered on war memorials at Ballarat, Launceston, Canberra – and at Grammar. Now Scotch knows his fate.4 |

Death-Notice* | 15 Apr 1901 | WALTER.—-On or about the 8th April, killed in action at Pieterburg, in South Africa, Lieut. Cresswell Herbert Walter, son of J. C. Walter, of Malvern grove, Caulfield, aged 27 years.6 |
Anecdote* | 22 Oct 1902 | WALTER, CRESSWELL HERBERT, son of Mr. John C. Walter, of Caulfield, Victoria, was killed in action near Pietersburg, April 9, 1901. The following letter from Lieutenant Walter's father gives in a concise manner some interesting personal details, for which I am very grateful. "Malvern Grove, Caulfield, Victoria, 22nd October, 1902. "Dear Sir, " In answer to your circular requesting information as to my sons life and death I should in the first place pomt out that he can scarcely be called a "Son of Tasmania," as he was born in Caulfield on the 7th October, 1873, and baptised in the name of Cresswell Herbert. Immediately before he enlisted as a private he was engaged as purser in one of the Union Companys steamships, and joined the Tasmanian Corps, being on the spot, rather than run the risk of delay by coming to Melbourne. During the month of drill, etc., before sailing, he was promoted to Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant, and before he died was recommended for a captaincy. "Of his action in the field I have very little to relate, as he seldom wrote particulars. He was a general favourite with officers and men. His "death took place at the taking of the town of Pietersburg in the following manner: " Captain Sale and my son were riding into the town, when the former was picked off by a man in ambush, and fell to the ground. Cresswell immediately dismounted to assist his comrade, and in that duty received his fatal shot from the same rifle. A movement in the long grass led to his discovery, when the man held up his hands saying, * I surrender. ' The men very promptly pomted out that he was too late and riddled him through. The man had evidently presumed on the leniency generally shown, and supposed that whatever he had done he had only to surrender to save his life, but in this case he was disappointed. "I am sending herewith some slips from the papers and a photo, which you will, I hope, return as you promised, as his portrait is in great request, and the slips are valued as matters of reference. I am, dear Sir, yours very truly, "Jno C. Walter." HOW THE TASMANIANS FELL. SHOT BY A SNIPER. London, April 12. " Further details are published of the fighting in which Lieutenants A. A. Sale and C. H. Walter, of the Tasmanian Bushmen's Corps, lost their lives. The Tasmanians formed part of General Plumer's force, which was advancing on Pietersburg, When nearing the town six of their number.7 |
