  • 25 Nov 1911: James possibly arrived on this vessel:
    THE MARATHON
Bringing about 420 passengers, of whom 170 were for Melbourne, the Aberdeen liner Marathon arrived in Hobson's Bay at noon yesterday, from London via Cape Town. For three days and nights prior to arrival the Marathon endeavoured, without suceess, to establish wireless connection with some vessel here, intending to notify her agents that she would reach port yesterday at midday. Finding that his efforts in this direction were unavailing, Captain Collins concluded that there were no vessels equipped with wireless in Melbourne at the time. Whilst Captain Collins's chief anxiety for wireless connection was to report his vessel to headquarters, many of the passengers were concerned to learn the name of the "Cup" winner by means of the ether, a fairly big sweep on the great racing event having been drawn on board. It was not until the Marathon was approaching Cape Otway, on Thursday night, that a "tramp" coastal steamer supplied the name of the winner to the Marathon by the Morse system of telegraphy, the lucky drawer of The Parisian being promptly roused from sleep to learn of his good fortune. Other than those for Melbourne, the Marathon carried 186 passengers for Sydney and 68 for Brisbane. Ordinary weather marked the voyage. Associated with Captain Collins are the following principal officers:- Chief officer, Mr. E. Legge, first officer, Mr. H.C. Allingham; second officer, Mr. W.G. Braund; chief engineer, Mr. J. Walker, second engineer, Mr. T. West; surgeon, Mr. W.R. Rice. Before continuing her voyage to Sydney, the Marathon will land about 2,000 tons of general cargo alongside No. 27 Shed, North Wharf.12

The annual concert of the Ladies' Sewing Guild was held on New Year's Eve. The programme was an excellent one, and the attendance good. Overture, Mrs Kerr; song, Miss Doyle; duet, Mrs Glan Wilson and Mrs Thomas; song, Mr Burse; song, Miss R. Kerr ; song, Miss C. M. Warren; dialogue, Misses Doyle. Moyle, and Mrs Wilson; items by W. Gembrook Glee Club; duet, Misses Ray, Camp, and D. Doyle; song, Mr Burse; song, Miss C. M. Warren; song, Miss Kerr. The items were all good, and many of them encored. During an interval the ice cream stall did excellent business, and afterwards tea and cake at popular prices were obtainable.
Mr Ramage, who always presides at the Guild concerts, occupied the chair, and read the report, which showed that large parcels had been sent to children's charities during the year. The members of the Guild meet once a month at the Mechanics' and prepare the garments sent to various homes. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the performers, after which the National Anthem was sung. Credit is due to Miss Jessie Moyle (the secretary), who organised the function. Mr Tinkham kindly acted as doorkeeper. The balance sheet will be published shortly. Mr McMeekin officiated at the Presbyterian service on Sunday afternoon, and Mr Stanley Camp at the Methodist in the evening. There were good attendances.
Private Harry Warner, who was severely wounded at the front; is expected home shortly. Letters have been received from Privates Holdenson and Thomson, who report "all well."
A concert in aid of hall funds will be held on Easter Monday night. A good programme is being arranged by the secretary, Mr P. Holdenson, jnr., and given good weather there should be a large attendance. A dance will follow, and ice cream will be obtainable at a reasonable price.
In view of the increased motor traffic, the scrub should be cut at the various road bends to avoid accidents. At present it is impossible to see around them.14
