Note*Jan 1884 Yarra 1884 - The 490–tonne Yarra was an iron barque built in Sunderland, England in 1870. On December 1, 1883 the vessel set sail from Lakes Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria under the command of Captain Lewis Schutt. The vessel was bound for Falmouth, England with a cargo of guano when it struck Scott Reef during a cyclone in January 1884. All aboard had to abandon ship and take to a makeshift raft, as the ship’s boats had been washed away during the gale. After 13 days at sea they reached Browse Island some 160 km to the east. The wreck is 70 metres inshore from the edge of Scott Reef and is partly exposed at low tide and clearly visible on low spring tides. The hull is reasonably intact and offers snorkelers and reef walkers a visually attractive site to explore. Location: 14° 02.3' S 121° 46.00' E.5

Death-Notice*15 May 1934 OBITUARY Captain L. J. D. Schutt
Captain L. J. D. Schutt, aged 84 years, who was well known in Victorian shipping circles, died yesterday at his home, in Tovell street, Brighton. Born at Heligoland, Captain Schutt served his apprenticeship on sailing ships and he eventually became master of several of them. He later entered the employ of Huddart Parker Limited, and was master of the Alert. In 1889 he joined the Victorian pilot service and he retired in 1910. Many years ago he and his wife and a son and daughter were on the barque Yarra which was wrecked on the north west coast of Australia. For 14 days they drifted on a raft until they were rescued by a passing steamer. Captain Schutt is survived by a son and two daughters.
The funeral will leave his late residence at 2.30 pm today for the Church of England portion of the Brighton Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by A A Sleight Pty Ltd.14

  • 27 Feb 1884: THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) PALMERSTON, TUESDAY.
    The Swedish schooner Alert arrived last night, bringing Captain L J D Schutt, his wife, and two children, and five of the crew of the wrecked schooner Yarra, 412 tons.
    Captain Schutt reports that the Yarra was driven during a hurricane on to Scotts Reef in the Indian Ocean on the 15th January. He had to abandon the wreck on the 22nd, taking to a raft well provisioned. After six days they made Browse Island where the Alert and Risoe were loading guano. He secured their assistance, and arranged to make a division of the crew both ships agreeing to land their distressed passengers at Port Darwin. Mrs Schutt was confined of a daughter two days after leaving the raft. Both are doing well. The Yarra was owned by the captain and another, and was uninsured at the time of the wreck. She was laden with guano.16
  • 26 May 1888: THE STEAM NAVIGATION BOARD. SUSPENSION OF CAPTAIN SCHUTT'S CERTIFICATE.
    A deputation from the residents of Geelong was introduced to the Steam Navigation Board yesterday morning by Mr J Donaghy and Mr C Andrews, M L A,s for the purpose of asking them to reconsider their decision suspending the certificate of Captain Schutt for six months for having on the 2nd ult, whilst in charge of the s.s. Excelsior, run into a boat near the mouth of the Yarra, by which one of the boats occupants, a boy named Alfred Prosser, was drowned.
    Mr R CLARK read a petition signed by about 500 residents of Geelong, requesting the board to mitigate the punishment, and to favourably take into consideration the fact that Captain Schutt had for a lengthened period successfully and carefully navigated the Yarra, that he had satisfactorily performed his duties, and was held in high esteem by the hundreds of passengers who had occasion to travel to and fro between Mel bourne and Geelong in steamers commanded by him. The accident was in the opinion of the petitioners, mainly caused by the lads jumping out of the boat and leaving her in such a position that a collision was inevitable. They had no doubt that the board were legally justified in suspending Captain Schutt's certificate for six months but they desired to state that they had been informed that the Admiralty regulations under which the suspension was made had practically been a dead let ter for the last 35 years. They considered that a caution or censure would have been sufficient to meet the case under the circumstances and they reminded the board that a suspen sion for a period of half a year was likely to damage all the prospects ot Captain Schutt, and perhaps leave a stigma which would hang to him all his life. They trusted that the board, whilst taking precautions to see that the navigation of the river was properly carried out, would also see their way to re store Captain Schutt his certificate.
    Mr J F Tully said that a similar petition had been signed by the residents of Ballarat, but it unfortunately had not arrived in time for presentation. The petition sub mitted, however, contained the signatures of gentlemen in Geelong of high legal standing, who had a thorough knowledge of law, and who had watched the case very closely. It was also signed by the leading business men of that town. So far as they knew, there had not been one black mark previously recorded against Captain Schutt.
    Mr F Moss stated that it was admitted that Captain Schutt had violated the Admiralty regulations but many other masters were known to have done the same thing without being punished. He had travelled in vessels on the American and European rivers and ports and had never met a more careful master than Captain Schutt.
    Mr C Andrews said that, whilst acknow ledging that the board had acted within their legal rights, there was a strong feeling amongst the residents of Geelong that the punishment had been rather excessive, and they would like to see Captain Schutt reinstated in his position, as they considered him to be a thoroughly competent navigator.
    Captain Schutt had now been a month under suspension, and he trusted that the board would regard that as a sufficient penalty for having violated the regulation.
    Captain Fullarton, the chairman of the board, in replying, said they were glad to learn that Captain Schutt was held in such high esteem, but at the same time he would point out that the board were not treating that master so hard after all, as they had that morning signed a certificate giving him the position of chief officer. The board would give the petition every consideration and would forward their answer to it in writing.
    The deputation then thanked the board and withdrew.17
  • 12 Jun 1888: THE CHARGE AGAINST CAPTAIN SCHUTT.
    The charge against Captain Schutt, of the steamer Excelsior, of the manslaughter of Alfred Prosser, was not gone into at the City Court on Monday. The accused was proceeded against by summons, but by arrangement with the Crown Law department he did not appear, the case being postponed until Wednesday next. A very large number of witnesses have been summoned, and the case will occupy several days.18

  • 26 Sep 1951: Melbourne Pilot Leased Browse Is.
    Browse Island, off the West Australian coast, which it is reported has been occupied by Indonesians, was leased by the late Captain L. J. Schutt, a Port Phillip pilot.
    Mrs. Alex. A. Jamieson, of Blackburn, said yesterday, Captain Schutt, her grandfather, had a long-term lease of the island many years ago.
    Captain Schutt, with his wife and two-year-old daughter, was taking a sailing vessel, the Yarra, to England, 67 years ago, when it was blown off its course and drifted on to Scott's Reef, off the West Australian coast.
    ... raft for 10 days until they were picked up by a cargo vessel.
    On the following day Mrs. Schutt gave birth to a daughter, who is Miss Lottie Schutt, of Brunswick. The elder child later became Mrs. Arthur Anthony, whose husband, the late Captain Anthony, was a well-known Port Phillip pilot of Queenscliff and Willlamstown. Mrs. Jamieson is their eldest child.
    It was during the time of the ship wreck that Captain Schutt discovered Browse Island and found it rich in guano.
    When he retired from the pilot service, he bought a sailing vessel, the Rachel Cohen, and returned to the island.
    Then he formed a company and took out a lease on the island to develop the guano. On one of the expeditions to the island, his son, Mr. Louis Schutt, formerly of Melbourne, and now living in South Perth, was with him.
    Competition from other ventures was too strong for Captain Schutt's company and he had to relinquish his interest in the island deposit.
    Mrs. Jamieson said: "I learned a lot about it by helping my grandfather with the typing in connection with the company."20

My uncle William Henry Care of Boskenna who married Annie Rowe of Trevedran St. Buryan and left for Australia around 1880 and came home for a visit 40 years later showed me a little meadow in Boskenna cliff that he made and fenced around before he left all them years ago. He had a very hard life to start with laying new roads up through the Bush Country. Sleeping under the wagons by night. When he retired was given a big luncheon on his behalf at Melbourne. Have the speech but is too long to write it all down. He was given a seat of honour next to the President who said probably he could never mind such a welcome as extended to Mr W. H. Care. The Silver watch was presented in 1907 with the following inscription: 'Presented to W. H Care for his great work in laying the new road, etc." Then he went into business in Melbourne on the very morning which was 40 years from the very date that he left Cornwall he sold out Lock, Stock and Barrel then he came home for a visit. His wife could not come he had two daughters Annie and Mossie. Father met him at Penzance and he put a white band around his arm so Uncle would know him. Father was only a boy when he left. He would like to stay home but had to go back.1

  • 21 Feb 1918: On Saturday 23rd inst., another farewell gathering takes place, to present Mr W. H. Care with a mark of esteem on leaving the district. Mr Care, who was well known and respected by all who came in contact with him, will, together with Mrs Care, be present on the occassion. For over 20 years he has done faithful work on our public roads under the shire council.49
  • 28 Feb 1918: BEACONSFIELD UPPER. On Saturday night Mr W. H. Care who has for over 20 years been on the public highways in the on employ of the Shire Council and his now relinquished the position, was entertained, along with Mrs Care at a social cup of tea, and presented with an illuminated address, accompanied with something useful in a purse, as a mark of the esteem in which he has been held by the residents.50
  • 1 Mar 1918: Mr W. Care, who was dayman in the Beaconsfield Riding for about twenty years, but who resigned from the position in order to enter into business, was entertained at Upper Beaconsfield the other evening and presented with an illuminated address. The gathering was well attended.51
  • 15 Mar 1918: MR. W. CARE HONORED.
    Mr W. H. Care, who resigned from the post of dayman in the Beaconsfield Riding last month, after about 20 years' service was present at the council meeting last Saturday, and was given a seat of honor near the President (Cr Martin).
    At the midday luncheon he was presented with a cheque as an honorarium from the council, and his health was proposed by the President, who said that he ventured to say that probably the council had never welcomed a guest at their luncheon with greater pleasure than they did Mr Care. He looked upon the occasion as unique, as it was exceptional for councillors to go out of their way to do honor to an employee. However, Mr Care had exalted the name of labor by his excellent conduct, and he merited the best thanks of both the council and the ratepayers for his faithful service during the past 20 years. By his honest work he had saved the ratepayers hundreds of pounds. His good work reflected on the council, and had been helpful to the officers. He had given the council more than a fair deal, and in honoring him they were honoring themselves. He wished Mr Care every prosperity in his new calling.
    Cr a'Beckett supported the remarks of the President.
    Mr J. J. Ahern, clerk of works, said he had heard of Mr Care before he (the speaker) was employed by the council. He was told Mr Care had been presented by the ratepayers with a silver watch, and he expressed a de sire to see both the man and the watch, as it was unusual for the ratepayers to speak well of those who were attending to the roads. He had found Mr Care a skilful and conscientious worker, and he often put in more time on the roads than he was asked to. He was a loyal servant of the council and always gave satisfaction. He was sorry to lose him. He hoped he would meet with success in his new life, and that he would be able to take things much easier than as a dayman.
    Mr Ramage also spoke in high terms of Mr Care. He said he had taken over the roads in Beaconsfield when they were the worst in the shire, but by industrious work he had put them in good order. He and Mr Fennel were two of the best of the shire workers and he doubted whether they would get another good man like Mr Care. He wished him and Mrs Care every prosperity and happiness.
    The toast was received with musical honors.
    Mr Care, in response, said he felt at a loss for words to thank the council for their kindness to him. He had tried to do his duty, he said, and to give the council and the ratepayers a fair deal. It had given him pleasure to work under Mr Ramage and Mr Ahern, and he left the service of the council with regret. However, after 20 years' service it was very gratifying to know that he had given such satisfaction. He thanked the council and officers for their kindness to him dur ing his long service.
    The watch above referred to was a Rotherham. It was presented to Mr Care in 1907 and bore the following inscription:--" Presented to W. H. Care by friends at Upper Beaconsfield."52
