  • 16 Apr 1861: LARCENY.
    John Wilson was informed against for having stolen a saddle and bridle, the property of John Durling.
    The prosecutor is a farmer residing at Berwick, and the prisoner was employed by him down to the 18th March, when he left the service, and took with him the saddle and bridle the subject of this inquiry. On the 20th March he sold these articles to Mr. Gooch, a publican at Cranbourne, for £6 10s. These facts wore proved, and the prosecutor stated that he never authorized the prisoner to take the things away.
    Verdict, "Guilty." Sentence—Nine months' imprisonment, with hard labour.10

  • 6 Feb 1884: INQUEST. ACCIDENTAL DEATH AT RINGWOOD. Mr. Ellingworth, J.P., held a magisterial inquiry at Ringwood on Saturday on the body of an old man named John Gottlieb Scholtz, aged 76 years. Deceased was assisting to load a cart with peastocks on the previous day, and missing his footing, fell from the cart to the ground, alighting on his head, causing instantaneous death. A verdict of accidental death was returned.4
