  • 20 May 1916: PERSONAL. The death occurred at the Base Hospital, St. Kilda road, early yesterday morning of Colonel William George Patterson, late quartermaster-general of the 1st Australian division Australian Imperial forces.
Colonel Patterson was at the landing of the Australian troops at Gallipoli, but his health broke down, and he was invalided to Australia. Colonel Patterson who was born at Castlemaine on September 2, 1862, was the son of Mr. G. Patterson, the well-known auctioneer, and a nephew of the late Sir James Patterson.
He joined the Victorian Mounted Rifles in March, 1891, with the rank of lieutenant.
He became adjutant in 1894, gained his captaincy in 1896, and his majority in 1900.
He was D.A.Q.M.G. for Victoria from 1902 to 1907, and occupied a similar position in South Australia from 1907 to 1910. He became staff officer to the inspector-general in 1910, and was appointed to the administration and instructional staff in 1911, with the rank of lieut.-colonel. In 1902 Major Patterson, as he then was, saw active service in the South African war. In 1900 he visited England, and was for six months attached to the 32nd Brigade 2nd Division Aldershot Army Corps. Subsequently he visited India, and was attached to the 8th Division at Lucknow and the 4th Division at Quetta in the departments of D.A.A.G. and A.Q.M.G. Colonel Patterson was transferred, on the outbreak of war, to the Australian Imperial force, in which as quartermaster-General he did much valuable organising work. On his return to Australia five months ago he was placed on the retired list with the rank of colonel.
He leaves a widow and young family. The funeral, which will be with full military honours, will leave Victoria Barracks for the Melbourne General Cemetery at 3 o'clock this afternoon.8

Newspaper-Articles

  • 16 Mar 1876: Dr. George Clendinning, the coroner for Ballarat, is dead, after lingering for some time under a severe illness, brought on by a strict attention to his official duties. The deceased gentleman, who died this evening, is of a good old Irish family, and is a very old resident of Ballarat, having arrived here some 23 years ago, during the greater part of which time he has held the office of coroner, and has been much respected by all classes of people. His ailment was chronic bronchitis and sciatica, I am told, and he has died at a ripe old age, somewhere about the three-score-and-ten limit of life.4
  • 15 Dec 1876: The interior of St. Paul’s Church is to be embellished by a handsome memorial pulpit. The late Dr Clendinning, who was so long an office-bearer in the church, at one time spoke of a stone pulpit for the church, and his many friends in the denomination have resolved to carry out his idea and erect a pulpit, whose inscription will be—“To the glory of God and in memory of George Clendinning, M.B."
The pulpit will be in bluestone, granite, and marble from a design by Mr H. R. Caselli. Messrs M’Donald have charge of the work.5
  • 20 Jan 1908: CLENDINNING.—On the 18th January at Washington-street, Toorak, Martha Jane Clendinning, aged 86. (Interred at Ballarat.)6
