Agg paid £24.6.0 on account on 24 Mar 1884, leaving a difference of £8.7.9 plus £4.4.0 costs, total £12.11.9. It is not recorded if Goff recovered the remainder of the debt.1

  • 1 May 1889: EMBEZZLEMENT IN THE CROWN SOLICITOR'S OFFICE. ARREST OF MR. W. H. AGG
    William Henry Agg, 49 years of age, pay clerk in the Crown Solicitor's office, was arrested yesterday on a warrant charging him with embezzling £91 3s. 7d. from the Government. Immediately after his arrest the accused was presented before the city bench, and remanded to appear on 8th May, bail being allowed on his own recognisances of £100, and two surieties of like amount.
    The accused, who is a member of a well known family, had been in the civil service for nearly 20 years, for the last 12 months of which he occupied the position of pay clerk in the office of the Crown Solicitor. About a fortnight since the audit commissioners made an inspection of his acounts, as the result of which it was found that a sum of £91 3s. 7rl. had been abstracted from the cash at various times, the defalcations being concealed by false entries in Agg's books. Agg was not informed of the discovery, but it would appear that he gained some inkling of the position, as on Monday he applied for leave of absence. The request was granted without apparent demur, but Plainclothes-Constable Stannage was instructed to keep Agg under surveillance. Yesterday the constable followed Agg from his residence, 21 Raleigh-street, Windsor, to the local railway station, where the accused who knew Stannage personally, challenged him with having been told off by the Crown Law department to watch him. Stannage gave an evasive reply, and the accused then said, "I know my books are wrong ; I haven't got the money, and I don't care what becomes of me." He and Stannage went together to the Crown Law department, and finally Detective Duncan, who has charge of the case, produced a warrant for his arrest. So far as is known the amount stated on the warrant represents the whole of the defalcations. The prisoner is a married man with two sons.3
