(Mrs. Carrott has always been a worker for anything worthwhile in the district and was a foundation member of the Mothers’ Club. Friends met at her home to make the presentation, and Mrs. G. Rae and Mrs. C. C. Bailey both thanked Mrs. Carrott for the interest she had always displayed in district affairs.7

  • 15 Apr 1869: Fatal Accident.—Mr Candler held an inquest Wednesday, at Spring Vale, Mulgrave, on the body of Louis Champion, who was accidentally killed on the 13th inst. The deceased was a carrier, and lived at Berwick.
    On the morning of the 12th inst., Mr George Brown, storekeeper, at Berwick, was riding along the Dandenong road, towards Melbourne, and, when close to the Spring Vale Hotel, observed a dray "tipped over" and a man's legs sticking out from under. Assistance was get, and, on the dray being removed, the deceased was found lying on his side, with the back portion of the dray pressing upon him. Two horses were tied to the dray, with their heads pulled up by the tilting of the shafts, and it was surmised they had thrown up the dray while feeding from a bag tied across the shaft. The dray carried a load of about a ton in weight, and would be very easily disbalanced. The medical evidence showed that death resulted from fracture of the ribs and compression of the heart, and a verdict to that effect was recorded.5
