    WITH shocking, suddenness the death occurred on Dec. 31st of Mr Michael Joseph McMahon, of Emerald. Deceased, who was 74 years old, was on a visit to Minyip when he was taken ill.
    Before coming to Emerald some years ago, he carried on wheat growing on a Mallee farm at Kiamal, where he still retained property interests up to the time of his death. Soon after he took up residence at Emerald he lost everything in the bush-fires.
    He is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters—Michael, William, Norah (Mrs Phillips), Cornelius, and Margaret (Mrs Cottrell). He was pre-deceased by his first wife.6

I remember your writing some time ago asking permission for a road through my land, and think some sort of permission was made, but I also think that I went up to the Lands Dept to arrange this, to enquire whether they would reduce my land payments by the area of road which I was giving up. It is about 1 3/4 acres.
I also heard that you had abandoned the idea for making the road, however if you still intend making it I think there is no objection, although I should prefer you getting the adjoining owner to go half as the value of land has increased so much. I also forwarded Mr Graham some time ago a statement of charge for your portion of fencing, 3.11.0. Please see that fence is put up now.

  • 19 Apr 1893: On April morning, and one that might have been born in "that dear old land of England," we had agreed to make a start from my friend's house at 9 a.m., but the weather was in a wavering frame of mind and looked as if it would take until the afternoon to decide what it was going to do. Finally, about eleven o'clock it gave us a little encouragement ; quickly all mounted and the start was made. Having passed the post office and secured our letters and papers, we take the road which leads by groves of pine until "Good Rest" is reached, leaving en route the store and residence of Mr. Schlipalius. Here we turn to the left off the Main road, and, taking a track through the bush, arrive shortly at the "Mountain Home" (and aptly so named) of Mr. Hall, the late Government Whip. Perched on the top of a high hill; with great granite boulders lying around and the world spread out like a map far below it, this modest little highland retreat has a site which in the old world would have been appropriated by some grey old baronial castle, tenanted by a bold bad baron or his descendant, with a history of repine and murder dating beyond the Norman Conquest. The painter, the poet, and the composer would have con spired to throw a halo round those ancient cattle lifters and their not too refined human surroundings, until the whole country side would be teeming with romantic legend and not a mountain top or fern gully but would be the scene of some thrilling deed of daring, some tear-compelling episode of love or some hair raising and cheek-blanching ghost story, intimately connected with a ghastly tragedy "away back" in those good old days of old. But as it is, we are a matter of fact people whose history dates from yesterday, and although there being as Josh Billings sapiently remarked "a great deal of human natur in man," our black predecessors could, in the poetic language of "poker," no doubt "see" the old barons, and even "go one better" as regards most of their performances ; unfortunately no record accessible to the white man was kept of these, and the blackfellow was in such a hurry (or we will, out of consideration for the feelings of the pioneer, put it so), to shuffle off this mortal coil, that no opportunity was given to the indefatigable interviewer of the modern society journal to gain an insight into the sayings and doings and a social scandal of the upper crust amongst these real original lords of the soil. However, deprived as we must resign ourselves to be of the glamour lent by such old associations to even the most homely scene, there is still enough charm left in the view to make it worth travelling many miles to look upon.10
  • 10 May 1900: HALL V HALL.
    Juliet May Hall, of Swanston street, Melbourne petitioned for the dissolution of her marriage with George Wilson Hall, of England, but formerly of Victoria, on the grounds of desertion and misconduct.
    Mr Woolf who appeared for the petitioner, said that the parties were married on May 1, 1885, according to the rites of the Wesleyan Church. They lived together as man and wife until early in May, 1891, when petitioner discovered that her husband was suffering from a serious complaint. She then offered to live in the same house and to take care of their child, but respondent refused to agree to the arrangement. The petitioner then left and went to Beaconsfield, where she remained for 14 months, during which time she received no communication from her husband. She learned that he had gone to England, and in March, 1893, followed him thither, having been informed that he was dangerously ill, and because she wanted to see that before dying he should make some provision for his child. She saw him in England, but he did not offer her a home. After a short stay in England they returned to Victoria by the same boat, though not together, and on arrival here separated again immediately. The respondent at one time represented Shepparton in the Legislative Assembly, and subsequently stood for the East Bourke Boroughs seat but was unsuccessful. In January or February, 1898, he left the colony, and petitioner had not since heard of him nor from him.
    Evidence was called in support of the allegations in the petition.

Australian Dictionary of Biography

George Wilson Hall (1836-1916), trade unionist, journalist and politician, was born at Brighton, England, where his father was an agent for the British and Foreign Bible Society. He arrived in Melbourne in 1853 and later became a compositor. In 1873 he was secretary of the Melbourne Typographical Society and editor of its Australasian Typographical Journal. Unable to win worthwhile support and continually involved in petty disputes with employers, the society tried to improve its bargaining power through collective action with other workers. In July 1874 Hall called an inaugural meeting of the Trades and Labor Council. Though it failed to win major objectives and by 1875 was almost defunct, Hall as its secretary gained some prominence in October by organizing a public meeting to protest against the gaoling of two tanners at Castlemaine. He also seconded a motion by Thomas Bent which called for a system of arbitration. The government seemed prepared to discuss proposals for courts of conciliation but nothing was achieved.
In 1878 Hall left his union post to become editor-proprietor of the Mansfield Guardian. A few months later when the Kelly gang shot three police from Mansfield, Hall published a pamphlet, The Kelly Gang or The Outlaws of the Wombat Ranges (Mansfield, 1879). Next year he moved to Benalla and covered the capture of the Kellys at Glenrowan for the Melbourne Argus and his own Benalla Standard. Police handling of the Kellys led Hall to agitate for an inquiry into the police force which in 1881 was set up with Hall as a commissioner.
Hall was elected for the Moira seat in the Legislative Assembly in July 1880. He had long been concerned at the prevalence of sweating in the printing industry and gave influential support to the printers' public campaign for factory reform. In May 1883, at the request of William Smith, Hall joined the enlarged royal commission on shop employees and with officials of the Typographical Society lobbied for new legislation. Although active in parliament Hall held no portfolio but was a whip for the Service-Berry, Munro and Shiels ministries. He was also a staunch advocate for temperance.
From about 1886 Hall was a leader of the country section of the Liberal-protectionists in the Deakin-Gillies coalition. In 1887-88 Hall held that more was to be gained by staying with the government than by opposition but at the 1889 election he announced his breakaway and, backed by the Victorian Farmers' Protection Association, won the new seat of Shepparton and Euroa. Although he did not always maintain an independent position he was prominent in exacting budgetary concessions from the government in 1889 on behalf of farmers. He lost his seat in 1891 and went on an official lecture tour of England to attract migrants to Victoria. After attempting in vain to re-enter parliament in 1894 and 1897 he retired from public life. He was married first to Marian Burton, second to Mary Juliet Worthington and third to Mary Hughes. He died in Melbourne on 21 September 1916 aged 80, survived by his widow and by three sons of the first marriage; two children of the second marriage predeceased him.11

It was his father, George Graham, who wrote to the Lands Department to kindly accept his son's application which had been pegged out by G. W. Hall, who had a selection west of this block. Graham fenced his land and seeded some grass, but did not make any further improvements.3 
(Witness) Land-Note18 Sep 1888 My dear Sir, I must apologize for not answering your letter before this but my absence from the Colony must be my excuse.
I remember your writing some time ago asking permission for a road through my land, and think some sort of permission was made, but I also think that I went up to the Lands Dept to arrange this, to enquire whether they would reduce my land payments by the area of road which I was giving up. It is about 1 3/4 acres.
I also heard that you had abandoned the idea for making the road, however if you still intend making it I think there is no objection, although I should prefer you getting the adjoining owner to go half as the value of land has increased so much. I also forwarded Mr Graham some time ago a statement of charge for your portion of fencing, 3.11.0. Please see that fence is put up now.

  • 5 Sep 1941: MR. G. GRAHAM. The funeral to the Wunghnu Cemetery took place on Sunday of Mr. George Graham, who died on Saturday, after a long illness, at the age of 74. Deceased was a pupil at the first Wunghnu school to be conducted and since then has resided on his farm about three miles from the township. He was a son of the late Mr. George Graham. M.L.A., and is survived by his wife (formerly Miss B. Loftus) and one son, Alan. Over 35 cars followed the cortege and the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Kemp, Wunghnu Methodist minister.6
