Newspaper-Articles

  • 2 Jun 1932: FAREWELL SOCIAL PRESENTATION TO REV. CADWALLADER JONES.
Sincere regret was felt in and around Berwick when it became known that the Rev. Jones, the Presbyterian minister at Berwick, intended to retire from active ministry.
Rev. Jones was a very popular preacher and citizen of Berwick, and during his sojourn of four years there he had endeared himself to his congregation.
On Monday night, May 30, the congregation of the Berwick church tendered the Rev. and Mrs. Jones a social in the School Hall. The hall and stage were tastefully decorated, and the building was packed.
Rev. J. Meers, of Dandenong, occupied the chair, and after the Doxology and prayer, referred to the genuine regret that was felt when Rev. Jones signified his intention of ceasing active work. Rev. Jones was held in the highest esteem throughout the district, and was a tower of strength in the Flinders Presbytery, of which he was the clerk. He was very pleased to be able to announce that they were, not losing that help in the Presbytery as Rev. Jones was still occupying the post of clerk, and remaining a member and his brother ministers were gratified to think they would still have his help and guidance.
The chairman referred to the Rev. Jones’s sterling qualities as a preacher; he also eulogised Mrs. Jones for her hospitality and help to her husband in his ministry. He was honored to be present and presiding at this gathering, and he wished the Rev. and-Mrs. Jones the best of everything in their retirement (Applause).
Mr. Bishop, representing the Kirk Session, expressed regret at the Rev. Jones’ departure. During his own connection with the church for the past 12 years he felt that the spiritual life had never been as high. Mrs. Jones had been always courteous and kindly, and had inspired and helped her husband. (Applause).
Mr. W. R. Angus, representing the Board of Management, added his quota to the others. He said he felt it a great privilege to have been associated with the Rev. Jones at the meetings of the Board; he had always commanded the respect and affection of his officers. (Applause).
Mr. T. C. Whiteside, representing the congregation, spoke of the wonderful help the congregation has received from their minister’s sermons. They came seeking, and went away satisfied. He thought that no previous minister had so ably filled the pulpit; he wished both Mr. and Mrs. Jones happiness in their new home. (Applause).
Mr. H. K. Lamb, superintendent, of the Sunday school, spoke for the scholars and the young people of the church. Mr. Lamb said that their minister had endeared himself to all the scholars, and especially the young ladies of the congregation; his place would be hard to fill. He joined with the others in best wishes, for Mr. and Mrs. Jones. (Applause).
Rev. J. T. Robertson, who is an ex-Moderartor of the Presbyterian Church in Victoria, said how he had been delighted to sit under the Rev. Jones for the past 20 months in Berwick. He said that as a preacher his sermons were excellent, and showed deep thought, and his whole heart and soul was in his preaching. (Applause) .
Mr. L. W. Anderson spoke in eulogistic terms of both Rev. and Mrs. Jones. He had the honor of presenting to the Rev. Jones a handsome, leather easy chair, and to Mrs. Jones, an electric radiator. He handed these gifts to them both with the assurance that accompanying them was the affection and love of the whole congregation. (Continued applause).
Dr. P. V. Langmore, in the unavoidable absence of the Church of England minister (Rev. Rowle), spoke on behalf of the Church of England’s congregation. He had a great respect for the Rev. and Mrs. Jones, whom he had met on many occasions in his profession, and he very much regretted their departure from Berwick.
He wished them well in Canterbury, in their retirement. (Applause).
Rev. Jones, in rising to respond, was heartily applauded. He traversed his ministry from its inception, 44 years ago, adding that he, did not expect that he was, going to stop preaching altogether, but he had never had a spell, and had been warned several times by his medical advisers to take a rest. He was very gratified to hear the kind remarks of the speakers, though he felt they had magnified his good points, and shut their eyes to his bad ones. He had revelled always in preaching Christ Jesus; his aim had been to impart Gospel knowledge fearlessly, and if he had comforted people, and helped them, he was satisfied. He thanked them for the beautiful presents on behalf of Mrs. Jones and himself. He expected to be back preaching to them at some future date, and would be very delighted to renew old acquaintances. (Applause).
The speeches were interspersed with songs by Misses Richardson and Messrs. Lamb and Angus, and recitations by Miss V. Richardson and Mr. L. W. Anderson. The ladies handed around a tasteful and dainty supper, which was greatly enjoyed.8
  • 15 Feb 1934: CRANBOURNE. The Rev. Cadwallader Jones, formerly Presbyterian minister of Berwick, has been appointed chaplain to the Melbourne gaols and hospitals, during tlie absence of the Rev. W. L. Fenton, who expects to be away for twelve months, on a visit overseas.
The Rev. C. Jones is clerk of the Presbytery of Flinders.9
  • 2 Jun 1948: Berwick Minister’s £7739 Estate
£7,739 estate was left by the late Rev. Cadwallader Jones, formerly of The Manse, Berwick, and Thomas St., East Brighton.10
