    E ROW and CO. will sell by public auction, at their sale rooms, Bourke street, on Wednesday, 22nd inst., immediately after the sale of the Paring Yullock and Forest Cattle Stations, unless previously disposed of by private contract, The Mount Misery Station, situate on the Cardina Creek, in the vicinity of the Gipps Land Road, calculated to depasture 300 head cattle. There are now running thereon about 100 head mixed cattle, above twelve months' old, all under that age (50) given in.
    The improvements consist of two huts and dairy, small cultivation and grass paddocks, enclosed with a substantial three rail fence.

  • 28 Nov 1871: POWER.—On the 27th inst., at Calitiri, Hawthorn, Mary Sophia, the wife of Thomas Herbert Power, aged 68 years.18
  • 4 Dec 1873: Mr. Thomas Herbert Power, one of the few remaining colonists whose arrival in Victoria dates before 1840, died at his residence, Hawthorn, on the 28th November, from inflammation of the stomach and bowels. In the early days of the colony, when Melbourne was a small village. Mr. Power carried on business with success. His fortunes increased with the growth of the colony, and for many years before his death he had retired from commercial life, having realised a handsome fortune by steady application to business. Mr. Power represented the Southern Province in the Legislative Council from 1856 till 1864, when he gave place to Mr. W. H. Pettett. Two sons of the deceased gentlemen are leading members of the firm of Powers and Rutherford in Melbourne, while a third is engaged in pastoral pursuits in Gippsland.19
  • 30 Apr 1874: SALE OF SUBURBAN PROPERTY.
    An important sale took place this day at the rooms of Messrs. C.J. and T. Ham, by order of the executors of the late Thomas Herbert Power. The cottages on Burwood road were purchased by Mr. Hyslop for £530. The Dandenong Estate, comprising 1816 acres was bought by Mr. Richard Colclough for £7266. 153 acres at Boroondara were purchased by Dr. Gunst for £2907. Three lots at Boroondara, Doncaster, Heidelberg, fell to Mr. Shelton for £2827 8s. Four lots in the same locality were bought by Mr. W. Smith for £3101 8s. Two lots, near the property of Mr. Keogh, Wore, purchased by Mr. G. P. Smith, for £1213 15s. Mr. David Mitchell bought ninety-eight acres, at Nunawading, for £1280 10s, as well as 103 acres fronting Ewart's road, for £1216 2s 6d. There were passed in ten acres at Hawthorn, with frontage to the Yarra ; four acres, comprising the nursery gardens, and 143 acres at Nunawading. Two building sites on Morang road were not put up. The attendance was very large, and competition brisk.20
  • 11 Jan 1934: THE LATE T. P. POWER to THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS
    Sir,—The death of Mr. Thomas Philip Power severs a link with the first pioneer of Hawthorn. John Gardiner is generally associated with the Prahran and Gardiner district but Mr. T. H. Power settled on the Yarra close to the centre of old Hawthorn. Elgar's survey, which comprised most of Boroondara, consisting of 5000 acres taken up by Elgar, a West India merchant at £1 an acre was sold in 1853 to Mr. T. P. Power and two others for 15 guineas an acre. The Power family had then been settled for several years in its Hawthorn home, Clan-Yr-Avon which is still standing. There the late Mr. T. P.   • 12 Jan 1934: THE LATE T. P. POWER TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS
    I Sir,-Surely Mr. Schuchard does not claim that Mr. T. H. Power was the first pioneer of Hawthorn. Mr. Power did not arrive in Port Phillip until well on in 1838. On July 1 he announced his intention to open an auctioneering and general agency business, and on September 16 he did open an auction-room adjoining Dr. Barry Cotter's shop in Queen street. John Gardiner established his home in Hawthorn on the present site of the Scotch College in December, 1838, and he was the first resident of Hawthorn. His home was for some years the centre of the intellectual society of Melbourne. There were several other residents in Hawthorn before Power.
    Elgar's survey was not made until 1841, and It did not include any portion of the present city of Hawthorn. Mr. Power's early purchases from the Crown were 1,145 acres on the Merri Creek in August, 1840, at 13/6 an acre, and in the following month two sections, or 1,280 acres at Kalkallo (Donnybrook) at 12/.   • 13 Jan 1934: THE LATE T. P. POWER. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS
    Sir,-I am well aware of the facts of Mr. Power's life as Mr. Kenyon states them. Gardiner's claim to be the pioneer of the whole district east of the Yarra is incontrovertible. My contention is that Power was the pioneer of Hawthorn proper in the sense of association with its development as a municipality. His first purchase of Crown land in the district was of block No. 17 of the Crown allotment on section 6, purchased on March 11, 1846, and his residence, Craig-Yr-Avon, was built on that block. Sir James Palmer purchased blocks 19, 20, and 21 on the other-or westerly-side of Yarra street from Power, and built Burwood about the same time. As Mr. Kenyon records in his valuable record of early settlement, "The Pioneer Pastoralists of Port Phillip," Power also acquired Mount Misery Station, near Berwick, in 1841, and Smith and Corrigan in their "History of Hawthorn" say that he used to boil down the cattle from that property at his Hawthorn home, where remains of the plant still survive. Mr. Power took a leading part in the establishment and administration of the municipality-two years later the borough of Hawthorn. Elgar's survey lay east of Burke road between the Yarra on the north and Canterbury road (then Delaneys road) on the south. My mention of it was to point to the extent of his property in the immediate district. I know of no record of any houses built on the Crown lands comprising the present City of Hawthorn before Power's. Residents of the district holding land under the £10 squatting lease of the year before subdivision there undoubtedly were—Hodgson a little farther up the river was one—but they could hardly count in my sense of the term, as pioneers of Hawthorn proper.

  • 14 Mar 1883: We regret having to record the death of of Mr Michael Reedy at the ripe old age of seventy-seven years. Mr. Reedy was a colonist of forty-two years standing, having landed in 1841. The greater portion of his colonial life was spent in the Dandenong district, where he was well known, and universally respected by all classes. He was a man of unblemished character, had a genial disposition, was hospitable and benevolent, a kind and in dulgent husband and parent, a true friend and christian, a good neighbour, and in short, he was one of that "good old sort" who are fast passing away from amongst us, and whose place will not be easily supplied.4

Death-Notice*9 Oct 1873 KEYS.—On the 8th inst., at Keysborough, George Keys, sen., aged 81 years. His end was peace.7 
Death-Notice9 Oct 1873 THE Friends of the late GEORGE KEYS, Sen., of Keysborough are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, Brighton Cemetery.
The funeral to move from his late residence, Keysborough, on Friday, 10th inst., at 11 o'clock a.m., passing Cheltenham at 2 o'clock.8
