    ELIZABETH PETHERBRIDGE v PUNCHARD
AFFILIATION CASE.—Mr. Sirr for the complainant, Mr. Lamont for the defendant.
Mr. Sirr applied for a postponement, in consequence of the unavoidable absence of a material witness.
Mr. Lamont urged that the paternity of the child was not denied, but an agreement had been entered into between defendant and complainant, discharging defendant from all further demands.
Mr. Sirr replied that the witnesss was Dr. Wills, the father of the late explorer, from whom a letter had been received, which Mr. Sirr read, and was to the effect that his evidence would have been damaging to the defendant had he been able to attend.
Mr. Lamont produced an agreement signed by defendant and complainant, with Dr. Wills' signature, which was to the effect that the payment of £40 should be in lieu of all further demands, and argued that if the agreement was, as Mr. Sirr alleged, null and void, the case was not then for their Worship to decide, but must be adjudicated in another court.
Mr. Sirr, again addressing the Bench, contended that the agreement was a fraudulent one and therefore prayed for a remand.
Mr Lament said that if their Worships decided in favor of postponement costs, should be allowed, for the case had already been heard at the Ballarat Court.
Mr. Sirr replied that to allow costs for seducing a woman was absurd.
The Bench adjourned the case to the 13th January.
[The Court was crowded to hear the case. Defendant was not present, but the complainant —a most lady-like looking person—sat in the body of the Court with the child, a fine girl about two years of age.] Elizabeth Petherbridge, John Bussell Punchard23

  • 30 Mar 1888: FASHIONABLE WEDDING.
The last fashionable wedding of the season was celebrated on Tuesday, the 24th inst., at All Saints' Church, the contracting patties being Mr James Mills, M.H.R., and Miss Sadie Gertrude Fosbery, and the' officiating clergyman the Rev. A. R. Fitchett. ....
The bridal dress and trousseau were made by Miss Petherbridge, of the D.I.C. and the bridesmaids' dresses in the several other leading houses. As was stated in last issue, all the vessels, not only in Dunedin and Port Chalmers harbours, but also in that of Wellington, were decorated with bunting, the Dunedin wharf presenting an exceedingly gay appearance. In addition to those at the church door many hundreds of people waited in the vicinity of Dr Maunsell's residence for the purpose of seeing the bridal party depart for the church. Altogether the affair created a greater stir than any similar social event I have yet witnessed in Dunedin.29
  • 25 Jun 1888: DUNEDIN EXHIBITS FOR MELBOURNE.
.... A handsome dinner dress, made by Miss Petherbridge, of the D.I.C., will also form one of the Dunedin exhibits at the Melbourne Exhibition. The material is white satin, the trimmings being of gold beads skilfully worked so as to represent flowers, leaves, birds, and insects. The design is Miss Petherbridge's.30
  • 6 Jul 1888: ALICE'S LETTER TO HER READERS.
There was quite a large crowd of visitors at the D.I.C. on Saturday, June 23, toget a peep at the dress Miss Petherbridge has sent away to the Melbourne Exhibition. It was, I think, the loveliest dress that Dunedin has ever seen, and was fit for a princess— indeed, when I saw it I thought that it would well suit the graceful figure of her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales. It is, I understand, the only costume that New Zealand will furnish for the Melbourne Exhibition, and a glass show case has been procured, which is in itself a fine piece of work, and a local production into the bargain. It is of black and gold, and should set off to advantage the delicate cream and gold of the dress. The wax figure upon which the dress will be exhibited has been made specially at the Melbourne Waxworks. Indeed, Miss Petherbridge has spared no expense to make her enterprise a success, the bare cost being quite £100, to say nothing of the six months' evening labour. It is thought by many that the exhibit is at the cost of the D.I.C, but this is not the case, it being purely a private enterprise of Miss Petherbridge, and carried out at her own expense, the design being entirely her own. I am sure I wish her every success of her venture.
Now to give my readers a dim idea of the beautiful creation, which really must be seen to be appreciated. An artist's brush is needed instead of pen and ink to impart the delicate tint of the cream, the gleam of the gold, and the soft folds of the lovely lace. It is a dinner gown of cream duchess satin but such satin, so rich and yet so soft! It is made in the new Directoire style, which is a short-waisted bodice, at least short-waisted in the vest, with a coat like-bodice over. The bodice is square cut in front, with a V at the back, the Directoire frontf filled in with an under vest of lace and ribbon, alternate stripes of lace and cream ribbon, the ribbon being embroidered with tiny gold pendants. The satin bodice is embroidered with beautiful gold beads, in designs of ferns butterflies, and birds. The train falls from the left shoulder, to which it is attached by crea Side by side with such a lovely gown it would be a little out of place to mention ordinary dresses; the ladies would think I wanted to draw comparisons — ordinary mortals cannot be so dressed.31

  • 9 Oct 1888: MELBOURNE LETTER. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Melbourne, September 23rd. We have been blessed lately with some delightful weather, which has helped to increase the attendance at the Large Shop, as the Centennial Exhibition is called.
    ....
Miss Petherbridge, of Dunedin, has on view a very rich dinner gown, of cream duchess satin and chantilly lace, entirely designed by herself. The design being drawn and embroidered by hand. It took six months to complete, being made after business hours.33
  • 22 Mar 1889: MESSRS. G. STIRLING AND SONS' WINTER SHOW.
One of the most striking shows of the winter season was that of Messrs. G. Stirling and Sons' whose extensive establishment is situated at the corner of Bridge-road and Church-street, Richmond.
    ....
AMONGST some of the most effective tea-gowns, I saw one in electric blue plush, with salmon pink surah front, a golden brown plush with a buttercup liberty silk front, and a vieux rose cashmere trimmed with ribbons, made after the empire style. A heliotrope liberty silk had a watteau plested black and a draped front of valenciennes lace, caught up with bows of heliotrope ribbon. The dinner gowns and visiting dresses at Messrs. Stirling and Sons were made neatly of the new amure silk and faille, made with long draperies. One model was in the new shade of grey faille and brocatelle. Another silk gown was in golden brown, with panels of figured brocatelle and moire, directoire bodice, with lappels and vest of the figured material. A mignonette green silk was trimmed with a figured silk, which in ...d were of a light shade. The dressmaking department is, I may mention, under the direction of Miss Petherbridge, late of Collins-street, and this fact should be quite a sufficient guarantee that good style and a perfect fit are the distinguished features of this department. The first lovely gown which Miss Petherbridge showed me was in green Amazon cloth with a black silk moire front, a full vest of green velvet and moire lapelles. The pockets and large buttons were of moire, whilst the lapelles and pockets were brightened by the addition of steel buttons., Another green dress was trimmed with beaver, and a third with the Egyptian trimmed embroidery. A very stylish gown trimmed with Egyptian embroidery on white cloth was in terra cotta cloth. A gown in the new shade of Pompeian rod was trimmed round the hem of the skirt with white applique on white cloth. The skirt was very slightly draped and trimmed on the bodice with narrow applique and pearl buttons. There were a numbor of othur costumes all of which bore some special feature—showing the same good taste and style for which Miss Petherbridge has long been noted amongst fashionable dressers.

  • 21 Jun 1889: Fashion Notes. By HUMMING BIRD
As the ball season may fairly be considered to have started, a number of very elegant gowns have been prepared at the principal dressmakers. Amongst these the establishment of Messrs. Stirling and Sons, Richmond, under the direction of Miss Petherbridge, is noted for the confection of elegant ball costumes.
Amongst some which were shown last week I especially admired a debutante's empire dress, consisting of white illusion tulle over white satin slip. The tulle draperies were ornamented with three rows of silver tinsel, and there was on each side a loose panel of moire, trimmed all round with deep silver bullion fringe. An empire sash of moire, finished off with silver tassels, completed one side, and the other a fawn drapery trimmed with three rows of tinsel. The moire bodice was trimmed with cross draperies of tulle, edged with the silver fringe and caught up on one shoulder a bunch of tassels to match. To be worn with this gown was a silver filagree band round the throat, a white ribbon and osprey ornament for the hair, and white undressed kid gloves. Another very pretty dress consisted of a front of cream unmounted roses set on tulle through which ran a gold thread. The side panels were of cream moire, ornamented with pearl and gold pendants. The back of the skirt was of tulle, with a broad moire ribbon sash ; bodice of moire with a berthé of unmounted roses. With this costume was worn a string of pearls round the throat, a gold and tulle butterfly for the hair, and a very light shade of biscuit-colourcd gloves. A perfect empire dress was made in very beautiful amber embroidered pongee silk, the draperies being most artistically arranged, and were caught up on the shoulder by a handsome gold crescent. There were also a number of other very charming costumes in hand in which Miss Petherbridge displayed much taste and ingenuity, and which in every instance fully maintained the high standard of excellence always shown in the dressmaking department of Messrs. Stirling and Sons.35
