Anecdote* | May 2019 | McCOUBRIE Neither Robin or I recognise the subject of the painting of the small ‘loo’ type building ... My memories of the outdoor loo belonging to my grandparents house was that it was weatherboards, and the fact that toilet paper was squares of newspaper with a hole in the corner where string was threaded through so as to hang it on a nail on the wall. My grandfather ran the farm where he milked cows by hand. His milking shed consisted of two bays and the most cows he milked were four. Cream was delivered to the Dandenong Butter Factory every Tuesday. The ‘top’ paddock - the one beside the Officer Hall, was the hay paddock. The hay shed was the end shed in the painting with the sheds under the Cypress trees, and the taller side is the old sheds of my grandparents, which used as hay, chook and feed sheds. Robin remembers he had the job of feeding the chooks. The food was always kept in the same place, except at one stage there was a vermin problem, the food was moved around and he went in, put his hand in the chook feed bin and came out with a rat trap attached to his fingers. The Cypress trees in the painting were very large and proud and underneath Pop housed his many bee-hives. Although this area was fenced, Robin forced the gate open only to come out screaming as the bees attacked him. It took my mother and grandmother a long time to get all the stings out from his face and arms. He never did that again! Garage and Lean-to. My grandfather spent many hours tinkering around in this shed. It housed a Model A Ford, which we all loaded into of a Tuesday to go to the Dandenong Market for the weeks’ supplies and to take the cream to the Butter Factory. He loved buying stuff at the auction section. One time he came home with 144 dozen bike patches and legend has it he used only 1. I loved to ‘walk around’ in the Ford between the front and back seats while we were travelling. The lean-to is where he kept all his ‘junk’. There were many stories of these days about chatting to all those who passed by including the baker, the butcher, the grocery man, the iceman and the milkman. JUDY.6 |
