  • 4 Nov 1930: BEACONSFIELD.—Beaconsfield Upper was en fete on Saturday afternoon, the occasion being the official opening of Mr. C. Ford's ''Lakes" golf-links. A large gathering assembled at the first tee, where the links were formally declared open by Mr. W. C. Willmott. Many well-known players were present, and a series of interesting matches were played. A fine club house on the highest portion of the links commands a wonderful panorama of mountain scenery, and nine full-length links of easy grades provide an endless series of scenic vistas, not to be surpassed so near Melbourne. The visitors were unanimous in their praise of the work accomplished by Mr. Ford, the originator of the project.25
  • 21 Feb 1931: PRACTICAL HELP. NEWPORT UNEMPLOYED OBTAIN WORK FOR WINTER.
At a meeting of local, unemployed recently, a call was made for volunteers to obtain firewood in the country for their families. Of the 750 on the list, there was a response of 50 men, but the matter was then left in abeyance. Mr. J. Delehene, of Newport, and other unemployed of Newport, decided to endeavour to put the proposal into practical operation. Introduced by Mr. Ladd, they waited on Mr. Bunker of the State relief committee, who co- operated, and sent them to Mr. Ford (one of the pioneers of Altona), who now owns a large, timbered area at Upper Beaconsfield. A lady residing in Melbourne-road, Newport, offered the use of her car, and another lady supplied four gallons of petrol. The party set off and made arrangements to cut the timber, and obtain it without any restric tions. Then Mr. O. Chanter offered to take the expedition of 10 men to fell and cut the wood into 8ft. lengths. Cr. Thorburn, of the Shell Co., co-operated by loaning three 5-ton trucks to cart the wood to Newport, where the 144 tons was brought to Mr. Ladd's pad dock, and cut into lengths, the saw and power being donated by Mr. Ladd, who also provided a lorry and harness for its delivery to the various homes. Mr. Delehene, as the originator of this scheme, with his confreres, is grateful for the practical help thus given.26
  • 27 Mar 1931: With Respect to Firewood-a Great Winter Necessity.-Some municipalities have very wisely foreseen the necessity for preparing for the provision of firewood for the winter months. For example, the Brunswick Relief Committee has arranged to secure supplies from Macedon, and vol unteers have come forward to cut the wood. Those men, who are supplied with food by the Brunswick Committee, remain in the forest camp for a fortnight, when another batch of volunteers is sent out.
Mr. Ford, of Upper Beaconsfield, has made available large quantities of firewood, from which some Councils are obtaining supplies gratis by sending out volunteer woodcutters, and a few days afterwards sending trucks to convey the firewood to the local railway station, whence it is carried free of charge by rail to its destination. Should a municipality not be able to provide woodcutters, it may purchase the wood at the rate of 5/- per ton.27

  • 18 Mar 1938: GOLF LINKS DISPUTE - Vendor's Action
By an order of Mr. Justice Macfarlan in the Practice Court yesterday the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Co. Ltd. regained possession of the Lakes Golf Links, Upper Beaconsfield, which it had sold to F. N. Adcock in May last year.
Dr. A. D. Ellis, who appeared for the company as plaintiff in a summons for final judgment for possession and arrears of Interest, said that Adcock agreed to pay £5,000 for the property, which consisted of a small clubhouse and a nine holes course. Adcock took possession of the links in May last year on payment of a deposit of £1,075, but when the second instalment became due it was not paid. He paid £20 or £30 toward his first payment of interest.
The real difficulty, added Dr. Ellis, was that Adcock was in possession. All the greens were in poor condition and the fairways covered with weeds. It would take hundreds of pounds to get it back into the condition in which it was when Adcock took possession. Every week it would grow worse.
When the company was pressing for payment of arrears of interest Adcock alleged that it had made the sale by misrepresentation and commenced an action against it.
Mr. J. F. Mulvany (for Adcock) said that Adcock claimed that he was induced to enter into the contract by false representations made by an officer of the company and had commenced an action under common law, claiming damages for deceit before the company took action to terminate the contract and deprive him of possession. Adcock's inability to pay was a result of the company's fraud. He urged the Court to stay the present proceedings until the action previously commenced by Adcock should be dealt with early next month.
The stay was refused and the company's application was granted.
Dr. Ellis was instructed by Messrs. Green, Dobson, and Middleton, and Mr. Mulvany by Mr. R. G. Dunlop. Frederick Noel Adcock11

  • 29 Jun 1950: LAST LAUGH
The kookaburras on the Beacon Hills Country Golf Club's course at Upper Beaconsfield are notorious for their fiendish laugh whenever players miss the green with their pitch at a popular short hole.
On Sunday last four players teed up grimly, while two laughing Jackasses sat on a bough in anticipation.
But first one ball, then another pitched true, and with four balls "sitting pretty" on the green, the fourth player exclaimed: "Laugh that off, you blighters !"
The birds were duly silent until, as the players were walking to the green, the man who had apostrophised the feathered jesters, noticed that the pocket of his bag was unfastened.
Glancing back, he discovered half a dozen white balls between him and the tee. Then the kookaburras laughed—laughed merrily, uproariously—as, retracing his steps, he recovered the balls, and put them back in the pocket !26

  • 15 Jan 1910: MAINTENANCE CASE.
Lavinia de Silveira, a young woman, of Medley street, South Yarra, charged her husband, Francis de Silveira, known as a professional pugilist, with having left her without adequate means of support.
Mr Seton Williams appeared for complainant, and Mr Nolan for defendant.
Mrs de Silveira said she had been married three years. On July 28 last year her husband left her, and went to the country. He gave her 6d before he left, and in six weeks she received only £2 from him. On New Year's Eve, in Chapel street, he pulled her hat off, caught her by the mouth, and knocked a false tooth out. He had also caught her by the hair of the head, and dragged her over the floor, and blackened her all over the body. He had torn the clothes off her back, and had threatened to cut her throat. He earns 36/- per week at the jam factory. He had given up boxing. She would not go back to him again, because of his filthy habits.
Mrs Frances Robinson, of Park Crescent, Caulfield, said Mrs de Silveira was her niece. De Silveira picked up a washing jug and threw it at his wife. Witness had seen blood flowing from Mrs de Silveira's wounds through her husband biting her. Mr and Mrs de Silveira had lived in witness's house for twelve months after they were married.
Two young women gave evidence as to having seen De Silveira assault his wife on the occasion referred to in Chapel street.
The defendant stated that he had parted good friends with his wife when he left her in July to go to New South Wales. He sent his wife £2.
She was not at home when he returned. When he went to see his wife at Caulfield Mrs Robinson said, "Get out, you black scoundrel, leaving your wife starving," and she hit him over the head with a dish cloth. (Laughter.) He was fond of his wife, and a man could not have a better wife if her aunt would leave her
alone. He denied having wilfully assaulted his wife at any time. He might have been drunk. As to the Chapel street alleged assault he had simply caught hold of his wife's hat as she was running away.
The bench made an order against de Silveira for the payment of 17/6 per week, with £2/7/- costs, defendant to find a surety of £25 forth with, in default three months' imprisonment. Lavinia Anne Smith9
  • 18 Jan 1910: NEW YEAR'S MORNING AFFRAY.
At the Prahran Court yesterday, before Mr Phipps (chairman). Major Clipperton, and Messrs M'Kinnon and Kent, J.P 's, William Styles, Frank de Silveira, otherwise known as Frank Silver, a pugilist, and Harold Croughnan were charged on summons with having behaved in an insulting manner, with intent to create a breach of the peace, and with having caused wilful damage.
Mr Lowe appeared for Styles; the other two defendants did not answer to their name and it was decided to hear the charge against Styles.
Ralph Levy, salesman of Browning-street, South Yarra, said: -After attending a party at Albert park he was walking along Chapel-street, South Yarra, in company with his brother and George Brooks at half past 5 a.m. on New Year's Day, when he met the three accused. Styles asked witness's brother what sort of tobacco he smoked, and he replied, "I have no tobacco at all, mate." Silver then struck witness on the side of the head. Witness and his friends ran home, and had to get inside to avoid stones that were being thrown by the three accused.
Clarence Levy and George Brooks also gave evidence.
The charge against Styles was reduced by striking out the words "with intent to provoke a breach of the peace," and Styles pleaded guilty. A fine of 30/ was imposed, in default seven days. The Bench ordered warrants to be issued for the arrest of Silver and Croughnan.10
  • 22 Jan 1910: NEW YEAR'S MORNING AFFRAY.
William Styles, Frank de Silveira (Otherwise known as Frank Silver, pugilist), and Harold Croughnan were charged with having behaved in an insulting manner with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and also with wilful damage.
Styles was the only defendant who appeared, and he was defended by Mr Lowe. It was decided to hear the charge against Styles.
Ralph Levy, a young man, salesman, of Browning street, South Yarra, stated that in company with his brother Clarence and another young man named George Brooks, he had been to a party at Albert Park, and they were returning home at about 5 30 a.m. on New Year's day. At this time they were in Chapel street, South Yarra, near the Rainbow Hotel, where they met the three accused. Styles said to Clarence Levy, " What sort of tobacco do you smoke ? Clarence replied, " I have no tobacco at all, mate.'' Silver then struck witness, it was alleged, on the side of the head. The two Levys and Brooks ran to Levy's house. Styles and the other two accused followed, and com menced to bombard the house with stones. A window was broken. Witness could not say whether Styles actually threw stones. The police were subsequently informed, and Constable Croft took the three accused to the watchhouse. They were identified as the assailants. Mr Lowe — Did Styles ask for tobacco in a rude sort of way?—No.
Clarence Levy, an employe of the Metropolitan Gas Company, said Styles kicked him on the chest. He saw Styles throw stones. The three defendants had apologised to his mother and father, and replaced the window.
George Brooks, laborer, residing at Elsternwick, said he received a blow from Silver.
To Mr Lowe.-I was not severely hurt, but I stopped three very unpleasant clouts.
At the suggestion of Mr Lowe, the charge against Styles was reduced by striking out the words " with intent to provoke a breach of the peace"
On behalf of Styles, Mr Lowe pleaded guilty, and said his client had never been in trouble before. He had fallen in with evil company, and regretted very much what had taken place.
A fine of 20/- wss imposed, in default seven days.
The bench ordered that warrants be issued for the arrest of Silver and Croughnan.11
  • 24 Jul 1940: HILLBRICK’S ROAD SOLUTION IN SIGHT
THE engineer reported that, in company with Cr Gardiner and Mr Heaney, engineer for Fern Tree Gully Shire, further inspection was made of the road in the Ferntree Gully Shire, leading to Hillbrick’s block on Cardinia Creek. As the existing road through Allot. 30B has now been closed, Mr Heaney suggested that the Ferntree Gully Shire might consider the construction of a new road, provided Berwick Shire would contribute towards the cost. As this is the natural outlet for ratepayers on Berwick’s side of the creek, Mr Keys recommended that the council seriously consider the suggestion.
Cr Gardiner said that Mr Heaney’s promised estimate had not yet come to hand.
Asked to give a snap estimate, Mr Keys said that the work should cost roughly about £60 or £70.
Cr Gardiner thought that as these people had gone in and made their homes in unpromising country and were making good, council ought to help them along by constructing the road.
The engineer said that by putting another 3½ chains through De Silva’s, they would be giving Manestar an outlet.
It was resolved, on the motion of Cr McBride, that Berwick Shire offer to share the cost, and that provision also be made to give Manestar an outlet. Franjo Manestar, Charles Edward Hillbrick12
  • 25 Sep 1940: You People Will Have To Fix It!
STILL another letter was received in regard to the conflicting road desires of residents on Muddy Creek, at Upper Beaconsfield. Advancing the claims of the old road between his place and De Silva’s, Mr F. Manestar claimed that it wouldn’t cost much to put a bridge over Cardinia Creek. If council would put the road down that way he volunteered to help for a month with two horses. “Where Mr Edebohls wants it put is useless,” he wrote, “as it will cost a lot of money and there is a swampy flat of 4 chains to go through over Muddy Creek. This is covered by water every winter.”
“You people will have to fix a road up for me,” wound up the writer,” —“otherwise I'll have to see into it, as I am stranded.”
Crs McBride and Ure moved that the letter be received.
“We can’t do anything until that road is fixed up,” reported the engineer.

  • 21 May 1941: NEW PROPOSAL TO GIVE OUTLET TO ISOLATED SETTLERS
FOLLOWING a report by Crs Gardiner and Whiteside regarding the problem of providing an outlet for four settlers hemmed in down on the Cardinia Creek, Crs Whiteside and McBride moved that the engineer survey the necessary connecting road through the properties of Messrs De Silva, Manestar and Glismann, and report to the council on the steps necessary to acquire same.
Later, in connection with the same matter, Crs McBride and Ure moved that a grant of £100 be solicited from the C.R.B. to help acquire, clear and form a road to supply an outlet for Messrs Edebohls, Manestar, Hillbrick and De Silva. Franjo Manestar14
