  • 24 Aug 1921: ALD. DAVEY MARRIES
Alderman T. J. Davey was married very quietly at Christ Church, South Yarra, on Friday, to Miss Beatrice Smith, of St. Kilda. They are now spending their honeymoon at Queenscliff. The bridegroom is about 76 years of ago. This is his third marriage. Alderman Davey has known Miss Smith and her mother for many years, but the engagement preceding the marriage was of very brief duration. Beatrice Amelia Sophia Smith13
  • 1 Jan 1927: MR. T. J. DAVEY. DEATH OF FORMER LORD MAYOR. "Father" of the City Council.
Flags were flown half-mast yesterday at the Town Hall and at several city buildings to show respect to the memory of Mr. Thomas James Davey, a former Lord Mayor of Melbourne, whose death occurred early yesterday morning at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. L. A. Gollin, at Sorrento, where he was spending the Christmas holidays. Before his retirement from the position of alderman in November, 1925, Mr. Davey was one of the most picturesque figures in the City Council, of which he was affectionately known as the "father." He was 82 years of age at the time of his death, and his birthday on December 1 was remembered by members of the council, many of whom visited him on the anniversary at his home in Cliveden Mansions.
Mr. Davey was born in Bristol, England, in 1844 and was educated at the Fairland Lodge School in that city. He came to Victoria in 1857, arriving on his birthday. His earliest business venture was as storekeeper at Sale, after station experience at Lindenow. Four years later he returned to Melbourne, and gave his attention to mining and commercial matters. In 1872 he established the business of incorporated accountant and was subsequently joined in that business by Mr. T. Cole and Mr E. H. [sic Joseph Henry] Flack. His firm with offices in Queen street became Davey, Flack and Company. After the dissolution of that firm in 1899 [sic 1905] he formed with Mr. E. G. Balding the film of Davey, Balding and Company, public accountants, Queen street, and he remained a member of that firm until his death.
In 1891 Mr. Davey was elected a councillor for the Lonsdale Ward of the City of Melbourne, and in June 1918 on the death of the late Sir Arthur Snowden he was elected alderman. He resigned from the position of alderman in November, 1925, on account of ill-health: his successor was Alderman G. H. C. Crespin. Mr. Davey' s work on behalf of the City of Melbourne generally and the Lonsdale Ward particularly was of great value, and his retirement from the council was deeply regretted by all his associates. During the absence in England of the late Sir Henry Weedon in 1907 [sic 1908] he became Acting Lord Mayor of Melbourne and he was elected Lord Mayor for the years 1910- 11 and 1911-12, in succession to the late Councillor James Burston. He was instrumental while a member of the council in founding the electric supply department of the corporation, by far the most successful and profitable of many corporation enterprises.
His wide knowledge of finance and figures was of service to the corporation in many directions and for a long period he was a member of the finance electric supply, general purposes, and hackney carriage committees.
Mr. Davey was director of several important companies. He was chairman of directors of London Stores Limited and director of J. Kitchen and Sons Limited and the Queensland Insurance Company, Mr. F. S. Meyers managing director of the London Stores said yesterday that the most profound regret was felt by the board of management of the London Stores Ltd. at the death of Mr. T. J. Davey who had been chairman of directors since the formation of the company in 1911. He was a former chairman of the Fire Brigades Board, and for 13 years he had been one of the Exhibition trustees. With Mr. T. Brentnall and 30 other accountants he founded the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of Victoria, now the Commonwealth Institute of Accountants. Of those foundation members, Mr Brentnall is now the sole survivor. Mr Davey was a justice of the peace for Victoria and for New South Wales and a member of the Honorary Justices' Association. He took a keen and active interest in charitable institutions and was president of the Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, one of the wards of which was named in his honour. He was a member of the Athenaeum Club, the Victoria Racing Club, and the Melbourne Cricket Club. A keen sportsman he was particularly interested in rowing, and was a patron and member of the Mercantile Rowing Club. He was also a member of the Royal Society of St. George.
Mr. Davey was three times married. His first wife was Miss Davis, [sic Mary Ann Pearce] of Hobart. His second wife was Miss Edith Westley, daughter of the late Mr. J. Westley and sister of Councillor A C. Westley. His third wife, formerly Miss Beatrice Smith, whom he married in 1921, survives him.
By his first marriage he had four children, three of whom survive. They are Mr. H. P. [Henry Pearce (Harry)] Davey, Mrs. L A [Louis Alkin (Mary Winnifred Greaves)] Gollin, and Mrs. C. F. [sic Charles Horatio (Clara Olive)] Beauchamp, all of Melbourne.
He leaves six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Members of the City Council will assemble this morning at 10 oclock at the Town Hall to attend the funeral which will leave the mortuary of W. G. Apps and Sons Pty., Ltd., High sheet St Kilda, for the St Kilda Cemetery.14

  • 25 Jun 1892: DUGDALE V. DUGDALE. This was a petition by Jane Dugdale for a divorce from William Dugdale, on the ground of desertion. Mr Woolf appeared for the petitioner, instructed by Mr A. R. Daly. The suit was undefended. The marriage took place on 7th October, 1875, and after the parties had lived at various places in New Zealand, the respondent left the petitioner during their residence at Invercargill. The petitioner came to Victoria and lived with her husband at Benalla in 1878, but not for long, and at his suggestion the wife left her husband, and came to live with her parents. The petitioner heard nothing of her husband until she found that he was engaged to play an organ at a church gathering at Albury. She wrote to the respondent, and he replied, telling, her to meet him at the Rose Hotel, Albury. She was ill at the time, and when she wrote to the hotel to find whether her husband was still at the place, she heard that he had left and had since been unable to find his whereabouts.
His Honor granted the application with costs.12
