Note*19 Apr 1893 Todea Africana writes: Leaving this place on our right, I should be sorry to act as guide to any confiding new chum. However, we are in a happy state of perfect trustfulness of our appointed leader, and after many ups and downs through the big gum trees and across numerous creeks we arrive at a cottage, newly built near the bottom of a big fern gully. We are told that the proprietor is a Mr. Goetz, a German gentleman who intends this neat little structure for his man, proposing to build his own house on the summit of the adjoining hill, where he is having several acres cleared by the unholy aid of the forest devil, who, we are relieved to hear, is under the complete control of the muscular Christians who have taken the contract. At this point, as it is beginning to rain, we are glad to get our luncheon bags unpacked under the friendly shelter of the verandah, and whilst discussing the cold "collar" and the succulent German sausage moistened by the benign aid of McCracken succour, the spiritual man with tales of adventure by flood and field. Now it is how our veteran leader, who seems to us to possess the unerring instinct of the black tracker in picking up a trail, was himself in his new chum days lost in the bush in New South Wales, and with his party had well nigh died of thirst. Though, even then, his Heaven born gift of finding the "way out" rescued himself and the other chums of the party from a miserable death. As it was, they were glad to scoop a hole in the mud at the bottom of a one-time water-hole and utilise the fluid (if by compliment it might so be called) for making tea.—Then it is an anecdote of the Franco-Prussian war of sixty-six; with reminiscences of Heidelberg and the Neckar and the dear old German Rhine. But time flies all too fast and we must again be moving, so once more we mount our none too fiery steeds (though to give them credit they rival the goat in sure footedness), and on we go. I am glad to learn that even in these bad times, settlement is progressing in the surrounding country. Hereabouts there is quite a little German colony springing up; no less than seven families having made, or being about to make homes within an easy radius of this spot.5

  • 9 Nov 1904: Berwick Police Court ; TUESDAY October 26. Before Mr Cresswell, PM., and F. G.Hartley, J.P. - M. L. Trickey v. W. G. Goetz for assault. Mr. Candy for plaintiff, Mr. Ireland for defendant.
    Mrs. Trickey stated.—My daughter went to defendant's place with a letter and was spoken to roughly by Goetz. Went to defendant's place and asked him why he had insulted my daughter? He told me to go off, and hit me on the side of the head ; he tried to ... me in the stomach, which I prevented with my hand, which was bruised.
    To Mr. Ireland.—I am housekeeper to Mr Hooper. He is a married man not living with his wife ; I am a married woman not living with my husband.
    Lennie Trickey stated.—I was sent to Mr. Goetz with a letter from Mr. Hooper. Goetz told me Hooper was a fool, and looked about to get a ... I did not put my fingers to my nose at Goetz. I am not in the habit of doing so.
    Molly M'Hugh deposed.—I went with Lennie Trickey to Goetz's place with the letter. He was in his garden. Lennie gave him the letter, and asked if there was an answer. He told her to tell Hooper "to do what he liked—he was a confounded fool." We went to go when Goetz ran after us and ordered us off. Lennie picked her dog up and we ran away.
    To Mr. Ireland.—I went with Lennie for company. I did not know the contents of the letter except it was something about a drain.
    Albert Watts stated.—On the day in question I was chopping wood .. hill, when a noise about three chains away attracted my attention. I Iooked and saw Goetz rush at Mrs. Trickey and kick her. She put her hand d.. Goetz then put his arm round her ... she tried to get away. There were a few fruit trees between me and the parties. I was then in Hooper's employ. I subsequently saw defendant's daughters, and told them that I would give evidence in the case. They ... not tell me that I could not see for ... fruit trees.
    To Mr. Ireland.—When I first ... Mrs. Trickey she was outside Goetz's gate, but on his land.
    Wm Goetz stated.—I am a farmer and engineer. For years had been good friends with Hooper; knew his wife ; and also knew that Mrs. Trickey was living at his place. Told him I did not want her at my place. The girl gave me the letter and went ... about half a chain. I read it and remarked that Hooper was a fool. She laughed at me, and I threatened to pull her ear if she did not go away. Afterwards Mrs. Trickey came up and stood at my gate. I said, "Please madam, go away." She called me offensive names, and I again ordered her to go. I pushed her off at the gate, but she pulled up her sleeves and said "come on !" I said no; she then made offensive gestures, and I said " Go home, you rubbish." Mr. Hooper was a good friend to me ; I had nothing against him. My daughter Kate was present.
    Kate Goetz said.—I know Mrs. Trickey; had no conversation with her about her daughter coming on my (witness) father's land. Was in the garden when the two girls brought the letter to my father, and asked if there was an answer. He replied that there was, and to tell Hooper that he could not alter the run of the water as it was in its natural course. He called her a larrikiness, and told her not to come there any more. He said Hooper was a confounded fool. The girls started laughing and shouted " Hurrah !" he told Lennie Trickey that he would pull her ear if he caught her, on which both girls ran away. Lennie Trickey put her fingers to her nose. I do not think Lennie Trickey is a quiet girl.
    To Mr. Ireland.—My sister Bertha was near when Mrs. Trickey came round. Bertha said, " Oh, dada, don't ... when Mrs. Trickey raised her arm and father caught hold of it and pulled her round. During the row Mrs. Trickey said father got hundreds of pounds from Hooper. She said that she came to see him because he threatened her daughter. Father said "'There's the road, madam, go." She came towards him and raised her hand. He caught her arm and shewed her down the hill. She tucked up her sleeves and said "Come on." He replied, "Your class of women are never afraid. I don't fight women." She put her fingers on her nose. Father again told her to " Go." She replied," you little wretch when I catch you I'll kill you. The disturbance lasted half an hour. Mrs Trickey could have gone away any time.

  • 27 Dec 1904: EMERALD, Monday.—With the extreme heat of Friday, bush fires broke out all over the heavily-timbered country lying between Ferntree Gully and Gembrook and including the Upper Beaconsfield districts and those north of Narre Warren. On Friday evening the wind dropped and the residents had a well earned rest but Saturday brought the fires on with greater intensity. ... Mr Goetz of Emerald lost most of his outbuildings.20

    From W. G. Goetz, Emerald, asking for an outlet, as Mr. Care, over whose place he travelled to and from his place, contemplated fencing, which would block him.-Cr. Martin thought a deviation would be necessary, and moved that Mr. Care be asked to allow the road to be kept open for a short period, and that Mr Ramage inspect and select a site for the road.-Seconded by Cr.     Mrs. Trickey stated.—My daughter went to defendant's place with a letter and was spoken to roughly by Goetz. Went to defendant's place and asked him why he had insulted my daughter? He told me to go off, and hit me on the side of the head ; he tried to ... me in the stomach, which I prevented with my hand, which was bruised.
    To Mr. Ireland.—I am housekeeper to Mr Hooper. He is a married man not living with his wife ; I am a married woman not living with my husband.
    Lennie Trickey stated.—I was sent to Mr. Goetz with a letter from Mr. Hooper. Goetz told me Hooper was a fool, and looked about to get a ... I did not put my fingers to my nose at Goetz. I am not in the habit of doing so.
    Molly M'Hugh deposed.—I went with Lennie Trickey to Goetz's place with the letter. He was in his garden. Lennie gave him the letter, and asked if there was an answer. He told her to tell Hooper "to do what he liked—he was a confounded fool." We went to go when Goetz ran after us and ordered us off. Lennie picked her dog up and we ran away.
    To Mr. Ireland.—I went with Lennie for company. I did not know the contents of the letter except it was something about a drain.
    Albert Watts stated.—On the day in question I was chopping wood .. hill, when a noise about three chains away attracted my attention. I Iooked and saw Goetz rush at Mrs. Trickey and kick her. She put her hand d.. Goetz then put his arm round her ... she tried to get away. There were a few fruit trees between me and the parties. I was then in Hooper's employ. I subsequently saw defendant's daughters, and told them that I would give evidence in the case. They ... not tell me that I could not see for ... fruit trees.
    To Mr. Ireland.—When I first ... Mrs. Trickey she was outside Goetz's gate, but on his land.
    Wm Goetz stated.—I am a farmer and engineer. For years had been good friends with Hooper; knew his wife ; and also knew that Mrs. Trickey was living at his place. Told him I did not want her at my place. The girl gave me the letter and went ... about half a chain. I read it and remarked that Hooper was a fool. She laughed at me, and I threatened to pull her ear if she did not go away. Afterwards Mrs. Trickey came up and stood at my gate. I said, "Please madam, go away." She called me offensive names, and I again ordered her to go. I pushed her off at the gate, but she pulled up her sleeves and said "come on !" I said no; she then made offensive gestures, and I said " Go home, you rubbish." Mr. Hooper was a good friend to me ; I had nothing against him. My daughter Kate was present.
    Kate Goetz said.—I know Mrs. Trickey; had no conversation with her about her daughter coming on my (witness) father's land. Was in the garden when the two girls brought the letter to my father, and asked if there was an answer. He replied that there was, and to tell Hooper that he could not alter the run of the water as it was in its natural course. He called her a larrikiness, and told her not to come there any more. He said Hooper was a confounded fool. The girls started laughing and shouted " Hurrah !" he told Lennie Trickey that he would pull her ear if he caught her, on which both girls ran away. Lennie Trickey put her fingers to her nose. I do not think Lennie Trickey is a quiet girl.
    To Mr. Ireland.—My sister Bertha was near when Mrs. Trickey came round. Bertha said, " Oh, dada, don't ... when Mrs. Trickey raised her arm and father caught hold of it and pulled her round. During the row Mrs. Trickey said father got hundreds of pounds from Hooper. She said that she came to see him because he threatened her daughter. Father said "'There's the road, madam, go." She came towards him and raised her hand. He caught her arm and shewed her down the hill. She tucked up her sleeves and said "Come on." He replied, "Your class of women are never afraid. I don't fight women." She put her fingers on her nose. Father again told her to " Go." She replied," you little wretch when I catch you I'll kill you. The disturbance lasted half an hour. Mrs Trickey could have gone away any time.
