  • 31 Aug 1867: BLACKWOOD, (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) IT is our painful duty to record the demise of one of the oldest inhabitants of this place. Mr. Joseph Hudson breathed his last on Tuesday morning, after a long illness, aneurism of the heart being the direct cause of death. The deceased gentleman was a hotelkeeper at Barry's Reef for some years, and was very much respected. Nearly two hundred persons followed his remains to the place of interment, including several members of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows, of which order the deceased was a honorary member. The Church of England burial service was impressively read by the Rev. M. A. Ashe, after which Mr. Magnus read the Oddfellows' burial service, the members of the brotherhood consigning their little sprigs of rosemary into the grave, in compliance with the requirements of the order.8

  • 27 Feb 1869: Jane Hudson, of Barry's Reef, and W. S. Smith, of the Junction, were each fined £5, and £2 2s. costs, for selling spirits without a license. The cases were proved by the two informers who appeared at the Ballan Police Court—Alexander Henderson, of Church-street, Richmond, and J. Sainsbury, of St. Kilda—who have been employed for the especial purpose, at the instigation of the Shire Council.6
  • 28 Feb 1874: WEDNESDAY, FEB. 25. FITZGERALD V. ELLIOTT.
Special case stated by the warden at Blackwood for the opinion of the Court. Mr. Holroyd for plaintiff; no appearance for defendant.
This was a complaint by Mr. Fitzgerald against Jane Elliott and John Elliott, as executrix and executor of August Hausmann, to obtain a declaration that they had forfeited all their right to a residence area. No. 191, Barry's Reef, Blackwood. In 1868, a Mr. Hudson and his wife were in possession of Crown lands at Blackwood, on which was erected an hotel. He died, leaving a widow, who, in August, 1869, married August Hausmann. Hausmann was registered as the owner of the land under a residence area license. In January, 1870, he, by way of lien, transferred his interest in the land to Fitzgerald, to secure payment of a sum of £164 10s., before June, 1871. In June, 1870, Hausmann died, and his widow married John Elliott. None of the money advanced to Hausmann had been repaid. Hausmann made no will, and Mr. and Mrs. Elliott were sued as executrix and executor de son tort. They refused to give up possession of the land to Fitzgerald. The warden was about to make an order in favour of the plaintiffs, but at the request of defendant's attorney he reserved certain questions for the opinion of the Court. "1. Had he jurisdiction under the Mining Statute and the bye-laws of the Ballarat Mining Board, to hear and adjudicate upon a complaint for forfeiture of a residence area for non-payment of a lien?" His Honour thought he had jurisdiction, although the complainant might make a suit of redemption on payment of the amount of the lien. "2. Could the present proceedings be brought under section 101, subsection 3, or section 177 of the Mining Statute ?" His Honour said that the proceedings must be brought under both sections. If that were done, the complaint could be upheld. "3. Could the defendants be sued jointly as executor and executrix de son tort ?" His Honour said as they were both in possession of the ground, both could be sued; and the Married Women's Property Statute did not affect the case. He further held that the plaintiff could recover possession of the ground, and that the order should be drawn up, directing John Elliott to give up possession, and directing Mrs. Elliott not to withhold possession.
The Court then adjourned sine die.7

  • 14 Dec 1935: WEDDING. THAME—SEYMOUR
Last Monday evening St Barnabas' Church of England was the scene of the wedding of Alillian Francis (Lila), only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Seymour, of Henty, and Sidney Arthur, youngest son of Mrs. E. Thame and the late Mr. R. Thame, of Henty. The church was decorated by friends of the bride, and the Rev. A. B. Prentice performed the ceremony. Bobbie Mathieson, cushion bearer, who preceded the bride into the church, was dressed in white satin. The bride entered the church on the arm of her father and was gowned in shimmering bridal satin, cut on classical lines with a rucked hbdice in front and swaths of orange blossom and diamente, while the sleeves were wide fitting and tightly tucked at the wrist. Small satin buttons oramented the back from neck to waist. The skirt, which was cut on the cross, fell straight to the ground and had a shirred panel let into the back, extending into a long empress train. Her veil was of billowing tulle, held in place by a coronet of orange blossoms set far back on the head, and covered the long train. It was worn over her face when the bride entered the church, and thrown back after the ceremony. She carried a bouquet of orchids, surrounded by gerberas, azaleas and blue delphiniums tied with white satin ribbon, and also carried a white prayer book, the gift of the Rev. and Mrs. Prentice. The trainbearer was Yvonne Crain (cousin of the bride), who wore an ankle-length frock of pale yellow tulle over a taffeta slip to tone. She carried a posy of blue delphiniums, sweat peas and maidenhair fern. The three bridesmaids, Misses Beryl Tates, Cloudsley Low and Maisie Jackson, were dressed in sunset shades of tulle and taffeta, their trained skirts trimmed with frills of tulle. The bodices were of swathed taffeta with soft folds of tulle round the shoulders, caught with diamente trimmings. Their headdress was of tulle and velvet leaves forming a halo, and they carried bouquets of gladioli, gerberas, sweet peas and azaleas in matching tones. Mr. George Thame (brother of bridegroom) was best man, and Messrs Max Breen and R. L. Watson groomsmen. Mrs. A.B. Prentice presided at the organ and during the signing of the register Mrs. J. S. Wild sang "I Come to You." The reception was held in the School of Arts, where about 100 guests partook of the breakfast. Mrs Seymour and Mrs. Thame received the guests, the former being gowned in navy crepe flamisol with white trimnings, full sleeves and cape, and wearing large navy picture hat to match. She carried a bouquet of red gladioli. Mrs. Thame wore oyster-grey angel-skin lace with large kimino sleeves, bodice shirred in front and relieved with cape to tone, the skirt falling into a small train. She wore a shoulder spray of orchids. The Rev. Prentice presided and the usual toasts were honored. A feature of the decorated tables was the threedecker wedding cake. The bride's gift to the bridegroom was a complete smoker's outfit, while the bridegroom's gift to the bride was a fur coat of natural squirrel; to the bridesmaids, handbags and crystal ware; and to the train bearer and cushion bearer, gold chain bangle and gold initialed sleeve links. When leaving for the honeymoon, which is to be a motor tour, the bride, traveled in a frock of mustard marocain with long pointed cape trimmed with navy blue, and hat and shoes to tone. Messrs B. C. Selk and C. Jack son jr were the ushers both at the church and the breakfast. At the conclusion of the breakfast the younger friends of the bride and bridegroom gathered at the hall and held a dance until the small hours of the morning. Many were the presents, which comprised crystal ware, silver and numerous cheques. The future home of the young couple will be Caragabul. Sidney Arthur Thame4
